an east bay creek. the boys told friends they were rafting in walnut creek. >> this is cost? >> it is not. >> reporter: after apartments reported -- after parent reported the two teens missing, the searchers found the raft deflated. the body of one of the teens, matthew miller, was found in the creek. two hours later, the body of 17- year-old gavin powell was also found. >> it's a flood zone, we had the recent rains. it makes the river, we will not -- well not the river but the creek actually swell. the debris that's in the water, branches, rocks, other debris causes causes and obvious.

>> reporter: the wall nut creek channel figured into another tragedy a year ago. both powell and miller was students. the principal met with some teachers today to discuss how to handle the tragedy when the students return. they told friends they were going rafting in a nearby creek. about 4:00 in the afternoon, they called a friend to meet them at a location. when they didn't show up, he assumed they had been picked up. at midnight, the families reported the boys missing. although the sheriff's department learned the boys were missing overnight, the

waters were too fast to risk putting search crews in the channel in the dark. about 85 volunteers were looking for the boys before the deflated raft was found. well, the search for a missing snow boarder has also ended tragically. he was almost complete labored in snow. the 23-year-old disappeared thursday after telling his family he was going for one more run. there were avalanche conditions where his body was found. scary moments for some passengers on a delta flight this morning. one of the plane's two engines failed over florida forcing it to make an emergency landing. the pilot landed safely but not before pieces of the engine broke off and landed on a

freeway. there was a loud explosion. passengers on the plane said they couldn't believe what was happening. >> there was an explosion, a flash. i was very close to the wing i was on the other side. the guy that was across the aisle from me, he dove. he hit the dirt. we all were very nervous. >> reporter: the pilot had trouble stopping the plane and the brakes melted. the passengers were based on new flights. a fraternity is the scene of an armed robbery. one suspect got away, another is behind bars. the suspects may have been upset after being kicked out of a party. >> reporter: two men showed up here at a fraternity on u nc davis. >> that's when police say the

suspects robbed four people, two of them students. >> they went back into the house, were able to get a set of car keys. >> okay. took off in the stolen car but didn't get very far. officers say the suspect's car crashed right here. you can see the damage. the suspect then got out of the car, through the loaded gun -- threw the loaded gun and then took off. officers set up a perimeter but were not able to locate him. the passenger was arrested and booked. both suspects are believed to be bang gang members. what is scary about this whole situation is what could have happened in the loaded -- if the loaded gun had not been found before kids arrived. >> we were very fortunate to locate that firearm. >> reporter: uc davis student is a member of another fra at any time.

>> there are so many guys living here, you would assume safety in neighbors. that's just unheard of. moderate quake in california. the magnitude 5.0 quake was around 11:30 this morning. tremors were found in san diego. there were no reports of damage or injury, a week ago, a magnitude 4.1 shook the same area. there were several aftershocks. a yacht with four americans on board that was hijacked by somali pirates is being shadowed by a war ship that is moving closer to the coast. it was hijacked on friday. january and scott adam have been sailing the yacht around the world since 2004. another american couple was also aboard. the quest is headed to a pirate

gathering outside wisconsin's state house. but inside, demonstrators were at it again. the crowd cheering as wisconsin firefighters paraded through to show their support. this state employee who didn't want to give her name is one of many who worked all week, then spent their weekend protesting the governor's plan to strip away collective bargaining for state workers. >> scott walker is manufacturing a crisis to strip away our union rights. >> for us, this is about balancing the budget. we've -- we are broke just like nearly every other state across the country. >> reporter: they believe the proposals are only about union busting and have little to do with real reform. >> the real motivation is a desperate need for power on -- that some individuals feel they need. >> reporter: the republican may vote on the budget bill on

clearing out around our skies tonight. nice place to be right now. you can see already some clouds moving in from the far north. that's part of the next system that's looking to pay a visit as early as tomorrow. for the most part, it's just going to bring us some clouds. we're looking at mostly cloudy skies around the bay area, still some cool temperatures, there's some slight chance of some showers. that's about it. we are going to stay most my dry from this one. 40 degrees right now in santa rosa. 41 in napa, 41 in fairfield. chilly night ahead across the bay area. by day, you're still looking at showers across part of northern california. in towards the central valley, clouds, temperatures into the 50s here. if you want to enjoy that fresh powder, looks like a great day to get up there and do it, there's just a slight chance of a couple of snowshowers up there. temperatures at the freezing mark at 32. so looks like we're catching a break from the stormy weather.

watch this guy, another cold storm that looks like it's almost going to drop directly due south. for the most part, that should keep it off the coastline. for now, we're looking at a cold night here in the bay area with the skies mostly clear. tomorrow we will watch those clouds rolling on by. look at the computer model. as we head through the day, you will notice a couple of those showers flirting with the coastline here. the main burn of the energy stays right off the the coast right there and looks like it's going to slide on by. a near miss as the storm system moves on through. probably about 32 degrees. 32 degrees in santa rosa, in and around the bay, probably some 30s and some frost. we may even see some black ice, watch out for that. by the afternoon tomorrow, numbers below the average this time of year.

really, we're still catching a break from most of the stormy weather. as we head in towards tuesday, ski conditions improve a little, more sunshine, then wednesday, becoming mostly sunny skies in the bay area, but that the not become to last long, there's an even colder storm, if you can believe that, beginning to make its way in towards our skies, bringing some showers probably late in the day. by friday, that cold air mass, this is originating over the the artic, it's not going over the ocean waters, the air is going to be very, very cold into friday and friday night into saturday night. we are looking at some very, very low snow levels, the possibility if you were to believe these computer models, down to sea level. right now, that's a possibility. >> wow! nothing like we're about to see. check out this video. i have to cough excuse me. >> go right a head. the midwest is getting slammed by another blast of

state officials visited several predominately the importance about college. san francisco state officials visited several african- american churches in the area today. the message was simple. american world ♪[ music ] >> reporter: this morning, at providence baptist church, a new message. >> we can make it possible for them to get an education. >> reporter: the president of san francisco state came to recruit new african-american students. this mother of four doesn't need convincing. >> it will open doors so they can do the things they like to do rather than doing the things they have to do. >> reporter: the president also talked about the san francisco promise. it's an agreement between the university and the city of san

francisco that says if you go to a high school here and get good enough grades, you are guaranteed admission to san francisco state. >> we can guarantee that any student who has a financial problem will be able to go to san francisco state. >> reporter: but last year the university turns down up to 40,000 qualified students. >> we didn't have the room for them. we didn't have the money to teach them. this is a tragedy. >> reporter: then why are we encouraging more people to come. >> we're trying to get better people. >> reporter: hization a lot of -- he says a lot of current students are taking too long and dropping out. >> it's harder for people to get classes they need. >> reporter: the school would like more federal money and the grants chances increase with the minority population. >> encouraging anybody to go to college, period. it's a good thing. >> reporter: our communities
