you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news. >> it's been raining and raining and raining. so what about our reservoirs, a look at where they stand for our summer supply. getting back and to boat -- getting back to boating and business. a miracle more than a week after the 9.0 earthquake in japan. a woman and her teenaged grandson. how they survived all this time. the disaster 5,000 miles away but it's impact is being felt in the united states. good evening. a battered bay area still recovering from the weekend's stormy weather. many of us woke to down trees and debris everywhere from the strong winds overnight. we did get a break today, more rain is on the way, though.

with all the runoff, does that mean we know longer have to conserve water. full reservoirs don't mean an end of water rationing. >> reporter: reservoirs around the bay area were high even before the latest storms. back in january, marin water district pulled the plug on alpine dam to make room for more water. >> you can hear the water sucking from the lake and actually going down to the spill way and it's so loud and so raging, like i said, the ground shakes beneath you. >> reporter: santa clara valley water district says its reservoirs and wells are in good shape. snowfall totals in the sierra and -- the snow is good and wet. the latest survey shows water content at 158% of average.

good news for farmers and others who rely on snow melt. snow melt will also fill san francisco's reservoir in the sierra. what could go wrong now? you ever heard of a regulatory drought. >> it has to do with regulations and environmental conditions, those kinds of things. >> reporter: marty grimes says the district gets a significant share of its water from federal and state water projects that take it from the delta. the district is concerned that the efforts to stop filling fish in the pumps could result in stopping the pumps. >> thank you very much. well, the rain isn't over yet. i want fact, there is a big -- in fact, there ig -- is a big

storm coming later in the week. just a few scattered showers in the bay area. several more offshore. today is the first day of spring and it sure came in like a lion, a blustery storm, power outages all over the bay area. let's look at some of the damage. >> you want to salute the death of a 150-year-old oak tree. >> it ripped out a gas line that serviced the house. >> luckily it didn't fall on the house. >> reporter: in san fra,s it was a man -- in san francisco, it was a man made wonder that took a fall. it landed near union square. >> i heard a big crash, went to the window and everybody was like running away across the way and hollering. >> reporter: luckily no one was hurt. also, a tree fell on to a car at lincoln avenue just after midnight with the ground

saturated, we could be seeing a locality more tree damage -- a lot more tree damage. >> it's bad because it hasn't slowed down and i would expect to see a low the of -- a lot of trees falling in the next couple of days here. >> reporter: hopefully not to the level that caused this flooding. or the power outages caused by falling trees. today thousands of people were without power. >> we are used to it here. >> this fallen tree isn't just an inconvenience for this household. this roadway is now blocked and it's one of the only ways in and out of this neighborhood. >> we are okay. >> everyone is okay. >> reporter: better in comparison to the old oak tree. >> just going to have to live with it and the house is going to look different without it.

it's very sad. the bad weather need it difficult for fishermen and boaters. how locals are dealing with damage left by the tsunami. >> reporter: fishermen and sailors are back in business but the damage from the tsunami surge is still being felt. frank figures he lost up to $10,000 this past week the harbor was closed. and weather today still stopped him from going out. >> i think the weather is not too good to go fishing any way. >> reporter: he said that the tsunami surge reached heights of 15 feet when waves tossed over the docks. a number of docks suffered major damage. >> i'm trying to figure out how

many shims i need. >> reporter: he figures it will take him a long time to repair the damage on his boat. >> i mean, she took a beating for eight, nine hours. she was sitting fine at 6:00 p.m. but overnight with the slow leak, she sank and got caught under the deck and under the dock. when she went under the dock, the windows got bashed in and strangely the wood piece that my fender was tied to got smashenned and jammed into the window. >> he says his boat suffered a bent rudder. he spend six hours clearing out buckets of mud. there is talk the -- contributed to the estimated $26 million in damages. they admit the design is less than ideal the channel nears off to an angle and the force

of the tsunami mag -- magnified it. many believe it's hard to prepare for something like that. >> mother nature always wins no matter what you do. sooner or later it will catch up with you. >> reporter: here in the north harbor was where the tsunami wiped out all of the docks. they will be seeking state funding to help prepare the damage and bring back some of the slips. well, all classes are cancelled tomorrow at -- college. the power has been out since thursday. pg&e is trying to figure out the cause. an amazing story coming out of japan tonight. an 80-year-old woman and her grandson were rescued nine days after the earthquake. meanwhile, there is more evidence of radiation

contamination in foot supplies. -- food supplies. newly released estimates say at least 18,000 people have died in the quake and tsunami. from cars to gadgets such as the ipad, consumer products that are imported to japan took a big, big hit because of the earthquake and tsunami. how is that affecting the u.s. economy? >> reporter: it's an economic jolt. they are out of a job indefinitely. the quake has halted supplies. >> it's not a good thing. it ripples through the economy. >> most of japan's car factories were not directly damaged disaster but honda, mazda, mitsubishi and toyota have had to stop production

rolling blackouts are making power unreliable. much of the country is in no condition to get parts moving again soon. >> the real issues are like power, lack of transportation to get people up there. >> reporter: a truck driver delivers japanese cars from the port. images like these have him worried. >> after seeing what happened on the tv and actually seeing the cars that i deliver get ruined and talking with the people at the port, they are talking two to three months we wouldn't have anything to deliver. >> reporter: apple's ipad 2 is already sold out and japan's shortage may make it even tougher to get one. >> we don't expect to see prices go up in electronics. i want think the first thing consumer are likely to see are holes on the shelf. >> consumers say they can wait. >> if we have to wait for a

more attacks on libya tonight. and a government spokesperson dafi's compound allied forces have launched more attacks on libya tonight. a government spokesperson says qadaffi's compound was hit. a libyan government spokesman says these are part of a rocket that hit qadaffi's come pound sunday night -- compound sunday night. >> we cannot have this. americans attack -- [ audio difficulty ] -- in 1986 when they tried -- they killed his daughter. >> reporter: the spokesman says the administrative building is near qadaffi's tent where he receives guests. the penitentiary began and -- pentagon and officials say gat

gad is not a target -- say qadaffi is not a target. >> if we start adding additional objectives then we create a problem. >> over tripoli, streaks of antiaircraft fire lit up the sky for a second night in a row. two days of allied attacks are a success. >> we judge these strikes to have been very effective. >> reporter: just three days after the united nations author eyed a new fly zone -- authorized a no-fly zone, they say it's effectively in place. libya says it will abide by an immediate cease fire but the u.s. isn't buying it. >> i question anything out of -- that qadaffi called for. he called for a cease fire and then told his trips to move again. >> reporter: military officials say there is no evidence of

civilian casualties despite libya's claims of dozens of deaths. safety experts are now recommending new guidelines for children's car seats. they say children should ride in rear-facing char seats until age 2 instead of age 1. and older children who have out grown them should ride in booster seats until adult seat belts fit them properly. gas prices still going up. the price for a gallon of regular has jumped 7 cents in just the past two weeks. the national average is now 3.5 $7. here in the bay area it is much higher. you are paying -- oakland, it's 3.98 and also in san jose. the barry bonds personalry trial begins -- perjury trial begins tomorrow morning. in 2003, he told the grand jury he never knowingly used

steroids. defense lawyers and prosecutors will begin jury selection tomorrow morning. it's likely they will present opening statements and first witnesses by tuesday. the former giants out fielder set major league's record of 762 home runs. also tomorrow, the santa clara city council will vote on whether to stash money for a new football stadium for the 49ers. right now, there is a $4.5 million pot in the hands of a newly formed stadium authority. officials are concerned that the state might still be able to grab it. they may vote to give the money directly to the 49ers. if the stadium plans falls through the city would get the money back. you may have noticed the first day of spring felt like winter still. get ready for a wet week.

>> reporter: well, it turned out to be an interesting day around the bay area today. we had some showers, thunderstorms and sunshine showing up between. an area of low pressure begins to spin off the coastline. showers continuing tonight and probably right into tomorrow as well before we get ready for the next storm systems that are headed our way. in the meantime, though, we saw significant rainfall. over an inch in san rafael. almost an inch in san jose. you get the idea. we've had over 33 inches of rain so far in santa row sa. rolls, 115% in oakland. if you do plan on traveling around the state, we are still looking at some showers around. of the state for tomorrow. the possibility of some isolated thunderstorms -- get a little lifting from the sunshine and the clouds.

before you know it you can see some thunderstorms popping up there. lots of snow in the high country and we've got a series of storms headed there. they are strong storms headed for the sierra. you're going to be measuring in feet not inches before this week is done. pretty impressive storm system. this area of low pressure on the back side of it. it's dropping down right here. it will bring with it more moisture. we're keeping the showers for tonight with the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm. so you get the idea. thanks staying unsettled. nothing organized just yet. that will change as we head into tuesday. showers continuing, making that i way into the santa cruz mountains. through the night tonight, more scattered showers on and off throughout the night. a possibility of some thunderstorms, not a washout tomorrow. we're going to sneak some sunshine in between the clouds. you will see those showers rote

at a time back -- rotate back in. looks like things will settle down tomorrow night. numbers are mainly in the 50s. and then as we look out for your first full week of spring, looking a whole lot like winter as we've got another storm system that's going to move in late in the day on tuesday. by tuesday afternoon, the first part of that front will move onshore. heavy rain expected to move in overnight. another system hot on its heals behind that. looks like we are going to keep things very unsettled and very wet in the bay area right into next weekend. that's a look at the weather. back to you. thank you. we will a new era in airliners was shown off today. boeing introduced its newest and largest passenger plane. the 747 -- 8. plane workers were there to cheer on the new

achievement. the new plane can carry up to 467 passengers with a range of nearly 7,000 miles. the company expected -- expects to deliver the jets by the end of the year. maybe you want to experience a miracle on the hudson. now is your chance. the plane that made the splash down in 2009 is being sent to charlotte, north carolina to go on display. it opens next january. it will focus on the technology that helped captain silly put the plane down in the icy water. taped interviews will also be included. all 150 people on board survived after hitting a flock of geese. next, the free concerts that you can see next weekend being held by some big name singers. a toy band back lash. only access 20% of your brain?

accusetic guitar. brittany spears' show will be sunday at noon. fans can startle lining up at 9:00 a.m. they will be filled on a first come first ---- basis. th well, a merger between two of the top u.s. wireless carry years is in the works tonight. at&t says it will be t mobile from its german owner. it's a deal valued at 39 billion in cash in company stock. tatis the second largest -- the merger will make at&t the largest carrier in the nation. both companies have approved the deal but it will face tough scrutiny by regulators. the ban stops here when it comes to those toys in kid
