from oakland airport. cracks-- found in th a small plane nosedives into the ground just after taking off from oakland airport. cracks found in three more southwest airlines jets. grounded for inspection. what was found on the jet that ripped off to oakland three days ago. if someone leaves a message, i have to check. >> be prepared to pay the price for violating the hand's free law. booed off the stage in detroit. people walked out of the charlie sheen show. was it any better in chicago? good evening. a pilot is dead after his small plane crashed in the east bay shortly after taking off from the oakland airport. >> reporter: the single engine

plane crashed with such force the nose with the pilot inside was buried in mud on the edge of san leandro bay nearby the airport. it flew about a mile at low elevation, then dropped. >> the airplane did get a couple hundred feet of altitude, then continued to descend, and crash landed in a body of water called san leandro marina, but it's in the city of alameda. >> reporter: a golfer not far from the crash ran to the plane. another golfer said the nearby rescuerer was covered in mud. >> he said a plane went down near the 13th hole. he jumped the fence and went over to try to help. >> reporter: but there was nothing anyone could do. witnesses could tell the low flying plane was in trouble as

soon as it took off. >> the engine failed, and they heard the plane go down into the marina. several individuals were unsuccessful, because of the way he was situated in the mud. >> reporter: the plane was up for perhaps a minute before it crashed. faa investigators began work this evening, ntsb investigators are expected to begin their work first thing in the morning. >> i just want to share, obviously, our condolences to the family and friends of this pilot. it's a real somber mood at the site at this time. but we're just really sorry for what happened here today. such a rarity for these types of circumstances to happen at oakland airport. i've been here for nine years and this is the first time anything of this nature has happened here. >> reporter: the airplane has usaf markings on it, but we're told the airplane is privately owned. it's no longer part of the air

force. you see lights behind me tonight. police officers are guarding the sight until the national transportation safety board arrives tomorrow. now to the problem with southwest airlines. cracks were found, and repaired on the same southwest 737 that made an emergency landing friday night in arizona. that's according to federal records. a year ago, cracks were found in a joint where two sections of the plane's skin are rivetted together. today another 300 southwest flights are canceled. a total of 40 flights were canceled at oakland. at sfo15 cancelations. we have not heard how many flights out of san jose are impacted. similar problems are being found in other planes. tonight, investigators say cracks like those in the damaged yet are found in three

more planes. >> reporter: the national transportation safety board announced southwest airlines found cracks in the fuselage of three aircraft inspected by the company. it's the same problem believed to have forced a 737 jet to make an emergency landing in yuma, arizona, friday. >> was the aircraft well maintained, and should it have been maintained better? that's exactly why we're here, to look at why this problem occurred. >> reporter: passengers captured video of the hole in the fuselage. southwest mechanics sought out this section of the plane's aluminum skin, and will send it to washington. investigators say the cracking would not have been visible to the naked high. multiple findings of cracks in the fuselage last month. they were all repaired. when the hole ripped open in flight, the cabin depressurized. oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling, and the plane made a

rapid descent. >> the airplane desended from 30,000 feet, which was its cruising altitude to 11,000 feet. >> reporter: 300 flight cancelations on saturday. and hundreds more sunday. >> this is a fine, and a very safe aircraft. 25% of the aircraft that are being flown today are 737s. >> southwest says the cancelations will continue for at least a few days. in new york, cbs news. >> passengers on the flight that made the emergency landing are getting a full refund, and two round trip tickets for future flights. southwest airlines passengers we talked to seemed to be taking this in stride. at oakland airport, most travelers had heard about the problems, but they are not

worried about flying and can deal with flight disruptions. >> i would be more upset if i knew something like that happened, and they didn't do their job making sure we're safe. >> i don't have a problem with that. >> according to southwest's website, its fleet has an average age of just over 11 years. each aircraft flies an average of six times a day. many accidents blamed on cell phone usage. more than 5,000 fatalities were blamed on distracted driving in 2009. beginning tomorrow, the chp is cracking down on distracted drivers. >> reporter: most people know it's illegal, and dangerous.

yet men people still openly admit to using their cell phones while driving. >> i probably try and answer a text, maybe. not very often. >> especially when it keeps ringing. it feels like something is emergency. >> if someone leaves me a message, i have to check. >> i replay yes or no at stop signs. it's a habit. >> reporter: the chp always enforces the laws against distracted driving, but this month, they're stepping it up. >> this is about life or death. this is a situation, in which no matter how high the fine is, if you kill somebody, you cannot bring that person back to life. >> reporter: a local politician wants to up the ante, increasing the base fine for cell phone violations from 20 to $50. >> my goal is not to raise revenue. my goal is to save lives.

>> reporter: he outlined the bill that outlawed cell phone usage in 2008. >> also a point on your driver's license if there's a subsequent offense. >> reporter: how much depends on where you're busted. >> why do you still do it? >> i guess we're not very smart when it comes to that. >> trying to get better. i cannot say that i have not ever done it. but i'm making a very good habit and an effort not to do it. >> reporter: in san francisco, ann mackavik cbs 5. los angeles police say the suspect's attacked bryan stow outside dodger stadium after the season opener. a relative says he's in critical, but stable condition, and might have to have brain

surgery. stow's wife started a fund this weekend to help pay her husband's medical bills. lawmakers and law officers are calling it unconscionable behavior that will not be tolerated in either of our ballparks or either of our cities. a county supervisor in l.a. is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrests of the two suspects. this is a look at them. they're believed to be between 18 and 25 years old. the damage estimate from california's tsunami keeps surging. santa cruz harbor was one of the hardest hit when the tsunami hit our coast after the japanese earthquake. the damag estimate in the state is now $48 million. that's $4 million more than the previous estimate. the state is requesting a disaster declaration, hoping to get millions of dollars in

federal aid for repair costs. in order to help prevent a fire tragedy, a politician has this advice. trim your eucalyptus trees. they are highly combustible because of their oils. >> they mentioned that, we're extremely lucky, because the trees were trimmed. otherwise, if these eucalyptus had ignited, it would have been a different story. >> no word on what sparked the fire. she also encourages people in her district to park their cars in their garages, not on the street, that will make it easier for fire trucks and engines to get to the scene of the fire. those hands free faucets, why some are discovered to be less hygienic, and are being removed from some hospitals. two sold out venues in las

serious health problem. new research suggests those who ften at night- if you suffer from restless legs trying to get to sleep, it may be a sign of more serious

health problems. new research suggests those who twitch their legs at night tend to have thicker hearts, and that raises the risk for stroke. doctors released those findings today. hands free faucets may actually be less hygienic than old fashioned manual ones. a pneumonia causing bacteria more often in electronic faucets. the theory is the complex valves give bacteria more places to go. based on those findings, johns hopkins hospital in baltimore removed all of its hands free faucets and recommended other hospitals do the same. recalled raw turkey burgers. the meat may be contaminated. it includes jenny o's, each containing 12 individually wrapped burgers. the product is only sold at

a calm night out there tonight. that ridge continues to build, and looks like the offshore winds will continue to blow. that means our skies are going to stay nice and clear across most of the bay area, and setting sail on what looks like a fantastic day tomorrow. probably the warmest days of the week. a couple of clouds trying to dump over the top. most of that, high cirrus clouds. otherwise, we're looking good. tomorrow, here comes that sunshine. the temperatures warming up well into the 70s in most spots. a lot of 70s inside the bay. the coastline, a little cooler. still in the 60s, and a whole lot of sunshine. outside right now, 40s and 50s along the bay area. if you do plan on traveling around, we'll see sunshine and temperatures up into the 70s. 78 in sacramento. 71 in fresno. 50s and 60s into the high country. if you plan on heading up there, looking good. plan on slushy conditions. spring skiing up there, as we've got some above normal temperatures in the area. slushy snow by the middle of the day. still looks like that ridge

will hold on for one more day here. a series of storms trying to develop here. enjoy tomorrow. it's going to be sunny, and warm, probably the warmest day of the week. now we start to watch things go south, and go south in a hurry. we're going to cool down around the bay area. 76 in morgan hill. 75 in fremont. 66 in pacifica. as you head to the east bay, those temperatures are running up into the 70s. 77degrees in brentwood. 77 in antioch. and about 73 degrees in berkely. we should see plenty of sunshine north bay. 76 in napa. about 76 in santa rosa. and about 73 degrees in kempfield. enjoy this one. by tuesday, the wind starts to switch direction. we'll start to cool down those temperatures around the bay area. probably pick up a couple of patches of fog, coast side. as we head in towards

wednesday, clouds starting to roll in. becoming partly cloudy around the bay area. the temperatures continue to drop. by thursday, look what happens there. hard to believe. temperatures struggling to get into the 60s, as we head in toward thursday. a chance of showers, as well, staying unsettled, and probably cooling into the weekend. >> from childhood. april showers bring may flowers. a streaming video feed from an 80-foot high eagles nest in the midwest has been an internet sensation. >> reporter: over the weekend, more than 100,000 people have tuned into a live feed of an eagles nest high in a tree in northern iowa. it's train on a nest where a pair of eagles has been guarding three eggs for more than a month. the site crashed saturday morning, when the first chick emerged. the second egg hatched about

>> i love charlie sheen, but i thought it was going to be something more than it was. >> it was a total waste of money. it really was. >> not good. >> honestly, i felt really bad for him. everyone was booing. >> reporter: many of those people left the show before he was even done. >> the worst show ever. >> reporter: the first stop on his 20 city tour, violent torpedo of truth, defeat is not an option turned out to be a major bust. this video shows the audience loudly booing sheen, before he starts to tell stories about his cocaine use. he launched the tour after a highly public meltdown. he criticized chick lori on national television and radio stations, which resulted in warner brothers firing him. not all fans were let down by sheen's debut. >> the show was amazing.
