system's death toll above 20. michael has the latest as residents pick up the pieces. >> strong storms ripped homes from their foundations then tore apart several businesses in north carolina saturday night. >> you couldn't see out of a window. things were slashing around and things were popping. >> from above, you could see right into a lowe's home improvement store. an apparent tornado hopped from homes to big box stores to trucks. >> we believe that there are perhaps as many as 62 tornadoes that have touched down across the state in many of our counties about 20 counties that are clearly identified. >> in south carolina, six people are okay after a tornado tore the roof off of a church. >> thank you jesus. >> the same storm spawned tornadoes that terrorized people in at least four states over the past two days. >> dang, look at that thing. >> twisters like this killed more than half a dozen people

there, including a mother and her two kids north of mobile. >> oh man, this is a tragedy. >> jean and her 11-year-old and 14-year-old were inside this mobile home when the storm tossed it down a hill. >> sheldon, he is 14, he was laying beside. he passed away and then we kept looking and found jean. she was up under rubble. >> storm is the deadliest yet this tornado system. the low pressure system stretches from the gulf to canada, bringing heavy rains and winds to new york saturday night. residents brace for the worst as the national weather service issued tornado warnings up and down the east coast. in new york, michael for cbs news. a prominent southern california resident is accused of spreading hate. the target, president obama. one woman said she is defending many in her own party. >> it would be shocking to almost anyone who received an e- mail of a family of eight with

a picture of the president of the united states superimposed and the words, now you know why no birth certificate. it was shocking to the chairman of the republican party of orange county who received the e-mail from maryland davenport, a republican central committee member. >> i saw the e-mail. i looked at it and i immediately responded and told her it was dripping with racism and it was in poor taste and that she shouldn't send e-mails like that to me again. >> orange county republican party chairman, scott called the e-mail dispickable. >> and i'm asking for her to step down off the central committee, she should resign. >> tea partyers gathering at this home were quick to say no. >> i've never run into angry people, especially racist. hello, we are here at the home of a ncaa member and the president -- so it's nothing that we are used to here with a

northern california tea party at all. >> gary hosted the tea party gathering on the party's second anniversary. >> whether it's in the democrat party, any kind of racist act towards our president or anybody else? it isn't evil? >> e-mail went to an unknown number. the cbs reporter who contacted marilyn said davenport told us she sent e-mail as a joke and blamed the news media for blowing it out of proportion. now the chairman is asking daven fort to step down. >> well, the e-mail is very contrary to the message we want to send to the voters. ethnic outreach and building the party and we can't have people that represent the party that are elected officials out making racist statements against people. whether they are the president of the united states or anybody else. >> although she defends her e-

mail, orange county republicans are responding quickly. chairman is not only asking davenport to resign, but calling for an ethics investigation. >> don, thank you very much. well that tea party event was one of many around the country today marking the second anniversary of the tea party's tax day rally. the place to be for republicans with presidential ambitions. trump received a warm welcome at a tea prty welcome in florida. the billionaire blamed president oh ma'am's foreign policy for what he sees as united states loss of prestige. >> we have a disaster on our hands. we have a man right now that almost certainly will go down as the worst president in the history of the united states. >> and in madison, wisconsin, sarah palin told a cheering crowd that wisconsin governor,

scott walker, was right in stripping unions of their bargaining pow el. >> you saw these violence. trash your capital and vandalize business. madison, you held your ground. your governor did the right thing. >> hundreds of labor supporters picketed the rally, but 6500 people converged on the call tall. it was hard to tell how many were labor supporters. >> a r thousands of tea party supporters turned out to celebrate the second anniversary. among those, we are a group of teenage partyers who are working to getting more teens involved with politics. oughted air traffic controller falls asleep on the job. this time, this morning in my moimmy. manuel on what the faa is doing now to make sure it doesn't

happen again. >> air traffic controller fell asleep at work early saturday morning. the controller was on a midnight shift, manning a radar facility. air traffic tapes show the controller did not miss any calls from planes trying to land or take off. 12 controllers and two managers were also on duty. the sleeping controller was suspended. the newest problem prompted the head of the federal aviation administration to prohibit scheduling practices that most often lead to fatigue on the job. those changes will go into effect tuesday. faa administrator released this statement that says, we are taking important steps that will make a big difference. we know we will need to do more. this is just the beginning. >> i add a sucket night shifts at more than 2 dozen airports. saturday was the 7th time air

traffic controller st were caught sleeping on the juror. >> we aren't sitting around to make excuses. >> the change cams after a flight plage a corral once early in the morning at reno- tahoe international airport. the plane landed safely. the faa and national air traffic controller's association will launch a series of nationwide meetings to help improve air traffic safety starting monday in atlanta. cbs news. an east bay restaurant named after william went to the cub by outside. he is raising money for brian stowe and until 11:00 tonight. the restaurant will do donate of the proceeds to the fund. a raffle and auction was also

neglect left this 4-year-old docker spaniel tied up in knotts. >> these are toes down here with the nails curled. it looks like they are curled back into his pad. >> it's so thick, its nails were twisted trying to get through. the lack of simple grooming allowed to animal cruelty that left the dogs crippled, infected, and in pain. >> let's get him over here. okay. come on. >> after emergency room grooming, he is on his road to recovery. >> he is being taken by pain medication. his feet being deformed and now we have taken the mats off. he doesn't have the normal muscle movement he should have. >> he moves around on shaky

hurt worse and had to be put down. animal control is looking for the pit bulls. earth day is next friday. they planted bushes and trees and removed graffiti, cleaned up the shore lin. three up from vol tores is just one of many environmental projects all over california today. funding cut to state parks, they are depending more and more on volunteer efforts, such as this one. >> meteorologist is joining us now and is there rain on the way? >> we don't want to ware about that jet yet. and some of that starting to make it way on shore right now. not a bad evening out there as we are looking over san francisco. but yeah, more of those clouds will start to push on shore overnight tonight. it will take longer to burn off tomorrow. not going to be a high day as high pressure sits overhead.

tonight. he got drunk in new orleans and argued with his wife whether a house they were in front of was theirs. police say cage insisted the house was the house they were renting, but when his wife said he wasn't, he grabbed her arm. police say cage then began hitting cars and tried to get into a cab, but the cab refused to drive him. he then apparently argued with the police officer. this is a photo of cage after his arrest. cage was arrested for disturbing the peace and public drunkenness. the royal wedding is a week away from next friday. and it's no surprise that this is the most popular video on youtube right now. take a look. companies spoof of prince william's wedding to kate middleton has gone viral. as barry shows us, neighbors are getting ready for the big
