get it reopened. as michael reports, some of the damage is devastating. >> tornado. >> a tornado that struck lambert st. louis international airport tore off part of the roof and blew out the windows. wind howling in and employees running to safety as parts of the ceiling come crashing down. >> we got to the terminal, lights were out. there was glass everywhere. it was open. there was blood everywhere from where people had been cut. >> the damage to the airport is so substantial the city shut it down until sunday morning. except for limited arrival saturday night. >> as you see, we're not going to have the prettiest airport tomorrow. but we will have an operating expairpt it's a good thing for us. >> the closure of the airport is having a ripple effect across the country. here at laguardia airport, this american airlines flight to st. louis is among the cancellations. the severe weather also destroyed two dozen homes and

damaged hundreds of others. blew the roof off a church and flipped over cars in suburbs around the airport. >> my whole life flashed in front of me and i just hope i never experience that again. >> the national weather service says at its strongest, the tornado had wind speeds measuring more than 166 miles per hour. making it the most powerful to hit st. louis since 1967. >> it is certainly devastating. it is really heart wrenching to see the amount of homes that have been destroyed, flattened, the number of businesses that have stained significant damages. >> another storm hit the small airport saturday night, damaging the hanger and an office building. in new york, michael for cbs news. >> the search for an 11-year- old missing national forest will resume tomorrow morning. rescue crews searched by air and on the ground for about 24 hours for the boy who was last seen friday night about 6:00. investigators say he was hiking along highway 180 with his family when he disappeared. authorities believe he fell

into the cold water which had a fast current at the time. his father was the last one to see him. >> sat him down on the granite as he turned to help another gentleman that was with him. he turned around and his son was gone. >> a few pieces of boy's clothes have been found by authorities. but this is still a search and rescue mission. the boy and family are from the east coast. they werevacationing. oakland is facing a decline in neighborhoods. between east and west oakland show seven fewer shootings, nine fewer rapes and 118 fewer robberies for the first quarter of this year in oakland compared to last. however, the same period did see two more homicides. now some oakland business owners are taking another approach to keep crime down. ann on a new kind of neighborhood watch. >> we have to protect

ourselves. >> over the past year, more chinatown businesses have been using cameras to ward off crimes. >> i have the camera on the sidewalk and the camera inside the store. >> he spent almost $1,000. >> it's okay. it's good to have. >> it's worth it. >> among all of the store owners i spoke with in this neighborhood, there was a sense of needing to take matters into their own hands because with limited budgets, there's only so much they could count on the police to do. >> if you call the police, what will they do? >> this restaurant owner doesn't have faith in the cameras either. she had her windows broken twice and video has not been helpful. >> we saw, you know, somebody but you couldn't see their face. they had a hood, so nothing you can do. >> at an event to roll out a dozen new cameras around the lincoln neighborhood center, the police say they work. >> we have seen a drop in crime in this area. we are going to stop you and

question you and figure out what's going on. >> when something happens, and we are with the police department. >> this local crime prevention chair has some advice. >> so when you come down to chinatown, be sure to smile and don't try to cheat on your wife and bring your girlfriend here. >> you might have one fewer restaurant to come to. this owner is ready to sell. >> nothing you can do, i tell you, there's nothing you can do. >> in oakland, cbs 5. pension and salaries were common complaints at a san francisco town hall meeting. the city is grappling with a $300 million deficit and many people including the mayor say a big chunk of the savings must come from the salaries and pensions of city employees. but talks with muni and police officers unions have stalled. >> we negotiate all of our differences out and in these very hard times, these very hard economic times, it's not about pointing a finger and blaming. >> the mayor says the town

hall meetings are useful for helping city leaders understand the public sentiment. he says the input helps in making the tough decisions over cutbacks. hundreds of san jose city workers will learn they will lose their jobs in june. the city is trying to close a $115 million budget gap and says it still needs concessions from several unions. the decision on the layoff will come when the city releases its budget may 2. >> native americans continue their fight to keep a sacred burial site in the east bay in tact. they held a vigil and gathering today at glenn cove waterfront park. the native americans say it is sacred space and shouldn't be touched. they joined in protest today. >> i think it's beautiful. i think we have people from all walks of life that have come

out to support us and to pray with us and understand what the issues are and really want this place to remain open land. >> the dispute is getting state and federal attention. u.s. department of justice and state senator noreen avins stepped in to reach an acceptable resolution. it is a mystery. dead or dying leopard sharks are washing up on the peninsula. a dozen have been spotted recently on the lagoons. don has a theory that shark experts have about what may be causing the deaths. >> reporter: residents of this redwood community are used to seeing fairly large populations of birds and other wildlife along the slews of the south bay. when ailing sharks began to show up a few days ago, they were concerned. over the past few days, volunteers picked up a dozen dead and dying sharks. another sign of trouble, a bat ray swimming lazily near a

dying shark. behavior not normal one observer says. >> he almost came out of the water a few times right up on the shore. >> but rescue isn't easy. when volunteers carry the ray to open water, it swam right back. >> the bat rays nor the sharks are starving. >> they can typically survive a lot of pollutants in the water and a lot of adverse living conditions. so to see one die indicates that something has happened to the eco system. >> today investigators from the shark research foundation were leaning toward a not so obvious explanation. suffocation. reportsreports -- the simplest explanation may be diminished water quality resulting from flood gates designed to hold water in the lagoons even as tides go out. without the tide, the water is depleted of oxygen.

and advises redwood city -- >> now that developers know what goes wrong with their channels, perhaps they will develop healthier ones. don, cbs 5. and checking some bay area headlines now, fares are going up for golden gate bus and ferry riders. the district's board of directors approved a 5% hike yesterday for each of the next five years. the board is grappling with an estimated $89 million deficit. the fare hikes take effect july 1. twitter has made it official. its heart will remain in san francisco. the company's financial officer tweeted the news yesterday. city leaders cut a deal to keep twitter in town by providing an exception from a local payroll tax. the board of supervisors approved the six year exception earlier this week. it's the final chapter for a beloved bookstore. a different book shop is set to

close its door by the end of the month. no official reason was given. it was struggling financially. the store opened in 1985 and quickly became a social hub that celebrated lgbt riders and readers, customers will miss it. >> i came out in '89 and i remember the shop being here then and it makes me sad because independent bookstores are closing and especially gay and lesbian bookstores, there aren't many of them. >> a book shop manager says sales will determine the store's final day. it is a sugary sweet drink that packs a powerful punch. >> it is designed to really encourage young folks to engage in binge drinking. >> the five in one concoction unifying attorney generals across the country. another airline perk going away. what united continental will no longer give customers. also a big wedding and a big

it's charging a whopping 5.69 check out this station in orlando, florida. there might be a reason why there's no prices posted. it is charging $5.69 per gallon. according to several gas price tracking sites, it is the highest price in the nation.

many tourists used the station before returning rental cars on the way to the airport. customers are upset because by the time they realize how expensive the gas is, they already stopped to fill her up. and if gas prices are too high, you may want to check out wal-mart's new delivery service. they are testing home delivery in san jose. it is called wal-mart to go. customers can order groceries, health, and beauty products and household supplies and have them delivered right to their house at a specified time. wal-mart is facing increased competition from sites like amazon.com. no word on if they'll test delivery in other cities. a computer outage at amazon.com is in its third day and causing interruptions at dozens of websites who rent space on their server. a spokesperson said the company has made some progress fixing the problem, but it's not happening as quickly as amazon would like. it's unclear how many people are impacted by the outage.

also a new reason tonight to pack fewer suitcases. united continental will no longer give customers discounts for prepaying to check your bags. in the past, those who did it online before getting to the airport saved $2 on the first bag and $3 on the second. now everyone will pay $25 for the first and $35 for the second. the change started for tickets sold since march 9. this easter weekend americans will buy tons of marsh mellow peeps. fake grass and toys co. we have more disposable income than we think? a new commerce department shows we spent $1.2 trillion on nonessential goodies such as yachts, jewelry, booze, even candy. that's 11% of total consumer spending. a decade ago we spent 9.3% of those unneeded items and in 1959, we spent just 4%.

you got that lawrence? spending too much money. >> peeps are essential spending. how do you pass those little things? >> and they last for a year. >> folks outside tonight, we have a lot of clouds but the showers diminished. boy, there's not a whole lot of energy with the storm system moving on by. but you get the idea. the clouds will pass tonight. there's a weak cold front that will slide on shore overnight tonight. that will reinvigorate the chance for showers developing later on tonight and in toward tomorrow morning. all right, let's take a look at the forecast as we head in toward tomorrow. we are expecting cloudy skies on easter sunday. there's a slight chance of showers around the bay area. it's going to be very, very light. bring an umbrella with you and you'll be fine. a lot of 60s showing up elsewhere. outside right now, a lot of 50s. we have clouds moving on through. some partial clearing this towards the san francisco area right now. as you travel around the state, you'll find a mixed bag. you have mild temperatures and

partly cloudy skies in fresno, but if you head further to the north, showers in the sacramento valley and the high country. we are looking at showers in that direction. not snow, but too warm. we are going to see showers there. rain becoming likely. more significant storm system going to drop into the bay area and end up in the mountains. so here we go. not much on the satellite image. just a weak line here and that's your system, very warm frontal system that is moving through the bay area. it is bring to bring with it a slight chance of showers. i think as we head through the afternoon, things should begin to taper off. the latest computer run is showing showers. midnight tonight and widely scattered rain drops outside. maybe some heavy drizzle, that's about it. and as we head toward tomorrow morning, looks like things begin to pick up about sunrise or so as we are going to see showers moving on through. widely scattered and it's going to be hit and miss throughout the day. not a major rain event.

if you get .5 of an inch of rain fall, that's a good amount. maybe we'll squeeze a little sunshine. not going to be enough to melt those chocolate eggs outside. those temperatures mainly in the mid 60s inland. 60s inside the bay and 50s out toward the coast. how about the next couple days? we have that stronger system likely to drop down on monday to bring more rain to the bay area. that looks more substantial than the one coming through for tomorrow. as we head in towards tuesday, we have 70s beginning to show up as high pressure begins to sneak in and looking a little like spring. we're going to warm things up on wednesday and on thursday, probably going to stay dry into next weekend. the next couple days, easter is a tough call. all the kids want to be out there. maybe a little damp in the morning. >> it looks like spring on the set right now. >> it does. >> a little pastel. all right lawrence, thank you. well it's a fruity drink with the alcohol equivalent of five beers. the state wants it off store

shelves. it's called colt 45 blast, also known as binge in a can. it sells for as low as $3 a can. now the california attorney general is joining with 18 other ag's to urge its manufactures to stop making it. >> it's designed to encourage young folks to engage in binge drinking and it's something that all people should be concerned about. >> the manufacture put out a statement saying blast is meant for those above legal drinking age and that the alcohol content is clearly marked on the packaging. rebels in libya are claiming a major victory tonight. why leaders are reacting with caution. plus kate's wedding dress revealed. it's just around the corner. how britain's future princess is changing the future of fashion.

something more lean and long versus the opulance of diana. >> i would like to see her in something modern. i think it will be nice to see both. cleaner lines. >> no matter the style of the dress, the veil, even the diamond accessories she might add to it. there's no question kate middleton's wedding gown will set off trends for brides for years to come. >> tho doubt. i for one am excited to see that happen. to kind of switch gears up a little bit. we've seen a certain look for a long time. >> if she comes up the aisle, the world is watching. >> not only is it watching, but they are going to be sketchy and starting a whole new trend, which will be nice because maybe she will say you don't have to bare everything to look gorgeous. >> she has that long beautiful hair. do you think she'll wear it up?
