strikes have killed the youngest son of libyan leader, moammar gadhafi. gadhafi himself survived the attack on a single story house. the people of libya are reacting. >> reporter: fireworks lit up the night sky in the libyan city of banghazi. his son was killed by a nato air strike and gadhafi himself survived the attack. >> the leader himself is in good health. he wasn't harmed. his wife also is in good health. >> three of gadhafi's grandchildren were reportedly killed in the strike on a one story house in tripoli. nato says its missions are aimed at libyan command centers and do not target gadhafi. the leader appeared on libyan state tv earlier on saturday calling for a cease fire and negotiations, but he refused once again to step down.

rebel commanders quickly rejected the offer, saying time for compromise has passed. he was gadhafi's sixth son. in recent years, he studied in germany. cbs news, new york. so far, there has been no comment or confirmation from nato on the death of gadhafi's son. gas prices are at an all- time high. tonight, senator barbra boxer says the solutions and blame lie with big oil. what needs to change. >> gas the price it is, i can't afford it. >> as oil prices and oil industry profits surge, drivers are spending $80 to $100 to fill their tanks with gas. the cost of fuel is pushing up the cost of just about everything else. more in the middle east choked some supplies and sends the cost to about $113 a barrel.

something california senator, barbra boxer, and other u.s. senators hope to change. >> writers calculated earlier this month that speculation adds between $21 and $26 a barrel to the price of oil. about 1/5 the cost. >> oil companies make huge profits. >> last year, chevron made a lot of money. >> chevron perhaps eager to head off negative fallout of $6.1 billion has been touting it corporate responsibility in a series of ads. glefer penny and more went into bringing energy to the world. >> the economy is tough right now. >> despite the profit, senator boxer says the oil industry continues to collect welfare. >> end corporate welfare that we are giving to big oil right now and use those billions to reduce the need for oil. >> boxer says chevron should drill on the 70,000 acres of

oil the company holds, adding use it or lose it. a spokesman told cbs 5 the senator knows it takes 5 to 10 years to start pumping from a lease. senator boxer says it may be time to start releasing oil from the reserve. the last time that happened in 2005, they released 11 million- barrels and over three months the price dropped 31%. at today's gas prices, that would be more than $1 a gallon. >> people would like to see that happen. don knapp, thank you. the man shot and killed outside his oakland home last night was intentionally targeted. that's according to police. 39-year-old became the city's 38th homicide victim this year. last year at this time, oakland recorded 30 homicides. the incident hit close to home for the attendeis at today's town hall meeting. community members are frustrated with a lack of

police presence. >> freddie is describing the shooting last night just down the block. >> yeah, i was like right in church and i knew that was close. i was like, wow. >> police haven't caught anybody in yesterday's murder, but they believe it may have been a botched robbery. this crime was blocks away from the location of a town hall meeting saturday about preventing violence. >> the citizens have to get involved at a greater degree than they ever have before. >> some here are crime victims themselves. >> i was recently robbed a year ago. >> i was walking in this area and it happened right here. >> both men dodged bullets in separate mugging. the gun misfired. >> i am still here and blessed to be here to speak. >> in days -- >> he had an accomplice. he told his friend to shoot me, but he didn't. >> both are frustrated with the lack of police presence in oakland, which is about to get worse. >> we're not going to have enough police officers to

spread around. so we are going to need the public to come out and support us. >> police department is looking at more budget cuts. some positions will be left open. 10 to 20 others could simply be cut. >> we have to make a target. we have to teach people not to be have exposure where they may be put themselves to become a victim. >> the police do this and mayor do this, it takes a community to solve this. we have to get out there and be proactive. >> in oakland, cbs 5. governor jerry brown has had surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his nose. the governor's office said today brown had the procedure yesterday after test results showed evidence of carcinoma. brown had to have reconstructive surgery to his nose. it was all done with local an stet anesthetic.

he will not make public appearances until the stitches are removed. police in several bay area cities teamed up today with a drug enforcement agency for a drug takeback event. this is the one in concord this morning and the goal of the event to allow people to bring in expired and unused prescription drugs. >> well i know you aren't supposed to flush anything down the toilet anymore and i was worried about throwing it in the garbage. how do you get rid of this kind of stuff? >> flushing medications can contaminate the water supply. events are taking place across the country. as part of a similar program last september, americans turned in 121-tons of prescription drugs and more than 4,000 sites. drugs collected today will be burned. the number of dead continues to rise as the grim search continues across the seven southern states hit by a

series of tornadoes wednesday. so far, 342 people are known dead. alabama was the hardest hit with 250 people killed. president obama declared the state a major disaster. the national guard, fema, and various volunteer groups are helping the survivors. >> number one priority has been for the last few days focusing on life safety, we have been doing search and rescue and unfortunately, that is turning mostly to search now at this time. >> tomorrow five members of the obama administration, including the secretaries of housing, agriculture will visit mississippi. monday's space shuttle launch can proceed as planned. yesterday's liftoff of endeavor was delayed by a malfunctioning heater. the mission's commander is mark kelly and his wife, gabrielle giffords is at the kennedy space center for the launch.

d by a school bus. dramatic on board video shows what happened when a san antonio, texas city bus was rear ended by a school bus. the passengers were tossed around like rag dolls. >> it was just another stop on route 550 when they were thrown from their seats. slammed into the railing, and hit so hard, jean was one of the passengers on the bus. that's him sitting in the front. now watch as he is tossed to the floor. >> minding your own business, the next thing you know, you

get hit. >> this rider stepping on to the bus injures his foot. and the bus driver, like most on board appears to have suffered whiplash. according to police records, the driver of the school bus told investigators the brakes weren't working. but the brakes checked out and the driver was terminated. >> 21 claims have been filed on this accident against the district. >> at a time when the school district is scrubbing its district to the bare bones to survive the next year because of the state budget cuts, certainly is a blow. >> accidents involving north side isd school buses are rare of the 800 buses out on the road every day, only three this year have been involved in major accidents. but for passengers like rodes. >> every time i get on, makes me real nervous. >> all it took was one. well charlie sheen brings

his one man show to the bay area tonight. and sheen's violent torpedo of truth tour arrived? san francisco this evening. sheen announced that profits from merchandise sold will be donated to brian stowe's medical care. remains in critical condition after being beaten by dodgers fans in la nearly a month ago. president obama proved to be a skillful standup comedian at the white house correspondents dinner tonight. mr. obama briefly secured donald trump's effort to cast doubts on his place of birth. >> no one is happier. no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than the donald. and that's because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter. like did we fake the moon

landing? what really happened in roswell? and where are biggy and 2pac? >> the president drew a few smiles for his efforts, but trump did not seem as amused when saturday night live comedian, seth myers also mocked him. well back in the bay area, we are all smiles because of this weather you delivered, it's beautiful. >> a lot of sunshine out there today and enjoying it all the way to the coastline. the temperatures began to heat up to a beautiful sunset earlier this evening and we'll have a great sunshine with no clouds to speak of. over the bay, we are looking good and you know what? those winds turned offshore overnight and that means we are going to see beautiful conditions all the way to the coastline. across much of the state, you'll see nice clear skies and temperatures are going to be heating up for tomorrow. we're looking at 70s, maybe some low 80s inland.

plenty of 70s inside the bay and out toward the coastline. we are lucky, maybe some low 70s there by tomorrow afternoon. numbers right now fairly mild in spots. 60 degrees in oakland. 61 in livermore. you get the idea. working on a fairly mild evening. a warm day coming tomorrow. should be as high as 80 degrees in redding. 70s into the central valley. cool 50s in high country. we will continue to do so. there's one storm system right here that is going to roll over the top of that ridge. that may just help to cool things down as we head in toward monday. for tomorrow, here comes that offshore wind. sunshine and warmer weather. those winds start to subside making their way to the coastline. that's exactly what we are going to see as we look toward tomorrow afternoon. so with that in mind, the temperatures looking very nice tomorrow. great day to get out there and enjoy and it's going to be sunny everywhere you go. 68 degrees tomorrow afternoon. about 69 in pacifica.

you get inside the bay, 79 degrees in morgan hill. 78 in san jose. 76 degrees in fremont and 76 in union city. east bay temperatures near 80 degrees into places like antioch and brentwood. double 7's in livermore. the same in pleasantton and 79 degrees in san leandro. it's going to be beautiful everywhere you go. 80 degrees in the napa valley. one of the warmer spots in santa rosa. 76 degrees in san rafael and 76 degrees in san francisco. so looking out over the next few days, we will watch the temperatures cooling down a little bit. monday, we may see a few patches of fog move in along the coastline. not going to last long. high pressure begins to build in behind that system and we start to talk about offshore winds again. come tuesday and wednesday and thursday, that will be the peek of the heat this weak. temperatures moving well into the 80s. haven't seen temperatures like this all spring long and it

high marks for their looks, as did the queen, camilla, and the mother of the bride, but fergie's daughters were pinned as being over the top. as well as victoria beckham. other memorable moments, william's god daughter not so captivated by the kiss. and a westminster abbey church usher captured cart wheeling down the aisle. like everyone involved, he too was thrilled that the carefully planned spectacle had gone so well. manuel, cbs news, london. a special wedding anniversary present from mariah carey and her husband, twins. mariah carey gave birth to a boy and girl. they have not yet named their kids. surprise they were going to be born. but a rep says the proud parents listened to we belong together after the children were born. they are expected to renew their wedding vows tomorrow to mark their third anniversary.

lindsay lohan wants to put the case of the stolen necklace behind her. a source close to lindsey says the actress is prepared to plead no contest to the theft charge she faces. lohan is accused of stealing a $2500 necklace. she initially faced a grand theft charge, but a judge reduced it last week. the raiders pick a guy with a very familiar name. you'll hear from the second rounder and this is a presidential race. yeah, the giants were in the nation's capital. good thing they didn't have to play these guys. sports minute up next.
