you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news on the cw. a mysterious explosion at an east bay apartment sends three people to the hospital. how one firefighter describes the scene. the search is on for two kids missing after a car thief takes off with them in the backseat. how the crook managed to get away with the car and the kids. it wasn't the rapture, but a small earthquake did shake part of the east bay. how people describe what they felt. you and i are living at the time of the end of the world. >> it's the apocalypse that never came. good evening. three people are hospitalized after a mysterious explosion in the east bay. it happened at an apartment building at 3600 silver oak. the fire that resulted started in one apartment and spread to

two others. don joins us from liver more with the latest. >> it was a loud, powerful explosion here on silver oaks way in livermore. the three people that lived in the apartment are in critical condition. all were air lifted to burn centers. two men were taken to valley medical center. a woman was flown to uc medical center in sacramento. battalion chief. >> when our crews got on scene, they found an apartment building with heavy smoke and three victims outside of the fire with burn injuries. > firefighters put out the fire quickly while others worked with the victims. they were initially treated on the scene, then taken by ambulance to a nearby high school and placed on helicopters and taken to hospitals. we don't normally see explosions and fire, it was

definitely an intense scene. neighbors felt heavy shaking in the building. >> any idea what caused the explosion? >> it's under investigation right now. the police department is taking the lead on that investigation. under investigation said to be suspicious in origin. i can tell you a few moments ago, i talked with a man here and we'll be talking with him later at 11:00 who said he saw the injuries. there was a man with a hand blown off. another man with head injuries. he said when the explosion went off, the building shook, they thought it was an earthquake. >> don knapp in livermore. thank you. well it wasn't the big world ending quake that an oakland man predicted, but one person thought judgment day had come. an earthquake struck around 7:00 tonight. people from around the bay area reported feeling the quake and some described it as a sharp jolt. a woman in alameda said she thought it was indeed the

rapture. there were no injuries reported. harold camping predicted a massive quake would strike tonight at 6:00. a statewide amber alert after someone stole a car with two kids inside in san joaquin county. stockton police say an arguing couple pulled over to a gas station around 3:30 this afternoon, got out of their car and left it running. a man jumped in and took off. in the car at the time, three- year-old and six-year-old sister. the suspect is unknown. police say he did drive off in a pink and red buick park avenue. license plate number 6bup713. anyone who spots the car is urged to contact police. if you watch tv, listen to radio, or look at billboards, you heard the world was supposed to end tonight. at least that's according to one oakland man. well it didn't happen. it wasn't the first time someone made that prediction.

be late. by camping's own estimates, it should have hit there already hours ago. >> it's particularly nice to be with you tonight. the world was supposed to come to an end ten minutes ago. >> camping arrived at today's date using a mathematical formula based on biblical numbers. >> it doesn't say anything about the bible. it says a lot about their imagination. >> most christians aren't buying it. >> i think it's a bunch of baloney. >> the mayan calendar calls for the end next year. >> how many times can the world end? >> the bible is clear. matthew 24: 36 says no one knows about that day, only the father. as for harold camping, he predicted the day would end in 1994. ben tracy, cbs news, los angeles. in the bay area, the

judgment day prediction came and went. a group including gay activists, atheists, and a member of the church gathered outside the oakland radio station that has been spreading word of the rapture. they have been hearing about for months. >> distorted the truth of the bible and so we are just here to reach out to people and make sure that we counter harold's message. >> the man who made the prediction, harold camping, has not been heard from since the passing of the 6:00 p.m. deadline. his associates say he left the radio station and said he did not plan to return. >> an extensive man hunt for an armed robber. mill valley police say a masked man stole more than $10,000 from a precious metals dealer today. the robber went into the precious metals around 10:15 this morning and forced employees to open the safe. >> the business was open at

the time the suspect came in the business with his handgun and i'm assuming demanded the money. there's no audio. there's only video. >> for two hours, police along with the sheriff's office searched for the suspect, but they didn't find him. police are not yet releasing the video or a suspect sketch. investigators are looking into the death of a seemingly healthy 25-year-old man booked into an oakland jail last night. police say michael was in the booking area when he started having problems breathing. doctors and nurses tend to him, but he stopped breathing and he died. the coroner's office will perform an autopsy next week. an impressive drug calls for the dea and agents didn't have to lift a finger. the agency says more than 28,000 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in during the second national prescription drug take back day in april. that's just for northern california. the campaign was launched to

eliminate access to and improper dumping of unused and expired medication. for years the bitter battle over a name pitted lawmakers over an ethnic community. at issue a welcome sign. after demonstrations and a compromise, the community can now say welcome to little sigon. ann shows celebration in the south bay. >> it's not a very big monument, but it's a big day for the community in san jose. >> very exciting. very exciting. >> this new sign now marks the cultural on clave near story road full of restaurants and shops. >> it is beginning. it is for people that come to the town, we welcome them from the little sigon. >> we accomplished this project with a will the of challenges. >> four years worth of fight with the city that led to pr tests and hunger strike outside of city hall, all over the

name. in 2007, the council voted to name the area the sigon business district, but the community here wouldn't have it. >> sigon is our former capital and we want to leave that name as a former capital. this is our home. homeland now, so we want to have in our memory it's little sigon. >> the compromise was to have the community pay for the monument with $10,000 in donations gathered from individuals and businesses. >> any money, even $# or $100, doesn't matter. >> here it finally is on the city owned strip. >> it's okay. >> this man lives nearby and while he's not vietnamese, he's glad they got their way. >> it's nice, real friendly. >> absent from the ceremony, councilwoman madison winn, many here are angry with her for not supporting their view. >> moving forward, this is just a fantastic opportunity.

so i'm going to ignore what happened and i'm going to say it's a great day. >> the community here says the next step is to get a sign on 101 directing more business into the district. in little sigon, cbs 5. mayor reid absent from the unveiling said he was pleased that private funds could be raised and that the community worked closely with the city to establish a new monument policy. well bullying is a big problem. >> just my size. i didn't want to cause any problems. i usually just kept it to myself. >> bullying is a big problem in our nation's schools. how schools are upgrading what they are doing to stop bullying. and he consoled gays and urged them to come out of the closet. now a new rule for harvey milk's old camera store. how it will be used to help those in crisis. it is the butt of many

what was once harvey milk's political campaign headquarters will become a suicide crisis call center. the celebration is planned for tomorrow's grand opening of the harvey milk call center by 19th and san francisco.

the site of the former castro camera store. tomorrow would have been the assassinated supervisor's 81st birthday. the call center is operated by a group that helps gay, lesbian, and transgender youth. you've heard about the terrible toll of school bullying and how some kinds recently ended their own lives because of it. many schools are stepping up efforts to stop bullying. one school district is ahead of the curve. >> reporter: high school seniors liam and joseph know what it's like to be bullied. in 7th grade, a group of kids did it to liam every day. > they would hit me or slap me in the back of the head. >> the bullying josh experienced was so rough, he changed schools. >> i used to get picked on for my size. i didn't want it cause any

problems. i usually just kept it to myself. >> their school district in massachusetts has taken steps to make all that less likely to happen today. the message is clear. bullying is not cool. this year liam and josh were among the school leaders who competed in a talent contest, raising money for antibullying activities, while the senior girls created antibullying posters in their marketing class. >> take a stand and lend a hand. >> those lessons begin early. this is third grade. >> how are you going to respectfully tell that person not to bully? >> you can say to the classmate, i'm going to go tell the teacher. >> is it tad ling if you watch someone bully and tell an adult? >> no. >> in role-playing, teachers focus on respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. >> a lot of people said

please. that's a great way to show respect. >> pitsfield launched its antibullying curriculum five years ago with federal government money. bullying incidents in pitsfield high schools and elementary schools are now below the national average. >> starts with an s, do you know the word? >> character development is part of the strategy. elementary school principal makes daily rounds for individual recognition. >> it's just like with education, with reading and mathematics education, the earlier we start, the better off we are. >> the feelings that show on our faces. >> this k through 12 curriculum challenges kids. >> why should i stand up to them? somebody else can do that. >> learning not to be a bystander. >> i make sure if i see disputes in the hallways or minor bullying, i make sure i put a stop to it. >> when i see something like that happening, i'll stick up to the person that maybe can't

stick up for themselves. >> both liam and josh plan to go on to college, but josh has enlisted with the marines first. traffic relief for drivers tonight in the sierra nevada. highway 50 through echo summit is back open and earlier than scheduled. construction crews closed the highway for more than a week to replace a roadside barrier that did not meet safety standards. planned to close 50 for two weeks, but the roadwork went faster than expected. it reopens the highway later this afternoon. >> it's nice to see that this was done actually in advance of the schedule and it's a pleasure to be up here. we have a safer highway. >> there's one way traffic on weekdays for now. the entire highway should be completely open by memorial day weekend. which is of course next weekend and play close attention to lawrence's forecast. >> that's right, could get

interesting as we head towards next weekend. outside right now, we have low clouds and fog moving in, trying to stretch in across the bay. still some breezy conditions in spots. winds over 20 miles per hour. yet today turned out to be a nice day. we had patchy fog, but otherwise lots of sunshine. the wind really the story today kicking up 30 plus miles per hour around the bay area. that's where we'll see over the next couple of days. tomorrow, a few clouds will be passing across your sky. temperatures not all that bad. 60s and 70s inland. partly cloudy skies. it's going to be the wind that will likely be the story as we head in toward the afternoon. temperatures right now cooling off. we have 52 degrees and breezy in san francisco. 56 in san jose. 57 degrees in fairfield and 55 degrees in concord. around the state, you'll find a lot of clouds with the sunshine out there as well. 70s and 80s in the central valley. a chance of a few showers in the high country, but doesn't look like a total washout. as it looks like a weak system sliding in toward the

coastline. the trough on the west coast, that's along that cool air and you can see this band of clouds that will be pushing on shore. we'll see partly cloudy skies and more wind. it will be gusty toward the coastline and through the mountain gaps. by tomorrow afternoon, some gusts will be around 50 miles per hour. 68, about 65 degrees in union city and about 67 in palo alto. our friends in the east bay will enjoy some sunshine and temperatures should be up in the 70s in many spots. lots of 60s as you get inside the bay. on the breeze si side in towards berkeley. the wind will blow in there, especially as they head to the afternoon. we are expecting cool temperatures out on the coastline, but as you move further and further, you'll see the temperatures running up a bill in the 60s and the 70s. so here we go. over the next couple days,

temperatures may cool into monday morning and it looks like as we head in toward tuesday, things start to warm up a little bit, but not by much. on wednesday, a lot of clouds. probably cool down the temperatures. going to stay partly cloudy on thursday into friday and look what we have next saturday. yup, there's a chance of showers. that's the holiday weekend. right now that's real iffy. hopefully that will disappear. right now there's no big dome of high pressure, so right now there's a chance we could see showers. >> thanks, get rid of them by tomorrow. iceland's most active volcano started erupting again. volcano wise under an uninhabited glacier, so no one is in the path of destruction. scientists have been expecting a new one. hopefully this will be large

some crew members on the shuttle endeavour -- these are live pictures from space. this is the international space station. crew members on the shuttle endeavor are getting ready for a space walk tonight. two astronauts will venture outside the international space station to do maintenance work. the six hour project begins just after 11:00 tonight. also nasa says a gash in endeavor's belly is not a safety concern. the pope made a long distance phone call into space. for 20 minutes he chatted with the crew of the space shuttle endeavor. pope benedict xvi said they

must have a different perspective. >> my courage as well as discipline and commitment that prepared yourselves for this mission. >> pope told commander mark kelly he hopes kelly's wife, congresswoman gabrielle giffords continues to get better. kelly thanked the pope for his kind words. the super computer that put two jeopardy champs to shame might be a big break flu the medical field. watson understands the meaning and context of human language. ibm hopes to utilize that to help sick people. the company is feeding watson information from medical books and journals that can help doctors get their patients diagnosed and treated faster and more accurately. possibly in the next couple years. well, it raised a ton of eyebrows, now princess beatrice's hat could raise a lot of money. the princess agreed to auction it off on ebay. so fart high bid is more than
