one wanted to hear. a second firefighter badly you're watching cbs5 eyewitness news on the cw. it was just too overwhelming. we couldn't bring him back. >> an announcement no one wanted to hear, a second firefighter badly injured in a house fire in san francisco has died. how tony valerio's family said he'd want to be remembered. summer is right around the corner but it's anything but outside, how the rainy weather affected weekend plans for people throughout the bay area. foiled by sweet snacks, a recipe for making bombs on terrorist websites are being replaced by cupcake recipes. good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. crashed into a home -- dama we begin with breaking news in san francisco tonight. a car has crashed into a home damaging a gas line. it happened about an hour ago

in the visitation valley district. don knapp is there with what happened. >> reporter: it's a pretty spectacular accident. we're at the corner of san bruno at the paul avenue exit. when you look across the street you'll see inside the garage a car that came down man sell we believe and when it did it hit the wall knocking off gas meters on the outside shutting off the gas for some period of time. three people were in the car being treated by paramedics but none of them apparently injured. so it looks like a poor parking job. no one living on that ground floor. no one is seriously injured, but it's quite a mess. it looks like they're putting things back together right now. a rather spectacular accident to look at, if nothing else. >> we'll take that. thank you, don knapp. two deaths in two days, tonight the san francisco fire department and firefighters across the bay area mourn the loss of their brothers. friends and family this morning

honor another fallen firefighter, tony valerio, the second firefighter to die from injuries suffered in a house fire two days ago. there was an emotional tribute to him. >> reporter: in the pouring rain surrounded by dozens of san francisco firefighters the chief made the announcement so many had feared. >> unfortunately this morning at about 7:40 firefighter paramedic tony valerio was pronounced deceased. >> reporter: the 53-year-old firefighter/paramedic had worked for the city 27 years, one of two firefighters who died after being overcome by a flashover of super heated gases while fighting a house fire in diamond heights thursday. valerio arrived at the hospital badly burned in cardiac arrest. >> this was a minute to minute struggle for his life from when he got hurt to when he died this morning, minute to minute, and we lost. it was just too overwhelming. we couldn't bring him back. >> reporter: doctors say it was

a blessing that valerio had 40 hours surrounded by his family before he died. >> i've had a lot of trouble in the last couple years sleeping. i can't even think about life without him right now. i don't know. it seems like he's still here. i can't really quite process that he is actually passed. >> reporter: valerio was the oldest of seven children his family calling the fire department his second family. they lined up to salute his body as it was wheeled into the medical examiner's van this morning. >> it is particularly difficult. you're mourning the loss of one and then to have another one very close from the same fire is challenging for us. it's painful for us, but we will be strong. >> i think he would want all of you to remember him as that happy person always telling jokes and just living life and that's what he did. >> he was very selfless.

he loved everybody. he loved life. >> reporter: in san francisco, cbs5. >> the cause of that fatal fire is still under investigation tonight. the family who lived in the home in diamond heights was allowed brief access inside today to retrieve some belongings. a woman and three children escaped the flames thursday running into the street yelling fire. neighbors are still stunned by everything that happened. >> all of a sudden there's this huge cloud of black smoke that came out and that was kind of scary. at that point i knew it was bigger and then we just watched the whole scene unfold. >> part of the street where the house burned is still blocked off. the area is considered a crime scene until the investigation is complete. perez and paramedic- firefighter we have learned there will be a joint funeral for lieutenant perez and paramedic firefighter valerio next friday at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco. we will post more information

at cbssf.com as we get it. people who live in the bay area are used to the soggy june gloom, but not record rainfall. don knapp shows us some events were canceled and an outdoor garden fair got more watering than expected. >> reporter: rain is good for plants and other living things, but it can be really bad for social gatherings like this planned art and museum event a year in the making. >> you can never predict the weather. it's a garden and we keep our smiles on, keep upbeat and it is what it is and actual ligatens are beautiful in the rain. -- actually gardens are beautiful in the rain. >> reporter: last year it was 80 degrees and people were looking for relief from the heat. this year they're making the best of a wet situation. at alameda's crown beach the annual sandcastle contest was rained out, but jasper hayward said the family reunion was on as i struggled with the tent. >> bringing my family out here to meet my family. so we're going to enjoy the

day. >> reporter: watching folks on rainy crown beach you'd think they were enjoying it. >> we don't melt. a little rain ain't going to bother nobody. >> reporter: but does sabrina like it here? >> not so much. i want to be inside. my mom said no. >> reporter: weather problems were a bit more troubling in sonoma county where wind brought down trees. a tree missed this home in pen grove but brought down a power line. another power line came down when this tree fell on her met in santa rosa. this porta-potty became airborne after winds lifted it from a pickup truck on 101 in santa rosa. the county fair was also a go in antioch, not that the pigs minded a mud, nor did mike redding in this barbecue competition. >> it doesn't affect it too much for the amateur barbecuer, rain or shine anyway. >> reporter: more rain than shine today, but the bad weather does seem to be bringing out the best in people

as they try to adapt. in oakland, don knapp, cbs5. >> the rain may have stopped in some places for now, but we're sitting in the pocket between two things right now. we've got our cold front that passed over and that low that's starting to work its way east into the region. right now it looks dry, but that is deceiving. we certainly have all that moisture making its way in. as we look here, we can see the santa cruz mountains seeing some precipitation right now, very scatter expected that is because the bulk of that moisture has moved on east and still he seeing a little bit of moisture ling -- still seeing a little bit of moisture lingering over just parts of santa rosa. the next few hours we'll see drier conditions, but by tomorrow it will be wet and possibly some thunderstorms. let's look at these record rainfall totals. we've got almost 1 1/2 inches in oakland, san jose a record breaking rainfall total, conditions all around for today wet and will continue to be

wet. i've got your seven-day forecast coming up and and we do see a chance of thunderstorms as well. well, bones have been found in a south bay park and they might be human. the bones were found by park rangers in a dry washout yesterday in canyon park in santa clara county. when investigators arrived, they kept finding more bones in the area. it is being treated as a crime scene and work is being done to determine whether the bones are, in fact, human. police are asking for help in finding the gunman responsible for a shooting in san jose last night. one man was killed, another injured. police say the two men were drinking beer in front of a house on birch lane when another man opened fire on them. it was san jose's 25th homicide of the year. early feedback indicates the majority of b.a.r.t. riders are willing to give up a few inches in seat widths to make the aisles bigger. they're also willing to give up

appear and no explanation was given. u.s. officials are trying to confirm the death of an al- qaeda militant believed to have -- to have been killed in a u.s. missile attack. ilyas kashmiri is believed to be one of nine militants killed yesterday near the afghanistan border. he was in line to succeed osama bin laden bin. the fax believed to be sent by the militant group, he was heading promised revenge against america. these cupcakes are not thought of as a recipe for terror, but some hackers for british intelligence replaced an al-qaeda file online to detailed how to make bombs with recipes for how to make cupcakes. curtis jackson shows us one of those recipes came from a bakery in ohio. >> no one wants to be associated in any capacity to have your name written in the same paragraph as the words al- qaeda. >> reporter: the owners of main

a new study shows the drug sold by pfizer called aromicin cuts the risk of developing breast cancer by more than half. for women past menopause the two drugs already available for preventing breast cancer have been unpopular because they can cause blood clots and uterine cancer. studies show aromicin did not have these side effects. well, part of a mystery solved that involves an e. coli outbreak in germany that killed a dozen and sickened hundreds of others. the focus now is where this all started. >> reporter: 12-year-old joe hans luca had to fight for his life after falling critically ill with the e. coli bug. german doctors put him on a dialysis machine when his kidneys failed. i feel better now he says, but when i sit up, i get dizzy. the world health organization says german investigators are

it will be dry enough for tomorrow. the ride raises money and awareness for hiv and aids services. en days along f the most scenic >> stigma is still a very important part of this disease and the broader community at large still needs to be educated about hiv and aids. so something like aids life cycle is a great way to build awareness and help people understand more about hiv aids 30 years later. >> the ride takes seven days along some of the most scenic roads in california. erica martinez back with a look at our full seven-day forecast. there's some dry days in there somewhere, right? >> yes. by the end of next workweek. we're having a dry pocket right now and as we look outside at the bay bridge, we really can't see the midlevel clouds, but we do have plenty of moisture in the upper levels of the atmosphere, really in the midlevel. we'll start to see the showers starting up later by tonight and we can see pockets of moisture headed towards the east. we do have this moisture that's headed for us right from the west. now all this low is picking up

this moisture from the pacific, going to drop it off by tomorrow and we do have those chances of thunderstorms. in the meantime let's look at what to expect tore tomorrow, temperatures trending -- for tomorrow, temperatures trending below average, mid-50s to the high 50s, but we do have possible thunderstorms tomorrow. that has to do with the low working its way into the region. we're currently in this pocket. we see all that moisture headed east. right behind it here's the center of that low. so we've got all that energy and pressure that's going to start to push on there. we'll start to see the pockets of possible thunderstorms as that cold air aloft starts to mix in with that warmer air at the surface. that's what could cause those thunderstorms by tomorrow afternoon. so right now it looks dry, but we do have some more showers on their way. here's a look at our temperatures for tomorrow, still trending below average, the highest risk we're seeing concord 69, 68 livermore, redwood city and san jose, 67.

things warm up by the end of the workweek, but we have quite a bit to contend. here's a look at our extended forecast. we can see the possible thunderstorms for tomorrow, temperatures just a little warmer by monday, not much. we'll see a slight chance of showers for the daytime hours as that low starts to head on east. we've got tuesday, wednesday and thursday looking a bit warmer there. finally reaching the mid- to high 70s by thursday and friday and saturday a little warmer, a break day, partly cloudy sky conditions, temperatures ranging from the 50s into the mid-high 70s and so we've got a ways. if we could just keep that saturday and sunday dry next week. >> we do have a new low that could be dipping down. it's unusual for this time of year, but we do have a lot of energy. well, thousands of people have been evacuated in southern chile because of a volcanic eruption. the volcano in the andes mountains about 500-mile south of santiago has sent a huge

plane, the airbus 320 captain sully sullenberger splash landed on the hudson river. >> the man knew what he was doing. he's a good pilot. >> reporter: the so-called miracle on the hudson captured the world's attention in january of 2009 and the unusual journey the flight 1549 is taking to its original destination will be turning heads the next several days. >> there's an airplane that landed on broad street. so we all ran outside. >> reporter: the fuselage is traveling 780 miles to charlotte, north carolina, squeezing under bridges and negotiating narrow tree lined streets. the trailer is custom made not only to accommodate the width and length of the plane, but to preserve the damage caused when it landed in the hudson. >> it's going to become frozen in time as it landed in the river. so we're not going to repair any damage that happened in the accident. >> reporter: shawn doors is president of carolina's aviation museum where the plane will have a permanent home. earlier this week some of flight 1549's passengers helped unload everything from

emergency exit doors to seat cushions. >> passengers have always had this debate it was a crash or landing? so kind of looks like a crash when you see all this stuff. >> reporter: the plane is expected to arrive in charlotte just in time for a reception with crew and passengers next saturday. the air like dorothy's house in oz. well, three inflatable bounce houses on a long island, new york soccer field were blown in there like dorothy's house in oz. the bounce houses were sent several feet airborne with the children inside. the incident happened during a soccer tournament at a school. 13 people were injured including some of the children. fortunately the injuries were minor. son to solo in a hot a 9-year-old boy is celebrating a history making flight. bobby bradley became the youngest person to solo in a hot air balloon. he enjoyed a half hour ride before making a perfect landing on a dirt road in new mexico. a small crowd of friends and family gathered to watch the historic flight.

because of his age bobby had to fly a smaller nonstandard sized hot air balloon. his parents are licensed pilots and trained him for the solo flight. >> very cool. extra time needed on the ice in game 2 of the stanley cup finals but not a lot of time, highlights from the canucks and bruins. the a's and red sox needed more time, how about 14 innings to decide a winner. the ump decided to call this guy, jonathan papelbon, you're out of there. sports is next. these sweet honey clustery things have fiber?
