you're watching cbs5 eyewitness news on the cw. a baby shot to death. his parents badly injured. how close police are getting to catching the gunman. paying tribute to fallen firefighters. the growing memorial outside a san francisco firehouse in mourning. >> gives me a whole new view on humanity. keeping their cause alive. 30 years after the first aids diagnosis, thousands of cyclists hit the road. i'm ann notarangelo. good evening. promising leads tonight in the case of a baby shot to death when his family came under attack by two gunmen. police say they hope to make an arrest soon. the family attacked in their car early this morning on wisteria drive in east palo alto. linda yee on how it went down. >> reporter: the car is riddled with bullets. the couple tried to drive to the hospital when police found

them on university avenue. they had just left a baby shower in an east palo alto neighborhood just before 1 a.m. when two suspects walked up and started shooting. a 3-month-old baby boy was shot in the head and killed. his 3-year-old brother escaped unharmed. their parents are hospitalized with serious injuries. >> the mother received a wound on her back side and we believe at this point she suffered that wound while using her body to shield her children from the gunfire. it is a very sad event and it hit my detectives very hard. >> reporter: some 40 officers are on the case including the county gang task force. investigators say the shooting was not random. >> this was not accidental, this was a target. >> reporter: extra officers are patrolling the neighborhood concerned there could be more violence. >> even though we are not in a position to say it is gang-

related we cannot rule it out. and if it is gang related or if it is some type of gang we have to expect retaliation. >> reporter: confiscating three weapons. they were not immediately considered suspects but they are being questioned about the shooting. police released sketches of the shooting suspects. both are describe as thin build, possibly in their 20s. members of different churches prayed in the neighborhood where the family was gunned down. the violence brought some to tears. >> i just heard it like half an hour ago. and i can't let go my child. it is really -- it is very sad. i feel for the mom and the father. >> reporter: police say violent crime here has come down in recent years. but the murder of a baby today

has shaken their community. in east palo alto,linda yee, cbs5. tributes continue to pour in tonight for two fallen san francisco firefighters. and the memorial at station 26 for the two veteran firefighters were working is also growing. don knapp is at station 26. >> reporter: pretty much like any that we have seen in the past where there has been a death in the family. people have been coming and going throughout the day. quiet conversations. even laughter at times as people try to come to grips with the idea that two family members are gone forever. san francisco firefighters from another station stopped by station 26 this evening to pay respects. inside the entryway the helmets and other gear of fallen firefighters vincent perez and

anthony valorio. >> we all mourn a loss of one. but when you have two, we just came to give our support an whatnot. >> a large note from a group says thank you for being our heros and for being so kind to our children. we are so sorry for your loss. one family's card tells about receive being help many times for a house foyer and medical aid for family members. thank you for protecting us. still another. thank you for all that you do. police and firefighters continue to control the scene of the thursday fire that killed lieutenant perez and critically injured firefighter valorio. fellow firefighters gathered in the rain outside san francisco general as the flag-draped body was taken away. back at the firehouse where both men served, they recall the last san francisco firefighter killed in 1995. >> this station has been a part

of the community for 15, 20 years and this is when they first built the station and now we have lost a total of three. you know. and it is har. >> those in the community who want to send notes to this firehouse are asked to write to station 2680 digby street, san francisco, 94131. ann? >> don knapp in san francisco. thank you. and the funerals for lieutenant perez and paramedic firefighter valorio will be held in san francisco. the time not yet announced. we will post more information at cbssf.com as we get it. well, the man who attacked and robbed an elderly woman in santa clara county is still on the loose tonight. it happened yesterday at a home on porter lane north of san jose. authorities say the suspect posed as a pest control worker to get into the house. he then attacked the 73-year- old woman and stole jewelry. the woman was beaten severely

but her injuries are not life threatening. 30 years ago today the government releasedded a report about a rare pneumonia that was striking gay men. june 5th is now considered the official anniversary of the aids epidemic and it is a fitting date for the 10th annual aids life cycle ride from san francisco to los angeles. john ramos reports they marked the anniversary this morning before setting off on the ride. >> hiv has transformed all of our lives. we have lost so much. >> reporter: the opening ceremony of the 10th aids life cycle began with a riderless bike representing those who have died. >> the people we have lost. the people who are gone today. >> reporter: but the life cycle isn't about death, it is about hope and raising awareness and it is the single largest fund- raiser for aids research in the world. >> you have broken all fund-

raising records raising how much? >> $13 million. [ cheers and applause >> dhani jones did his part. for his ride from san francisco to los angeles jones raised more than $18,000 by asking people on the internet to send him just one dollar each. he says it is a huge responsibility. >> i will ride no matter what. if i have to drag myself into l.a. i will be there because of all the support i have gotten. >> reporter: as their journeys begin the riders know they face a grueling week long 600-mile test of endurance but it is that common struggle that brings everyone closer together. >> this is awesome. it is like the world should be but it is not so you come back every year just to experience it. >> it is fantastic. nothing like it. >> immediately after i finished last year i called my sister and i said you have to do this

next year. >> we are just tired of seeing people getting hiv. dhani jones says this experience has raisedded his awareness as well. >> it gives me a whole new view on humanity. people donating and caring so much. i never knew. >> reporter: aids is 30 years old but much has been learned and there are whispers now about the possibility of a cure on the horizon. but these riders accept that there is still work to be done. and a long road ahead. john ramos, cbs5. >> since the the first report in 1981 the hiv aids epidemic has changed dramatically. it is no longer a death sentence. it is considered a chronic condition. it is virtually undetectable in the blood. right now more than a million americans and 33 million people worldwide are living with hiv. as of 2008 the latest stats available nearly 600,000 people in the united states have died

of aids since it all began. people out of work are still struggling to find jobs. the u.s. jobless rate inched back up in may. unemployment rate rising to 9.1%. the struggle is even more difficult for the long-term unemployed. now, those are people out of work for more than 27 weeks. the longer they are out of work the more trouble they have finding work. ben tracy explains. >> reporter: far too much time on his hands. when we met the former truck driver he had been out of work for two years. >> i talked to so many people. i'm not ashamed or anything. i'm homeless. >> reporter: his day job is looking for work at this jobless center in hollywood. >> how are you doing? >> reporter: he has plenty of company including fabbian. >> they are saying there are more jobs. i just wonder where the jobs are. >> reporter: 6.2 million americans. 45% of all unemployed workers in this country have been jobless for more than six

months. a higher percentage than during the great depression. >> restaurants. >> reporter: the bigger the gap on someone's resume the more questions employers have. >> they think, there must be something really wrong with them because they haven't gotten a job six months, a year. two years. but that's not necessarily the case. >> reporter: the problem, of course, is the economy. but some industries especially certain manufacturing jobs are not ever expected to come back. experts say unemployed workers need to be prepared to change careers. >> that person has to realize that they have to discovery what field they want to work in and become trained and move into that field. >> reporter: 1 million have now run out of unemployment benefits. >> if you have been unemployed for six months or more it takes a much dealer toll not just on your personal finances and your career prospects but on your

emotional well being. >> reporter: not giving up on his search though. >> i am taking everything one day at a time. eventually i want to find something. >> reporter: a job that will take more of his time and take him off the streets. ben tracy, cbs news, los angeles. nearly two dozen people dead, thousands more sick including children. ground zero for an e. coli outbreak and what people ate that made them sick. and it kills an average of one person every hour in this country. medical melanoma. reports of scattered thunderstorms in the far east bay. but we do have dryer weather coming up. i have my pinpoint forecast coming up after this.

health experts say is the source of a deadly e-coli outbreak in germany. at least 22 bean spouts from an organic farm is the source of a deadly e. coli outbreak in germany. health officials say five different kind of sprouts from the farm located between the cities of hamburg and hanover could be traced to the outbreak. the farm has been shut down. all of its produce recalled. people in five german states were infected. four americans also got sick. consumers don't seem too concerned about warnings of a possible link between cell phone use and brain cancer. a report by an international group last week classified cell phones as possibly

carcinogenic. many people say the warning is too vague. google searches for cancer and cell phones have spiked. major development tonight in the fight against skin cancer. as cynthia bowers tells us doctors are very encouraged showing improvement in some cancer patients in just days. >> reporter: they say the effectiveness against melanoma is cause for celebration. >> sometimes within 72 hours are already much better. off of pain medicine. maybe off oxygen. >> reporter: until now with the survival rate of just 15%, a diagnosis of advanced melanom amounted to a death sentence. unlike chemo which attacks healthy and unhealthy cells this drugs works by targeting a

genetic mutation which may help the disease grow. this mutation is present in half of all melanoma patients. susan steele is living with stage iv melanoma. within a week of starting this drug last january her tumor shrunk by more than 40%. >> i had a tumor the size of a football in my left flank that now was the size of my palm. >> reporter: melanoma kills one american an hour. fastest growing cancer in young people. tragically it is basically preventible. >> when it comes to melanoma prevention and early detection saves lives. this drug slows the progress and buys time. it is exprotected to be approved and on the market by the end of in year. not quick enough for patients

though. cynthia bowers, cbs news, chicago. a good reminder that if we ever see the sun again to wear the sun screen. erika? >> we will at some point. not tonight and not tomorrow. conditions pretty moist. looking at doppler radar. we will see a lot of activity, a lot of action going on in the central valley. a lot of thunderstorms reported. lightening as well. we also see some showers over the santa cruz mountains. pushing all the moisture, all that activity. so we will still see those showers from tonight through tomorrow and cooler temperatures on tap unfortunately but warming up by the end of the week. here is a really good look at this low as it starts to wrap around. here is the center of the low. just off the coast. we can see those thunderstorms popping on through here and all those cold high clouds.

temperatures still trending below average. we have got mid-50s to the high 50s in the coast, bay low 60s to the mid-60s and inland warmer conditions slightly warmer reaching and maxing out in the low 70s. but as we move on in we can see there is some good news on the horizon. we have got that low working its way out of the region but we do have dryer weather on the way as this high pressure ridge just starts to build ever so slightly building by tuesday and lingering possibly through sunday. so that's going to mean dryer conditions and temperatures just a bit warmer considering that we are already in june. now for tomorrow santa rosa, 65. napa 69. concord and fairfield 68. 65 for fremont. temperatures still a little cool but again here is a look at our seven-day forecast. it will get a lot warmer and certainly a lot lovelier. warmer temperatures starting on tuesday. we have got 70s, partly cloudy sky conditions. mostly clear sky conditions so

the comicbook opened with a solid $56 million. it is good but much less than the previous four xmen movies. last weekend's top movie "the hangover ii" fell to second place. kung fu panda ii, pirates of the caribbeans and brides maids. ford pintos. remember those? the car just celebrated its 40th birthday but they are no longer in production. owners who wanted to show their pinto pride drove their hatchbacks from all across the country to participate in the pinto parade. the event raised money for the wounded warrior project which provides services to injured service members as they transition to civilian life. she is becoming an international super star in the art world and it only took her about four years but that is only part of the surprise. introducing us to the

australian artist who caused quite a stir at other new york opening gallery this weekend. >> reporter: the kind of art you would expect to see at a manhattan gallery. >> she is an abstract expressionist. >> reporter: escape from the cosmic zoo. hints about the artist's identity. a little heart. a pink pony. hand prints. she is 4.5 years old. >> how does it make you feel when you paint? >> very special. >> the young australian is already a veteran in the art world. at age 2 she had a body of work and now she has her first solo exhibition in the united states. >> what are your favorite colors? >> blue, yellow, green. >> reporter: the gallery director was impressed by the

art,the imagination and use of color before she learned her age. >> i think that she is good and not just good for a 4.5-year- old. >> reporter: but the high quality of the pieces has led to skeptisism from some who question whether the paintings are truly the child's. her father says they are authentic and he videotaped her working on the pieces. >> i welcome them to watch hundreds of hours of video that we have got. i can give them uncut footage of her painting from start to finish. >> reporter: even before the exhibit opened four of the paintings sold. each cost around $5000. >> i think it is interesting. i think it is beyond her years for sure. >> reporter: aleeda doesn't seem too concerned with reviews or expectations. >> what do you want to be when you grow up? >> a caterpillar. >> and if she can do that,
