continental airline operations, it's still a mess. don knapp is at sfo where passengers who's flights were canceled last night spent most of today trying to get out. don. >> reporter: five hours as you say without those computers stranded thousands of people all over the world, but 24 hours after those computers were supposedly fixed, there are still folks here at sfo trying to get on airplanes. after 27 hours of trying to get on a plane to rome, john was finally heading for the gate at sfo. >> my flight to frankfort got canceled, so i missed my connection in rome and so now i have been waiting here. i've had a bunch of different stand byes i missed. >> united airline computer problem was fixed after five hours. the nightmare for stranded passengers lingers on. robin, her three kids, and a young friend were at wit's end. >> we stand in line for ever. said we could fly from phoenix to boise, but we had to go down

to terminal one. when we got to terminal one, the flight from phoenix to boise is overbooked. >> the airline hasn't been much help. >> the computers crashed and they just threw their hands up. didn't know when they would be up. didn't know what they would do with all these people. >> united said it is working with passengers to rebook or provide refunds. with airlines flying fuller than ever, rebooking has been tough. misty has missed flights half way around the world. >> warsaw was late and then we went to frankfort. >> you're supposed to be in chicago? >> yes. >> how bad has it been? >> it hasn't been bad at all. i got lucky. >> lucky because she got rerouted to san francisco. bumped up to first class. it was almost as good for josh simmons. >> i got here a couple hours early, but still missed my flight. waiting in line after line. hopefully catch another one.

>> got to keep it up on this one. >> oh yeah, it's for work, so i'm getting paid. get paid by the hour right now. >> it wasn't so bad for united airlines because the computer crash came sometime after the busiest part of the day. of course that's no consolation for all the folks trying to get on airplanes. >> when might it be okay for these travelers to go to the airport and assume they are going to get on their designated flight? >> if you talk to officials, things are coming back up. if you talk to people, it's like gee, when am i going to get that flight? it's hard to say. thank you. take a look at this video from the east bay. not one, but two homes burning in pittsburgh. flames and smoke visible from more than a mile away. the home on valley drive where the fire started around 7:00 tonight is a total loss even though firefighters were there in minutes. the flames spread to the neighboring home as was cars. three people went to the hospital to be treated for

smoke inhalation. their conditions are unknown. damage is estimated at a quart million dollars. the cause of the fire believed to be accidental. san francisco police are looking for a hit-and-run who killed a pedestrian in the city's mission district. it happened around 10:30 this morning at mission and 18th street. the victim was an hispanic man in his 40s. the driver fled the scene in his car, described as a 1990s white minivan, possibly a chevy. no arrests yet. a driver being chased by east palo alto police flipped and killed her passenger. officers say the 25-year-old woman sped away when police tried to pull her over. she crashed near east bay shore. the passenger died and the driver sustained serious injuries. police say she will face a number of charges including homicide. >> oakland police haven't made any arrests in the fatal shooting over memorial day

weekend. how volunteers are taking matters into their own hands to help solve the case. >> it's the police can't solve a double murder, maybe they can. dozens of volunteers return to the sight of a deadly shooting in oakland. >> to declare a new beginning in the city of oakland. >> turned into a crime scene near 88th and international boulevard. all captured on this video by a film crew who happened to be there. you can hear the first shot. several other shots followed. la toya, a 28-year-old mother from union city and eric busch, a 29-year-old from san leandro were killed in the street. >> to find your child lay there on the street breathless. i couldn't do nothing about it. >> the sheer number of people with guns at the gathering made the investigation difficult. this man walked past the camera

nursing student is working with a class kids foundation to look for lai. it's been three weeks since the 26-year-old was last seen. volunteers plan to search the area again tomorrow. in san francisco, a woman is under arrest for protesting smart meters. an antismart meter group says amy o'hare was sitting on the hood of an energy truck today and refused to move. o'hare is believed to be the first san franciscoen arrested for protesting smart meters. tonight, fairfield police have someone in custody. he could be responsible for an earlier attack that injured an elderly man. he was there for the standoff that led to the arrest. >> reporter: his hands over his head, daniel garcia walked slowly out of his fairfield home and into police custody following a 7 1/2 hour standoff. >> after deployment of tear gas in the house, our suspect surrendered and was taken into custody peacefully. >> police say a possible

threat remained. bomb units standing by just in case. >> obviously wanted to make sure we're safe. >> police surrounded the quincy lane house around 1:00 p.m. to search a warrant after he detonated an explosive device under a parked car in may. a second explosive device was found at garcia's home thursday, but garcia was gone. police say he has a criminal history, but won't say if he was arrested for making bombs in the past. police are also looking into whether garcia set off a newspaper bomb that named a vacville man in march. neighbors though are not surprised by garcia's arrest. they describe him as strange, paranoid, they say he even shows up on neighbor's doorsteps naked. >> on christmas eve at like 3:00 a.m., he ran outside in the street and stopped right here and was screaming military chants. >> neighbors also say garcia

was aggressive, confronting people on the street. >> he crossed the street and got right in my face and says what are you looking at? i say nothing, nothing. >> did it scare you? >> enough that i said to my husband, let's just get home. >> those neighbors watched closely as the events unfolded, hoping it will put an end to the problems. >> well rock and roll giant, clarence clemens has died. clemens was a sax player for the e street band and one of the key influences for the past 40 years. he was known as the big man. for his size and talent. springsteen called the loss of his friend and mentor immeasurable. clemens died today after suffering a stroke in his florida home earlier this week. he was 69. this is an opportunity that i think has value. >> on opposite sides of the fence and the same side of the

friendly game president obama and speaker of the house john boehner hit the green today teeing off together in what's officially just a friendly game of golf. susan has more on their golf summit. >> the president's first put missed the mark. but the second time was a charm. just moments later, house speaker john boehner drained a short put of his own. the two teamed up to beat vice president joe biden and ohio governor john kasic in a friendly round of golf on saturday. >> this is an opportunity that i think has value beyond the game. >> and while it was all handshakes and back pats on the green, 18 holes wasn't enough time for the two leaders to tee up agreements on major issues. the state is set on capitol hill for a showdown over spending. congress needs to vote to raise the nation's debt limit by august or the country risks

defaulting on its loans. republicans insist they won't support an increase in the debt ceiling unless it is tied to $2 trillion in spending cuts. democrats are on board with slashing spending, but they are fighting back on how much is cut and where that money will come from. there's also been tension between the president and the speaker over libya. boehner said has the president is in violation of the war power act for not seeking congressional approval for action in libya and raised questions how long the u.s. can support air strikes. on the green, the speaker and president were headed in the same direction. something unlikely to last in the weeks ahead. susan for cbs news, washington. >> it's unfortunate that tim pawlenty couldn't make it here, but cut him some slack. he's having his foot surgically remove frd his mouth. oh no, don't worry. luckily for him, it's covered

under obama care. >> reggie brown impersonated president obama today. not all of his jokes went over well with the audience. brown delivered several racially tinged lines about obama. brown's mic was cut off and he was escorted from the stage. the rlc's president called the comedian's comments inappropriate. it may not be the brightest bulb, but the longest lasting. it has been shining continuously since 1901. that's right, 110 years. the globe hangs inside a city fire station. >> nobody knows why it keeps burning. we've had scientists from all over the country look at this lightbulb. >> the 60-watt bulb was used as a night light and it gives off just enough lym nation.

dads. thank you. well big doings in little italy this weekend. san francisco's north beach festival kicked off today. booths were set up. then offered art, live bands, food, and what it calls beverage gardens. this is the 57th annual north beach festival. it continues tomorrow. it has been years in the making, but today the san jose vietnam town. the outdoor mall is one of the largest in the world for the south bay's vietnamese population. the developer wanted it to be the row of east san jose. one city leader called the development long overdue. well a cause near and dear to the heart of cbs 5, getting a little attention today. the first annual grad walk raised money for our students rising above program. it provides college scholarships for low income
