cuts one is hosting its first show. this 4th of july celebration is a celebration of community. >> reporter: and the good feelinglingers as the final fireworks just went off. it's the first time the city of east palo alto has celebrated its own fireworks and they not only celebrated the 4th of july but a few other things important to the community. people gathered here at bell park near cesar chavez academy for a first, fireworks in east palo alto for the 4th of july and the 28th anniversary of the city. in the past, the only fireworks in east palo alto were illegal or worst, gunfire. >> this is a good start to make sure people understand that it's not safe to use illegal fireworks and to join this event so we can actually save lives as well as make sure people are

safe. >> reporter: palo alto is especially proud that private donors came up with the $18,000 to put on the free show. while other communities decided to let fireworks go this year because of budget woes. >> three years ago we had 16 homicides in this community. two years ago we had eight, last year we had four, and this year we've had two and we hope that's where it stays. we have a lot to celebrate and i think the turn around is time. . >> reporter: certainly something worth celebrating on the 4th of july weekend here in east palo alto. lots of folks happy this happy. thank you we have a complete list of shows happening all around the bay area on our website, bc cbs5.com.

this is crown beach in alameda where people caught rays, played games, had picnics. believe it or not today was not the hottest day we're going to see in this heat wave. erica martinez here to tell us when we can see another heat advisory. >> maybe tomorrow? >> yes. and continues are going to be warmer tomorrow than today all due to the high pressure that's working its way over the forecast region. what we can expect is hazardous weather including a heat advisory and a smog alert tomorrow from noon until 9 p.m. temperatures ranging from 85 to 100 to 107 degrees. we advise limited exercise and stay hydrated. as we look at the high pressure making its way into the region it will influence the entire forecast. we have a low working its way behind it which will cool things down by monday but we have very warm conditions to contend with for tomorrow. my full forecast coming up. in the meantime, back to you. the search is suspended

tonight for a sea plane that captain sized in richardson bay last night. today divers and police agency scoured the water for the aircraft but they couldn't find it. they called off the search this afternoon. they plan a search again tomorrow with the help of a sonar equipped vessel. sausalito police do not believe the plane is leaking oil. the plane ended up in the water after a failed takeoff about 7:30 last night. the plane gained speed on the water before getting a little altitude and then the coast guard says a wave hit it during takeoff and the front of the plane nosed into the water. nearby boaters rescued the 75-year-old pilot and a passenger. they are okay. agencies are investigating if pilot error may have contributed to the mishap. shooting in san fransisco tonight injured two people. it happened before 8:00 at ellis and jones street in the tenderloin district.

a man was shot several times in the upper body and his injuries are life threatening. a 78-year-old passerby was shot in the foot. he'll be okay. a suspect has been arrested and a gun has been recovered. checking other bay area headlines, a month after two san fransisco firefighters died in the line of duty investigators have ruled the fire was accidental, probably caused by an electrical short. vincent perez and anthony valerio died a month ago today while battling a fire in the diamond heights neighborhood. more tests are being conducted to find the exact source. another leaf blower van is in the works for the bay area city. the noise makers are asked to be silenced especially the gas powered ones. they argue they're too loud and aggravate respiratory conditions. it will cost jobs during a

battered economy. and sickness on the high seas plagues a cruise aboard the san fransisco based sea princess. in the past two months more than 350 cases of norovirus have been reported by passengers. more than 50 people got sick on an alaskan trip that left port two weeks ago. princess cruises says the outbreak was from a passenger who brought it aboard. authorities have rescued a captain of a boat of a flotilla trying to deliver supplies to gaza. >> reporter: a ship load of pro palestinian americans with a mission, carrying nothing but letters of a symbolic effort to break the israeli blockade of gaza. sailing in defiance of orders. this was a dare to the greek authorities who said the boat was in the allowed to leave. the idea, go as far out as they could get and see what happens. not far before the coast guard

with commandos intercepted the boat. the americans yelled their frustration. >> let us go to gaza! >> reporter: the israelis blockaded gaza after the tearist group hamas won elections. and they maintain tight control. they stormed one ship killing nine last year. this time politics was enough to have greece ban any boats leaving in a new flotilla. israel and greece do a half billion dollars in trade. they knew getting to gaza was a long shot but still prak sis to resist israeli soldiers who might have boarded their ship. they're determined that their boat and cause are going nowhere.

. a small plane that had wandered foo a restricted zone around the presidential retreat in maryland has been intercepted. the two seater plane was esorted to a nearby airport after it got too close to camp david where president obama and his family are spending the holiday weekend. authorities tried to contact the plane by radio but the pilot did not respond. after talking to the pilot they decided the plane accidentally flew into restricted air space. it is very likely tomorrow the fate of casey anthony will be in the hands of the jury. closing arguments in the trial begin first thing in the morning. karen brown is in florida with a preview of what's to come. >> reporter: casey anthony's defense attorneys have one last chance to explain to the jury why they didn't make good on their promises. in opening statements, they told the seven women and five men that anthony's 2-year-old daughter, caylee, accidentally drowned. but in 33 days of testimony,

never offered firm proof to support the claim. they also told the jury that anthony behaved badly when they are daughter was missing because she was sexually abused by her father. but he denied it. >> i said they needed to throw a hail mary and every time they seem to have attempted that they fumbled. >> reporter: still the burden of proof lies with the prosecution. they contend 25-year-old anthony suffocated her daughter. but offered only circumstantial evidence. no dna on caylee's body, no proof exactly of how she died. what they have going for them is anthony's erratic behavior in the weeks caylee was missing. her lies and partying. and the prosecution may have got one of its biggest breaks when the final witness's testimony suggested that casey anthony's mother lied on the stand to protect her. cindy anthony testified she had searched the family's computer for chloroform that the prosecution says was used to

kill caylee. but cindy anthony's boss testified she was at work when the chloroform search took place which puts the spot light back on her daughter. >> if the chloroform is an instrument of death then you have premedication. >> reporter: anthony never took the stand in her own defense and shortly her fate will be in the hands of the jury. karen brown, cbs news, orlando, florida. >> if she is found guilty of first degree murder she is guaranteed to spend hive in prison and could face -- life in prison and could face the death penalty. turn off all electronic devices, that's the announcement before a flight. can it interfere with the pilot's ability to fly a plane? how much beef to create the largest burger at the alameda county fair. oppressive heat and thousands are left with no way to cool off. the record temperatures in phoenix, and why few people had air conditioning. ♪

the last fire we're not recovered. >> that last fire torched 94 acres. so far the las alamos fire has blackened 11300 acres. but they plan to lift the evacuation order soon for the people who live in the town. each of the 3 million passengers heard the same thing we hear when we fly, please turn op your electronic devices. but can your cell phone cause a plane to crash? there is a link. >> 23 is going to be on this side of the aircraft. >> reporter: anyone who nice has heard this. >> your mobile phones and other electronic devices should be turned off. >> reporter: and anyone who flies has probably wondered is my cell phone my ibook my ipod a flight risk? the federal administration says yes. there's a chance of

electromagnetic interference. >> there's a very low probability that any single device would interfere with the navigation equipment. but because there is that potential the faa decided it is better to prohibit all these devices. >> reporter: how can something that big be undone by something like this? the data is limited and the evidence all anecdotal. in 2003 a plane crash in new zealand killed eight people. investigators said the pilots's operating cell phone might have caused eroanous navigations. there have been 10 reports of passenger electronics causing problems. >> we had that red flag pop up and then go down showing there's interference. >> reporter: a bigger problem, noncomplying passengers.

>> we get reports from flight attendants every day on just about every night. >> reporter: but technology might change all that. electronics maker air cell has installed its secure in-flight wireless system go-go in almost one out of three planes. in the last month of last year, 2 million passengers safely went on line up in the air. and foreign carriers like emirates air have secure systems for in-flight cell phone tuesday. but be careful what you wish for. all passengers on phones all the time? >> is an absolutely horrible idea. >> reporter: and no way to fly away from it all. bill whitaker, cbs news, torrance, california. how about this, the alameda county fair started the beginning of grilling season by grilling the biggest burger. they began getting it ready this morning. they were trying to break that guinness record of 590 pounds.

they expected it to take about 10 hours to cook, but when you're working with a burger this big it's an inexact science at best. >> we can say that we've cooked meat before and cooked burgers before and we can say all that type of stuff but have you cooked a 600 pound burger? no. >> finally cook, the guinness book officials were on hand for the weigh-in and it set a new record weighing in at 770 pounds. bites were sold for 99 cents with the proceeds going to the alameda food bank. people in arizona are feeling the heat. phoenix hit a record high 118 degrees today. a monsoon knocked out power to about 4,000 homes meaning those homes have no air conditioning. it's so hot in phoenix that county sheriff ordered thousands of bags of ice to the county's outdoor jails to keep cool. -- or keep the inmates cool.

erica martinez joining us. and it won't be that hot. >> we'll see triple digits and warm temperatures inland. we're not seeing much here, beautifully lit. we're seeing clear sky conditions for this evening. and then we'll see patchy fog work its way over the forecast region. moisture out there but not much to deal with at all as we take a look at our highs for today. very warm temperatures all around, but it's only getting warmer. 88 for santa rosa. 96 for concord and fairfield. livermore, 98 degrees all due to this high pressure ridge pushing into the region. it will hold steady. we'll see this low dipping down, cool things down by monday. and we'll get a couple of clouds making their way in for the forecast region. we're seeing this monsoonal flow working its way up from phoenix so cloud coverage there by monday into tuesday but not much there. i'm going to leave clear sky conditions inland, mostly clear for the bay and sun and clouds for the coast area. here is a look at what we can

expect for tomorrow. hazardous weather, heat advisory, smog alert, due to the fact that the temperatures are so warm. and that high pressure ridge is really containing, just capping off all that air so leaving it unhealthy as far as that air quality goes. the pollen report for trees, high, along with grasses, weeds and molds are low. there's something to contend with there. tomorrow the rain, definitely something to look at. low 70s to 106 degrees, hazardous weather inland. sunny skies and early morning fog and that will mix out once the sun comes out. 91 for mountainview. 102 for morgan hill, let's work our way into brentwood, 106. i did bump that up there. 105 for antioch, concord 101. richmond 82 along with berkeley. in nevada, 97 ahong with sonoma. napa 100. these conditions are above average. here is a look at our extended

forecast. we're going to trend warm for the next several days. cooling down just a bit into next weekend, but we have dangerously warm conditions for tomorrow and sunday. >> have to be careful. >> thank you very much. well, this 4th of july it's estimated americans will eat 15 million hot dogs, one dog for every two people. other facts from the u.s. census, they spent $200 million to import fireworks mostly from china. most patriotic memorabilia including u.s. flags are made in china. also, three u.s. presidents died on the 4th, adams, jefferson, and monroe. the estimated population this july 4th is 311.7 million, up from 2.5 million in 1776. it is said that -- some could argue it's a jump that could end all jump. witness the breaking of a world record by a man on roller

. it's a good news and bad news story for some bay area homeowners. property values in san mateo county have risen 1.2% in the past fiscal year and that means local agencies will receive $15 million more in tax revenue but the county tax assessor says the growth in assessors was driven in part by inflation. some 30,000 residential properties and more than 500 commercial properties requested and received tax breaks because of declining values. the university of california is considering yet another tuition like. u.c.'s president is asking a board of regents to approve a 9.6% increase to make up for a loss in state funding. if approved, the annual tuition would rise to about $12,000 each year. it would be the seventh tuition
