you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news on the cw. the deadliest incident to date for americans in afghanistan. a chopper with more than three dozen service members on board shot down. >> it had its reasons. downgrade u.s. credit. why it insists it made the right move. crosswalk crackdown. what's being done on busy city streets to prevent another hit- and-run tragedy. good evening. three months after killing osama bin laden, the navy seals are back in the news. this time it's a dark day. 22 seals are among 30 americans killed when their helicopter was shot down. elizabeth palmer explains how it happened. >> the helicopter came down southwest of coble. of the 30 americans aboard, 22 were members of the special operations navy seal team six.

the same unit that killed osama bin laden. the other eight were army and air force personnel. a civilian translator, seven afghan commandos and a special trained dog also died. the crash site has now been cordenned off, but the taliban claimed they shot down the shanuk early this morning. u.s. military sources say it was called in as backup by another unit which run into trouble. local witnesses report it was hit with a rocket propelled grenade, a popular weapon among the taliban because it is light and cheap although usually inaccurate. from camp david, president obama said their deaths are a reminder of the sacrifices our men and women make and their families. in afghanistan where roads are nonexistent, helicopter raids

are a key part of u.s. strategy. multiple times a night, they swoop in on groups of taliban fighters in the dark and kill them, especially in this sensitive area. but the raids are controversial. they killed afghan families and innocent civilians by mistake and dangerous for u.s. forces. today's death brings a total number of americans killed this year in afghanistan to 297. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, london. >> well new hope tonight for two graduates. behind bars for more than two years. iran's foreign minister is quoted as saying he hopes they will be released soon. the two men face ease pi nag charges for crossing into iron illegally in 2009. their trial ended sunday. iranian judges will announce their verdict soon.

a third hiker was released last year. defending its decision to downgrade the economy. jay dow on the reasons for the move which comes as americans worry about rising interest rates. >> credit agencies standard is standing by its decision to downgrade the u.s. credit rating. america went from a aaa to a aa plus rating, which means s and p considers the u.s. a riskier investment. last week the agency warned it was watching the u.s. economy and says it decided to issue the downgrade on the heels of the debate. congress and president barack obama agreed to more than $2 trillion in deficit cuts over a ten year period. wanted $4 trillion in cuts and more revenue. >> we're not at all confident that congress is ready to go

beyond what they agreed to this week. >> white house sources tell cbs news the administration disagrees with the agency's decision, saying it was hasty and based on wrong calculations. in a statement from the white house press office, acknowledges the need for change, saying we must do better to make clear our nation's will, capacity, and commitment to work together to tackle our major fiscal and economic challenges. candidates are challenging the president's economic policies. >> this is a first president in the history of the country who under his watch, we have seen a downgrade of united states credit. >> all eyes will be on the world marks as they reopened to see what kind of impact the new rating will have on the already shaky global economy. jay dow, cbs news. >> and today president obama called on democrats and republicans to work together to grow the economy and to get americans back to work. >> to help create the climate

to beat the light on market street. traffic pushed its way through a group of pedestrians after the light changed. three motorcycle officers stopped a truck and here, a truck parked in a crosswalk forces pedestrians to walk around it. some were crossing against the light. and this man nearly got himself hit by patrol car. the officer yelled at him, but he slipped into the crowd. >> the police commander of san francisco southern district says his district has more fatalities and more injuries related to traffic than any district in the city. he hopes this operation will change that and of course he says if it saves one life, it will all be worth it. >> don knapp, thank you so much. an a antioch mother is dead. they were innocent victims in the wrong place at the wrong time when a gun battle erupted. it was in the 88 00 block of b. street at 1:30 this morning. the woman had visited relatives and on their way to san francisco when they were shot.

the killing is oakland's 72nd homicide this year. checking some other bay area headlines, bingo operation at the american legion hall has been the target of thieves for the third time. a worker leaving the game thursday night was stabbed during a robbery attempt, but the two suspects didn't get any money. the same bingo game was robbed twice last year. detectives are reviewing video surveillance of the latest attack. a petty cab war is brewing on the san francisco waterfront. the cyclist who pedaled tourists tell the citizen, an out of town operation moved in without the proper permit. west coast petty cab was also accused of jumping the lines and over charging customers. the operation insists there is plenty of business for everyone. prices at the gas pump may fall even more soon. the price of crude dropped 9%. analysts say the bay area could see $3.50 a gallon by the end

officers earlier this week. japan marked a grim anniversary today on august 6, 1945. the u.s. dropped an atomic bomb on heroshima. today japan looked back on the attack while struggling to recover from a major nuclear meltdown in march. as a result as a second atomic bomb fell, japan promised never to make or possess nuclear weapons and today the prime minister says they must reduce their dependence on nuclear power. the country closes down its port. they are preparing for the on slot of what could be the most powerful typhoon to hit the country in years. the storm is expected to hit china this weekend with winds up to 100 miles per hour. officials are stepping up safety at a nuclear plant,

potentially in the storm's path. cristie is joining us now with a look at our weekend weather. it's kind of cool. >> it was cool out there keeping temperatures below average. the story we have seen. outside right now, we are clear in those inland spots. along those bay shores, we are going see that fog build in, in the overnight hours. so for tonight, your conditions are going to be in the 50s for the most part. mostly cloudy in those inland spots. same story for the bay and the fog building in. as it often does. for sunday, we'll see some sunshine. patchy fog to start your morning and making your way into the mid 80s in the warmest location. cooler than where we should be in the 90s. mostly cloudy to start and clearing to partly cloudy conditions in the afternoon. coastline, going to keep it cool. fog, and even some drizzle. you'll likely be kicking on the
