the stock market remains volatile so does the debate in washington on who's to blame. >> reporter: following america's credit downgrade, more bickering. democrats and republicans picking their targets. >> this is a tea party problem. >> this president has failed to lead. >> reporter: shots after a roller coaster week of economic news. congress raises the debt ceiling, thursday the dow plunges 500 points, friday a better than expected jobs reports, unemployment dips to 9.4% period and then friday night america's credit downgrade to double a plus for the first time ever. >> our mission has to be getting the economy going faster and creating more jobs. >> reporter: president obama has a jobs making to do list for lawmakers. pass a set of trade agreements

with south korea, columbia and panama that would create 70,000 new jobs, approve a highway transportation bills and move on a new tax credit encouraging companies to hire veterans, but recently congress is focused more on spending cuts than the work force and there's little sign of common ground with it growing louder. >> this is dysfunction in the system and a lot has to do with the failure of the united states. >> this is without question the tea party downgrade. >> one battle with congress president obama won't have to fight is choosing a successor for the secretary rumored to be leaving. he is staying through the 2012 election. it's likely the financial troubles will trickle down to an already battered bay area economy. we could all be hit with higher interest rates. how home buyers and sellers are

bracing for the worst. >> reporter: if they're feeling jittery about the economy, they're not showing it. potential home buyers didn't blink at the price of this home on the market for nearly wind and a half million dollars. >> we had a lot of people through, a hundred groups through. very active. >> reporter: the stock market free fall does give some buyers pause. >> it's a scary time to make a -- it's a 20, 30 year commitment. >> reporter: but on this one day there were at least four interestedded buyers. >> the time has come for me regardless of the current financial situation. >> right. >> so i have confidence in americans and i believe that we're going to pull together and, you know, sort out our current situation. >> reporter: in the three years since the sub prime mortgage disaster real estate has taken a hit but home buying was picking up again.

>> people are nervous. they're scared. and so there's this hesitation in the market, the buyers are more hesitant and asking more questions. >> reporter: another example, they're just buying smarter. >> we feel like it's time to buy, it is a difficult time to know which way things are going to go. >> reporter: it does help that interest rates remain low, however with a highest debt ceiling all that could change and then there's this, banks are not so generous. it's still tough to get a loan. well we are learning tonight a father of one of the navy s.e.a.l.s killed that chopper crash lives in san jose. kevin was among 30 americans who died when their helicopter was shot down early yesterday. the taliban is claiming responsibility. houston's father is now planning his son's funeral.

how the families of the others are remembering their heros. >> reporter: the pain from the deadly yesterday of american soldier many afghanistan is being felt back home. flags are flying in front of michael strange's if philadelphia house. his father says the 25 year old loved his country, the service and especially being a member of the elite navy s.e.a.l.s. >> he's intense, he's funny, he had that dry humor. >> this was his third tour in afghanistan. nebraska army national guard's man patrick had only been there two weeks. they were among 30 u.s. troops killed when their helicopter was shot down saturday in eastern afghanistan. u.s. military sources say this s.e.a.l.s were called in to help a team on the ground. the taliban claimed responsibility. aaron's ground mother called

him a proud father and good soldier. >> he was a good boy and he loved his country enough to put his life on the line. >> reporter: and friends of john brown remember him as a hero. >> i'm very proud of him. i'm proud to say that i'm a friend of his and i'm going to miss him. >> reporter: the soldier's bodies will be flown to delaware later this week where they will be met by their families, military and possibly the president. hopefully the release of the two uc berkeley graduates behind bars has been dashed tonight. this after iran's embarrass door rejected reports that he would be freed. the trial ended sunday. iran judges have not released a

verdict. a third person was released last year. the guessing game is almost over. he'll announce whether he'll run for major after weeks of urging by his supporters. he's been dropping hints lately that he will be a candidate. >> mayor's weekend of reflection on a decision on whether or not to run for mayor. >> let it be. >> reporter: he may have been enjoying the moment but wasn't about to spoil the suspense. some were at least open to candidacy. >> it would be nice to have him as an option. >> he's going -- i think he's washing his hands of it. i set out to do this, this, this, this and i did it and we'll say yeah you did it. >> reporter: talking with cbs 5 this weekend lee sound like a

candidate for a job he promised to take only on an interim basis. >> i've got friends that have been so supportive about what we've been doing. i've had to so many people calling i haven't been able to answer the phone. i've been working really hard. i've never worked to hard before but end of the day, the sacrifice is worth it. >> reporter: he is the presumed leader in a crowded field. had he has concerned. >> the thing i have a problem is i want to make sure he's his own man. he's changed his mind again about the future of our city. >> reporter: lee hasn't said he will run but he sounds like it. >> that's what resinates with people. they want to see city government doing the work we've done. i feel good about the things

we've done and i'll continue working hard to do it. >> lee will make an announcement about the mayor's race tomorrow morning at city hall. an announcement, department of elections, what does that mean. >> he's leaning towards a run. thank you much. well, officials were warned months about the risk of disaster. documents filed showed the risk management group all but predicted an incident. upkeep and emergency plan created an unacceptable risk of disaster. they called the safety program weak and talked about what executives had known or should have known. >> flames started shortly after 4:30. it was driven in part by the

wind. firefighters are three different stations were called because homes were threatened. flames burnt uphill right up to the fire break and stopped. no one was hurt and it's not clear what started the fire. firefighters in southern california still working to surround a wild fire. 50 drivers were briefly trapped when flames jumped the free way. everyone was establish courted out safely. they have a line around half of the fire. it was expected to be fully contained by tonight but that hasn't happened yet because -- the cause of the fire is not yet known. >> the safety problems with jetta and mustangs. >> what turned a peaceful gathering to remember a neighbor into a night of terror. >> not sitting around, a former

have leaking fuel lines. as many as 66,000 vehicles could be effected. no recalls have been announced at this time. just about everyone has seen the cabs along the waterfront, the bicycles with the seats in the back giving riders a view of the city, well, now a new company is accused of trying to pedal past the others. what's causing the fare fight. >> cabs along the waterfront, a tourist treat, but now a war is brewing. >> we have places where we're supposed to be and not allowed and they're going everywhere. >> an operator has moved in and the other companies say they aren't playing by the rules. >> you need to actually be issued a badge and green permit from the police department and a plate for the cab in order to operate legally. >> reporter: these companies

say they welcome the business, they say the more the better. they just want them to play by the rules and that means get a permit. >> they seem to not know the rules of the road very well. i'm concerned about safety, i'm concerned about what happeneds if someone gets injured on one of their cabs and how that reflects on us as a hole. >> reporter: they often hire foreign exchange students to overcharge tourists. a police department hearing last week had to be postponed because of a language barrier. >> we need to stop and pick up their documentation. >> reporter: do you have words with them on the road or not. >> no a lot of them don't speak english. >> reporter: get a permit and play by the rules of the road and it's fair game.

there's no back pedaling on this issue allowed. earlier tonight american endurance swimmer began her attempt to be the first-person to swim the florida straights without a shark cage. this is video after a previous training swim. she is 61 years old and wants to inspire others to live vigorously in their golden age. she spent much of today hydrating and eating to prepare for the swim. the trekis expectedd to take 60 hours. >> yeah, i wish it were beach whether but not quite seeing that weekend i. was warm in spots but plenty of crowd cover at the coastline. seeing clouds building right now. you can see those clouds surge inland over night and seeing

fog and drizzle as well. so clear tonight and then becoming mostly cloudy around the bay. patchy fog and at the coastline we'll see that drizzle. temperatures in the 50s for our overnight lowes. for tomorrow, sunshine in the picture, but still keeping the the temperatures cooler than they should be. then have a cloudy start around the bay shores but sunshine there as well. that drizzle, that fog, but then we will see some clearing. partly cloudy conditions for our afternoon. cloud cover is out there hugging the coastline and pushing into the interior valleys and we're going to cloud up overnight all over the bay area. we see a slight warming over the next few days. you may notice a degree or two but pretty similar conditions tomorrow as today. here's the high for tomorrow, 97 for redding, 92 is the high

in there. here's your highs for tomorrow. topping out at 80. 73 for union city. 77 in dublin but we will make it to 88 as one of our warmer locations. oakland making it to 78 tomorrow. sew sonoma will top out at 78 tomorrow. we'll start to see the temperatures warm up. so actually bumping numbers up to the low 90s at that point. maybe even hitting mid 90s and then we see a little bit of a cool down for the end of the work week. then we get a degree or two cooler into the weekend. only little bumps on this roller coaster. not significant change or any

weekend. the action thriller, "rise of the planet of the apes," about apes who evolve to take over the e top of the apes ruled the box office this weekend. the action thriller is about apes who evolve to take over the earth and human opened taking in $54 million. the smurf are in second place while cowboys and aliens are in third place after opening on top last week. the change-up and captain american rounded out the top five. >> the pinball machine has been a staple at bars for ages.
