good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. storm warnings for the east coast top have been called off and former hurricane irene headed into canada still packing 50-mile-an-hour winds but it has left a path of destruction. tonight the storm is blamed for 21 deaths across eight states. early damage estimates are topping $7 billion. 4.5 million people still have no power. the president warned the country that "this is not over." the evacuation order in new york city has been lifted but tomorrow's commute is expected to be chaotic. >> reporter: sheets of rain from irene triggered a flash flood 45 miles outside of albany. pushing a small boat into a bridge. a school bus pinned up against a tree. emergency crews were called in to pull people out of flooded

homes. the storm left a path of destruction more than 1000 miles long and millions could be without power for days. irene hit north carolina as a hurricane and churned up the coast spawning tornadoes. it is believed a twister ripped the roof off this delaware home. >> you heard the rumbling and you heard the crazy noise and i knew thing was wrong. >> reporter: the storm surged onto the shores of new jersey and long island with strong waves. irene's storm surge was so powerful it ripped this life guard tower off. people are bailing out the water in flooded homes. in new york city water rushed into the streets of lower manhattan flooding up and town the east coast and in some areas the water is still rising. >> i want people to understand that this is not over. >> reporter: the storm forced airlines to cancel some 10,000 flights but there is good news

for stranded travelers. most major airports had been bag open on monday. long beach, long island. as s.f. os, a total of 41 flights to the east coast were canceled today leaving passengers, thousands of them stranded. but despite the long wait some travelers aren't complaining. >> i think it is better to lay on the ground and sit on a bench than be in new york because i expect there is no electricity. >> according to airport officials no flights for tomorrow have been can he would. well, some of the worst storm damage is in north carolina where thousands of people remain stranded. karen brown is in north carolina with how the state plans to move forward. >> reporter: irene washed out the only road in or out of hattaras island. damage to highway 12 cut off more than 2000 people from the

mainland. they defied mandatory evacuation orders now emergency crews will use ferries to fete the stranded food and supplies. communities all along the outer banks are starting to clean up. in maneo they swept sunday sweeping water from their stores and checking out the damage. >> i lifted everything off the ground. >> reporter: irene pounded parts of north carolina with more than a foot of rain and caused a massive storm surge that caught many offguard as it quick hurricane turned streets into rivers. >> here we are 4 feet above the sidewalk. we got 2, 3 inches of water into our restaurant. >> reporter: this gift shop is just one of the many businesses washed out in the flooding and it all couldn't come at a worst time for the outer banks. right before the lucrative labor day weekend some they will be working around the clock in hopes the tourist will come back. governorr bev perdue toured the area. >> reporter: neighbors are

helping each other pick up the pieces. >> this is our hometown. can't let it be like this. >> reporter: the kestler family received help moving deb bring outside their home without even asking. >> very humane thing to do. >> reporter: they decided to ride out irene but won't take that chance next time around. cbs5 news, maneo, north carolina. the 129th rescue ring of the california national guard at moffet field this morning to head to new jersey. it was scrapped before it began. they were onboard with two helicopters when the call to deplane came 11:30 this morning. 20 other guardsmen were preparing to take the second flight. since the hurricane wasn't nearly as devastating as was thought it was going to be and

they weren't needed. >> in this case the situation with the hurricane dictated the cancellation of the mission. >> 40 members of the rescue ring did take off on a c17 yesterday and they are now on the east coast. over in sacramento red cross workers are getting ready to possible hurricane deploy hundreds of roll tears to the storm ravaged region. the capital region chapter managed to get three volunteers out there. other volunteers are waiting to be called upon. we will continue to watch the aftermath of irene and post the latest information and pictures as cbssf.com. . weary b.a.r.t. riders bracing for a demonstration tomorrow. demonstrators say they will try to impact the evening commute. it impacts more than people that use b.a.r.t. don knapp explains these week hurricane protests are taking a financial toll on muni. >> reporter: it is not only

b.a.r.t. down beneath survive's market street there is muni too. to when b.a.r.t. closes some stations temporarily as it says it expects to do, some muni riders can also exhect to be inconvenienced. the continuing protests stir mixed feelings from some. >> i'm an open source guy so i complete hurricane understand the idea behind it and the movement they are after. but i question the motive sometimes if it isn't more for publicity and their sake versus the actual issue. >> reporter: a protest this past week, the latest in a series over the b.a.r.t. police shooting of charles blair hill lasted into the night inconveniencing b.a.r.t. riders and saw dozens much protestors arrested by police. a police spokesperson revealed the spillover of inconvenience. >> as you all know muni traffic was affected. the railway system in san

francisco was really affected as well as traffic in motor vehicles along the street. >> reporter: the demonstrations are having a broad impact in both inconvenience and cost that reaches well beyond b.a.r.t. >> we have to bypass the station because we are not letting in or out passengers some we have to bypass the station. >> reporter: to get riders around trouble spots takes extra equipment and extra people. >> that was for $70,000 for the last protest. >> reporter: the last protest? >> correct. >> reporter: you've had cumulative ' causes. greater than 70. >> monday was 70,000. >> we don't know where they are going to go or what they are going to do so we have to adjust as we go. >> he declined to say whether muni will seek money from b.a.r.t. they will not reimburse san

francisco police saying policing protests is part of what police do. stepped up security tonight as the raiders took on the saints. the raiders promised increased security following last weekend's battle of the bay at candle stick. this was visible law enforcement there today but fans say what happened last weekend isn't typical at either stadium and security is adequate. >> we have problems from time to time but the response by the police. we have ushers in every section. we even have a system to where if there is a problem all you have to do is text and security will be there instantly. >> raiders fans also say that the so-called aggressive and violent behavior of the raider nation is exaggerated. they blame the violence on nonregulars and excessive alcohol. a much calmer night at candle stick. the new rules immediately after

last weekend. dozens of people were ejected from the stadium last weekend and two arrests for public intoxication. some are raising questions about alcohol consumption on cal-trans when fans head to the ballpark. in documents supplied to the examiner there have been 64 incidents of rowdiness or violence this year and just 18 arrests. it is the only agency that allows drinking in cars so it is band after 9 p.m. bay area headlines. san francisco battalion chief is recovering after her rescue vehicle was broadsided while responding to a call. her truck was hit by a pickup truck this morning. both drivers were sent to the hospital and they are expected to recover. the crash closed the 101 off- ramp in the area for about an

hour. fire damaged a children's center today. the fire broke out in a computer lab at children's council of san francisco on church street near mission high school about midnight. no injuries reported and no word yet what sparked the fire. firefighters in solano county have now contained a grass fire that broke out in fairfield. the so-called fire spread out of the city toward vacaville. at one point the eight-alarm fire threatened dozens of homes. by midnight firefighters contained 60% of the fire. they got full containment of the fire after it burned 618 acres. more than 4700 acres burned in yosemit. merced river canyon. a motor home fire. hundreds of firefighters are working this fire. it is 35% contained. full containment is still

and collided with a car on highway 29. investigators say the single- engine "beech a plane skidded and collided with a car on highway 29 in napa county. the single engine beach aircraft lost power, came down without its landing gear. two people in the car suffered minor injuries. people on the plane were not hurt. the aircraft was badly damaged. two sacramento county men are under arrest for shooting at two women who were delivering newspapers. police say anthony collins and richard anderson may have been prying to protect their pot crop that was growing behind anderson's home. they were delivering the sacramento bee. shots rang out from a neighbouring mobile home. the women quickly drove away

and the shots kept coming. the car was riddled with bullet holes. fortunately the women were not hurt. >> very fort. this vehicle was hit nine times. so considering they had the two occupants and person that delivers the paper they are very lucky not to be injured. >> police found six weapons, motion sensors and two dozen pot plants. the lawyers for two cal grads jailed in iran has filed an appeal. they each received eight year prison sentences. they were accused with illegally crossing the border from iran to iraq. a third hiker was released almost a year ago. four decades of immersioning humself in education a cal superintendent says he is financially secure

enough to take a more than $200,000 a year pay cut. fresno county superintendent larry powell currently makes $290,000 a year. now, with this new deal his salary will be slashed to $32,000. >> i will be doing the same job but i will be doing it for a few dollars less. >> the restructured deal is good through 2014 and allows powell to say how the extra funds will be used. he says the money could be spent on preschool programs or art programs or both which have been either cut or face the chopping lock. and while we are enjoying pleasant summer weather southern california is baking from a heat wave. today marked a second day with an excessive heat warning. but there may be some relief on the way. the forecast for temperatures is about 15 degrees cooler this week. meteorologist jim bernard joining us with a look at how

hot we will get this week. >> won't head to the triple digits where we see lots of heat in the central valley. let's check in though, take a last look at hurricane irene or tropical storm irene now. this has been the main story all weekend. here you see irene moving off through maine as it continues to weaken and here is what continued to happen but didn't and tropical storm jose is off the hick as well. following on the heels of irene. this one will stay offshore. low clouds and fog in the bay settling in across the region this evening. it will be there first thing in the morning. temperatures today enjoyed a nice clearing trend as we saw mid to low 90s across the interior. and mid to upper 60s on the peninsula. even the beach got sunshine today for a change. we will see his of that sunshine through the week as we see more dense fog patterns

developing. supposed to be some clearing tomorrow. a slight cool. a couple degrees for most locations. nothing dramatic. just a subtle cooling trend which will continue through the weekend. fog thickens up along the shoreline. cooler air mass headed our way out of the gulf of alaska. low pressure will set off once again off the coast and tends to make for a rather stubborn fog pattern which tends to linger around the precido and beach. clears back at van es and that's about it. cooling trend through mid-week as once again come the end of next weekend we should see mixing in that fog bank and a little warm up. into the weekend for all the weekend activities for the hong weekend holiday midday sunshine for most locations even back at the beach with temperatures in the low 90s for our hot spots and cooling slightly as you

move back to the bay. mid-70s to low 70s. that cooling trend i mentioned settles in for the week and hangs in this until thursday or friday. friday we will start to see a hill more mixing in that fog bank and resulting warmup should carry us through the hong weekend here. so it looks like a lovely pattern taking shape as the summer continues on the west coast and on the east they had been cleaning up from lots of rain and wind and our heat wave here will be confined to central valley where they will continue to see triple digit readings tomorrow as they have all weekend. >> lucky so far. >> cooler than normal. normal pattern continues and nobody here complained. >> thank you much. >> all right. well, soon you'll find more fashions and food at hillsdale shopping center. this fall for every 21 h &m and cheese cake factory are opening

and "our idiot brother." earnings down this weekend because of hurricane irene. gas prices could soon be dropping. a new survey shows gas prices have remained steady over the past two weeks. a gallon of regular just under $3.61. but industry analysts say with irene grounding flights and keeping people at home there has been less demand for gas. stum not clear how much prices could drop. it was a big night at the m. t.v. music awards. ♪[ music ] >> beyonce announcing her pregnancy with rapper jay-z outside los angeles' nokia theater. britney spears got an award. spears took the stage.

thanks, dennis that does it for eyewitness news giants slide in the national league west started tonight. start the clock please. striking out 10 giants. look at this sparkling play. that is a beauty to get carlos beltran scoreless game in the 1st inning between the giants. matt cain pitched eight innings. allowed just two runs but the giants were tied with houston in the 10th and jason michaels puts one into the gap. astros lead 3-2 and they fought back. mike deerosa is called out. he was upset and for good reason. bruce bochy comes in. he gets thrown out and the game stayed time. that was huge because in the 121 former giant. gives houston a 4-2 lead. so the astros win that game. they earn a split with the
