crime spree that included a gas station shooting >> good evening. the number dead from that crash at the air races has gone up. reno police say 9 people died when that world war ii era plane crashed at the national cramp i don't know ship air races. 7 people killed on impact. two others died at the hospital. 54 people were treated at the hospital. 24 have been allowed to go home. it is still unclear what caused the plane to slam into a crowded tarmac. joe is at the reno airport. >> reporter: spent the last day and a half going through the wreckage and they say they have recovered a key piece of evidence. part of the tail of the plane that crashed >> i just couldn't believe my

eyes. >> reporter: brad was taking photos watching as a vintage plane began to climb. suddenly made a strange sound, plummeted to the ground and broke into a million pieces. ripped through the bodies in the vip section >> i saw so much material go flying up in the air, i was stunned. >> reporter: witnesses are calling jimmy a hero for ditching his plane on the tarmac. thousands more people could have been directly hit >> i think that pilot in the last two seconds pulled back because he saw the bleachers and i would guess he saved 2 to 300 other people. >> reporter: what went wrong? people are on the scene trying to find out. video and photographs are going to help their effort including photos of

a broken piece of the plane's tail >> a component has been recovered in the area where that was reserved. we have not identified the component. it will be examined. so we don't know what the component is or if it came from this particular aircraft. >> reporter: the broken tail could have impacted the plane in flight >> especially if it didn't come completely off it's going to change the attitude. it would be like turning your steering wheel sharp on the freeway. >> reporter: the pilot said it took him five years to modify the plane making adjustments to the wings >> we cut 10 feet off the wings. five feet off each side. versus about 60 inches. do it right to the total airplane in the wind and different

circumstances and anything happens, you need jet speeds. >> reporter: they've been holding this event since 1964 and through that time period, 22 people have lost their lives. this is the first time spectators were killed >> you are looking at a video, is the race taking place over the spectators, are the planes directly overhead? >> reporter: they are directly overhead and they are flying close to the ground and close to each other as well. but they are on the tarmac so for the most part, they are not endangering the people in the stands. but the pilot was able to ditch right in front of the stands but ended up with several deaths. 9 so far and expecting that count to rise >> oh, no. joe at the reno airport. thank you. friends and family members are calling the pilot who died a

skilled airman and stunt pilot. he had been racing since 1975. also served as a stunt pilot for hollywood movies. friends believe it was not pilot error that caused the crash. he is survived by his wife and two adult sons. the future of the event is unsure. people are asking organizers to cancel future races because of the accident. 20 pilots have been killed since this began 47 years ago. but this is the first time spectators have been killed. if the race continue they will reexamine whether schoolchildren should be taken on field trips to the races. less than 24 hours after the reno crash, another pilot in west virginia died when his plane crashed and burst into flames. officials say the pilot was flying a world war ii plane.

they say he lost control during a 6 plane formation and crashed at the airfield. volunteers are searching for michelle lee today. the body was found today. this was the 8th time volunteers have searched in the canyon since michelle disappeared in may. they searched that area because the last signals from her cell phone were in this area. the body was badly decomposed and unidentifiable >> those things are always difficult because weather plays a part in animals and all these different things are factors in that. has not been here a long long time. but hasn't been here a short short time either >> officials say it will take

several weeks to identify the body. san jose police is looking for a man that ended with a death of a woman who had been car jacked. the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: that's right. today police had an unusual saturday news conference to talk about a suspect still on the run and encouraged the public to call in tips and offer a cash incentive >> the city has a $10,000 reward for the information leading to the arrest and conviction of mr. ca sti llo >> the reward is offered. left a victim with a gun shot wound and the body of a woman in a san jose home. police suspect 33-year-old paul

shots rang out in san francisco's north beach entertainment district. anne bars and strip clubs have just closed for the night when shots rained out. on the shooting by police officers injured innocent by standers >> two innocent people were shot at 2:00 this morning in san francisco's north beach. it started as police were trying to catch a man on foot. they say he pulled out a gun. the police started shooting at him but they missed. a man and woman in their 20s were hit >> these people were complete by standers that were not involved with the incident >> we did speak with two woman who were eating pizza nearby >> everyone came outside and were like it's a gun shot

>> they say there was a lot of confusion and some say it looked like an officer had been shot >> one cop on the ground surrounding him and eventually got up and stumbled off >> police only confirm there were injures to the by standers and everyone is going to live. officers are on paid leave as the investigation into what happened continues >> we want to make sure we do the analysis both quickly and thoroughly before we offer what we think was activity that occurred in the injury of pedestrians >> we are responsible for every round that is discharged of course. and an option in motion stays in motion until making contact with something. unfortunately in this case there were two by standers >> cb s 5 >> each of the two by standers were hit in one of their legs.

they were treated and released. the suspect is in jail. there could be scary times ahead for some people who don't buy their halloween pumpkins soon. irene destroyed patches across the northeast. that will force prices to double. irene isn't the only thing causing the shortage. farmers say bad weather set back the fall harvest. people could pay $15 per pumpkin. volunteers across the bay area pitched in this morning to help out in the coastal clean up day. thousands of pounds of trash from the coast and local waterways. special attention went to river park in san jose. among the trash collected, thousands of pounds of plastic bags, food

wrappers, cigarette filters. 82000 workers picked up 1 .2 million pounds of trash during the clean up. beautiful day to pick up all that trash >> they did. lots of sunshine. even at the coast. we'll see more sun tomorrow. very patchy fog showing up tonight around the bay location as we take a look at the golden gate camera right now. there's not much fog out there. pretty good visibility and we'll expect skies to stay mostly clear here through the evening a little patchy fog likely but won't amount to much. we saw temperatures today in the upper 70s and mid 80s across the area. and into the low 70s here. mid 60s at the coast. look for a bit of warmup tomorrow across the region as clear skies this evening leave us with temperatures to the mid and upper 50s.

starting to get into the upper 30s so we're definitely seeing the seasonal change here as things are chilling out in the mountains. look for that warmup to prevail. low 70s in downtown san francisco. 10 degrees warmer in san jose. bit of an off shore flow sets up which means warmer temperatures ahead here across the bay area and northern california for that matter. mostly sunny skies to prevail. temperatures in the mid to low 90s across the valley. back to the bay as mentioned we'll be warming into the upper 80s tomorrow headed for the low 90s by early next week. and as you can see few low clouds at the coast but very patchy. temperatures for the warmer locations into the mid 80s. 90 down around morgan hill. we can expect those 70s to low 80s for

most locations. even at the beach. and over in the east bay and warmer locations upper 80s low 90s for tomorrow. early part of the week here for the north bay also warms. looks like it will be with us pretty much for the whole week. we're not expecting any triple digit readings but on the warm side here. 90s before temperatures cool down again come next weekend as a chance of showers creeps at us from the showers. fall starts on friday but may stay the summer season >> look at that. fall starts with some rain >> it's a possibility. right on time for this time of year >> you were mentioning earlier something about a la nina. is that what's going to happen?

headed for another recession or is already in one. 86% say the economy is bad or very bad. and just 12% think the economy is improving. president obama is trying to gain support for his proposal to boost jobs and consumer spending. it's an uphill battle. >> reporter: to sell america on his plan for the economy, obama will need support from democrats >> he hasn't done much since he's been in office. >> reporter: a former obama active visit, he has little faith in the president's new job's bill >> i think it's a bad bill. it doesn't produce the kind of jobs we need. >> reporter: in a recent poll, 47% of americans say they are not confident the american jobs act will put people back to work. still president obama is crisscrossing the country.
