natural gas pipeline bursts during safety tests. what te utility says may have co a five foot crater left behind when a pg and e pipe line burst during a safety test. pg and e says it might have contributed. reports of a brutal attack on a nurse by a patient in a bay area hospital. the eyewitness accounts from fellow nurses. they're protesting against the large sums of money made by big business. now a way to capitalize on the movement. good evening. we're learning more tonight about that natural gas pipeline that burst on the peninsula late this afternoon. the pipe burst during pressure testing to check the integrity of the line. mark sayer with investigators and what believed contributed

to the rupture. >> reporter: the rupture sent mud cascades on highway 280. forcing the closure of several lanes. pg and e crews were at the sight of the rupture, trying to figure out what was wrong with the line. >> we're investigating the possibility of third party damage at this rupture location. >> reporter: pg and e has been undertaking a massive program, putting 150 miles of line through what is called hydro static pressure testing. the lines are pressurized with water. in most cases, past their maximum operated pressure. during one test near bakersfield, a line opened up a big hole in an alfalfa field. the purpose is to identify weaknesses in our lines, such as this one. >> line number 132, which is the same line that ruptured last year in san bruno. the utility remains confident,

it will be able to supply enough natural gas during the cold winter months. >> we want to make sure that we don't have any lines out of service as winter approaches, and cold weather approaches. so this is one of the final tests we're going to do in the bay area this year. >> reporter: once this rupture is repaired, pg and e says it will undergo another test, before it is cleared to be put back in service. pg and e has been conducting the pipeline pressure tests for several days. last week, it discovered a pin hole leak in palo alto. how the test uncovers potential problems. >> reporter: we know the pipe can hold water pressure at this level. >> in palo alto, crews have been looking for gas leaks and found one in the same pipe lain

that cause the san bruno blast. >> we started this test on thursday. the pressure began to crop very slowly. >> the point of these pressure tests is to identify weaknesses in the pipes. >> reporter: a routine check turned up a weakness in the form of a 1 millimeter hole. >> we first have to get the water out of the pipe. the next step is to fill it with helium and air. >> reporter: this goes from place to place, wherever they're testing the pipe. among the four mile stretches of road, they're going to be using these devices to detect helium. if they find any, that's where they dig, and that's where they repair. >> we want to raise them up to normal levels before the

winter. >> reporter: preparing for a long winter in the bay, four miles at a time. in palo alto, patrick sadillo, cbs 5. concerns about hospital safety after a nurse was assaulted by a patient. hospital workers were shaken by the attack. >> reporter: leslie is emotional as she describes a patient's attack on a fellow nurse. >> he pinned her on the bed and choked her and repeatedly hit her in the back of the head. >> reporter: a practitioner says he was nearby. >> i heard some screaming. the screaming got louder. i went to the room. i observed the patient jumping back into bed after he had choked and hit a nurse. >> reporter: he says he tried to comfort the victim. >> she was shaking.

she was screaming. wanted to make sure that she was safe, so grabbed her and held her. >> reporter: the unnamed nurse is bruised, but recovering. the safety and well-being of the nurses is of utmost importance. adding, our security department and our employees are trained for immediate and appropriate response to any unusual event. the attack comes as nurses and the hospital are in contract negotiations, and as nurses and other workers discuss new safety issues. about 6 weeks ago, during a brief strike, a patient died after replacement nurses mistakenly administered a fatal dose of medication. >> their implementation is nonexistent. >> reporter: for now, she says she relies on her own safety measures. >> that's why i have this whistle around my neck. i'm afraid. they've broken into my car.

>> reporter: the hospital says any unexpected event is investigated thoroughly. an investigation in this case is already underway. five people are dead, and a sixth person is in critical condition. someone driving by on highway 101 made the first 911 call. two caregivers told them about the six people trapped inside. >> when they arrive on scene, obviously, the first thing is a rescue. that's the first mode you go into. so they began the rescue. pulled some folks out. >> the conditions soon became too dangerous for rescue workers to continue their efforts. the victims all lived at the house. the investigators are looking for the cause of the fire. a street race ends in a crash that killed a 17-year-old boy. police say two cars were

speeding down richmond parkway at 1:00 a.m. this morning. the cars clipped each other, and spun out of control. the bmw flipped several times and hit a pole. killing the driver. two passengers were taken to the hospital. police arrested the driver of the other car who apparently caused the crash. he faces manslaughter and potential dui charges. occupy wall street demonstrators in southern california move their protest to the local police station after police evicted them from their camp ground. riverside police arrested 11 protesters who refused to move off main street. the remaining demonstrators moved their demonstrations to the police station and promised to stay there until the 11 were released. the nationwide occupy wall street protests are attracting venders hoping to make a profit off the movement. merchandise venders, clothing designers and others are

planning to market a wide variety of goods. t-shirts, coffee mugs and others covered with the occupy logos. two high level officials at penn state university announced tonight they are stepping down amidst an explosive child sex abuse scandal. drew levinson with the latest. >> reporter: former penn state defensive coordinator, jerry sandusky is out on bail. charged with sexually assaulting eight underage boys over a 15 year period. he says he didn't do it. >> jerry is very depressed. very distraught about the charges. >> reporter: sandusky coached at penn state for three

decades, before retiring in 1999, prosecutors accuse him of sexually assaulting some of the victims on campus. sandusky had access to vulnerable children through a charity he founded for at risk kids. the pennsylvania attorney general said this is a case about a sexual predator who used his position in the community to repeatedly prey on young boys. lawyers are also investigating a possible cover-up. in 2002, a graduate assistant reported he saw sandusky assaulting a 10-year-old boy in a shower. legendary coach joe paterno passed the complaint on. prosecutors charged those two with not alerting police. curly and schultz said they did nothing wrong. still, they're expected to turn themselves in. students are stunned. >> it's quite heartbreaking. >> you don't expect this type

is superficial. minor damages, like brick walls. lots of cracks and you know, sheetrock, things of that nature. >> this resident appeared as though it had been ransacked with cracks on the walls. some have worried an oil field may have caused the quakes. geologists say there's no evidence of that. a car went off a cliff, an suv carrying eight women, seven teens, skidded into a creek 125 feet below. this is eastern idaho. a search and rescue team repelled down to the car, as the team above set up a rig to bring them up. it was a procedure the teams had practiced only recently. >> very prepared. we just trained about two weeks ago, in this very same area.

we did all of this training, and here we are. so we're very, very prepared for it. >> the rescue effort took five hours. the victims were rushed to the hospital. six of them were treated and released. none of the women suffered life- threatening injuries. nearly 100,000 people in the northeast are still without power tonight, and in the cold. it may be several days before the lights and heat come back on. and this is why. an unusual october snowstorm. rues are still working to restore electricity. the bulk of the outages are in connecticut. power company officials apologized earlier for the delay in restoring power. a lot of people just finally now turning on their heaters in the bay area. a look at the week ahead. it was a pretty cool weekend for most locations here. some snow in the high country of the sierra as well. about 6,000 feet, a little lower than that. not much accumulated who 6. lake level, they're looking at

snow right now. up in the tahoe basin, we didn't see any snow in our local mountains, but we may by this time next week. we've got another batch of rain headed our way, first off, we're going to look for skies to clear out tonight. the rain shower activity we saw this weekend is finally winding down out over the east bay hills and moving off to the south. we'll look for cool temperatures tonight. skies clear out, a little patchy fog in the morning. high pressure settling up for the next couple days. temperatures today in the upper 50s, to low 60s for most locations. a cool day around the bay. upper 50s in the north bay, and the east bay, 62 in oakland. must have been due to the game over there. 61 in redwood city. 57 in san francisco. 57 in pacifica as well. we're taking a look at the lows for tomorrow. we see temperatures cool. mid- to upper 30s this evening at the bay. still partly cloudy first thing

in the morning, the skies will be mostly clear throughout the area. a potential for patchy fog forming. tomorrow night, we'll probably be a little colder than tonight because skies will be completely clear by then. we see the cold unsettled weather has been moving across the state from north to south, with most of the shower activity crossing yesterday. we did have widely scattered cells out there today, mainly south around monterey. that is clearing out this evening, as mentioned, we'll be mostly clear in the morning. the patchy fog giving way to mostly sunny by tomorrow afternoon as this high pressure system moves into the region through midweek. now we'll see a slight warm up, but nothing dramatic. just a couple of degrees into the mid- to upper 60s for warmer locations. by thursday, the next front appearing in the gulf of alaska moving into the area. bringing with it cold and unsettled weather again for veterans day and the weekend ahead. most of the energy offshore tomorrow. patchy fog right at the bay.

temperatures up a few degrees here. once again, we'll see mid- to low 60s for the warmer locations. at the bay, upper 50s, to low 60s. mid-50s, likely at the beach. then as we take a look at the seven day, you see it stays nice through midweek. thursday evening, we see the next front approaching into friday, with rain once again becoming likely. cool air again, which will continue. this cold pattern into and probably through the weekend. more shower activity late saturday into sunday. enjoy this little break while it lasts. there's cold weather on the way. >> you're saying showers. so not a huge storm? >> well, we'll see the brunt of the moisture on friday. that will be pretty steady for a couple of hours. then turn to showers, and continue with cold showers through the weekend. >> thank you very much. well there's no snow yet in chicago, but that doesn't stop

the lundberg survey says the average price is $3.33. prices are higher than the national average here in the bay area. in san francisco, with $3.91 a gallon. in the oakland area, $3.83. and $3.82 in the san jose area. thousands of protesters gathered near the white house today to oppose a plan for an oil pipeline they say could harm the environment. they did so exactly one year before the presidential election. many of those protesting are usually supporters of the president. >> in their biggest demonstration yet, more than 1,000 protesters had tough words for a president they helped to elect. >> would you vote for him in 2012? >> the answer to him is, you know what? i might not. >> they want the president to kill the keystone oil pipeline,
