squared off. it was focused on national security and foreign policy and . they strongly criticized the press. >> reporter: and they indeed it strongly criticize him. all of them came prepared to discuss national security. the managing editor of cbs evening news described it as the commander in chief debate which was going to focus on what they would do when the phone call rang at 3:00 in the morning with the issue of national security. one of the candidates came with another agenda. rick perry came to repair the damage from a flubb he made from an earlier debate. >> they took the stage in south carolina to talk national security and foreign policy. in a debate sponsored by cbs

news and the national journal. they tackled questions for 90 minutes on issues like torture, tie was pakistan and iran's nuclear ambitions. gingrich and romney both said they would take military action gibbs against iran to stop them from getting a nuclear weapon. >> if we elect obama again they will have a nuclear weapon. if you elect me they will not. >> reporter: the stake was high for perry. the texas governor tried to come on strong after a big blunder in a debate wednesday. if. >> if you eliminate the department of energy. >> glad you remembered it. >> i have had some time to think about it. >> me too. >> reporter: most of the candidates criticized the president on a variety of issues including his decision to bring home 30,000 troops from afghanistan starting next

year. former ambassador didn't. >> i don't want to be nation building in afghanistan when this nation is so separately needing to be built. >> reporter: national polls show 72% of bop voters haven't made up their mind. the candidates know time is running out. primary season starts january 3er when voters in iowa head to the caucus. grin rich is seeing momentum in the polls and to build on that he announced he is opening offices here in south carolina where the first republican presidential primary in the south will be held, january 21st. just over two months from now. reporting live in spartanburg. >> let me ask you a question that wase mailed from a viewer about the use of torture for interrogation of prisoners of war. it seemed to highlight the differences of the candidates. . >> reporter: it did. two of them came out strongly in favor of reversing the obama

administration's policy on not using water boarding other means of torture that had been adopted by the bush administration. michelle bacchmann and also herman cain said they would reverse the policy. hunts man, former governor of utah and ron paul. the representative said they would not support that. hunts man saying to use those policies would diminish the role of the united states in the eyes of the world. >> spartanburg. thank you. occupy oakland protest he is camped outside city hall got a second eviction notice but they are ignoring it. we show you they held a prove march and returned to business as usual. >> reporter: occupy oakland protesters left the camp briefly to march. the march they said reflected support for the middle east up

rising referred to as the arab springs. oakland police officers took up positions ahead of marchers, ready to protect businesses, there were no incidents before the brief event ended at the city hall. campers and supporters took a break from protesting briefly. music and a up beat mood at the camp outside city hall suggested they were a little concerned about a pending eviction. police officers gave the second notice in two days. notices that were met within difference and determination by occupiers not to leave. >> we have no intention of leaving. if we get evicted we will be back. >> reporter: ricky says he has been here since the start and spends his days working a full time job. >> preparations for it should it happen? >> we are getting more live streams up and running, working to get the community aware and we are making announcements for

what will happen if they get us out of. >> reporter: the shooting death of a man contributed to a new resolve on the part of officials to end the occupation. friday the mayor released doves asking campers to leave. they rejected that. according to a e-mail 160 tents remain on the plaza. down only slightly from a high of 180. late today occupiers rallied. >> we are now in many ways involved in the same struggle but most pundits call the arab spring has its roots in the demonstrations, and occupations taking place all round the world. >> reporter: lots of issues for them to embrace and lots of stories inside the camp. we talked to a couple looking for their daughter. they said she they had mixed feelings about the movement and are worried about their

daughter's safety. >> scott olson out of the hospital. the iraq war veteran was badly injured when occupy protesters clashed with police more than two weeks ago. his friends say he was hit in the head by an object fired by police possibly a tear gas canister. his friends say he has a difficult time talking. oakland police are investigating what happened the night he was hurt. oakland police say they received nearly 800 complaints around the world about officers actions during a clash. more than half of the complaints came from people who weren't even there. during one confrontation officers raided a camp and deployed tear gas. police say only 12 of those complaints came from people who were there. they were checking on the where abouts of another 331 people who filed complaints. two police officers were attacked by people with sharp

objects in san francisco. that's according to police who say theya escaped back into the crowd. the protesters marched today in support of the egyptian revolution. they received a police escort as they marched from the federal reserve building. they said they were showing support for the revolution and they wanted to make the point they face the same struggle. burglaries on the rise and police are on the streets in one community. it's come up with a high tech plan to help catch criminals. we met with people in montclair who say when it comes to crime a picture is worth a thousand words >> reporter: it's a low tech way to announce a high tech plan. that is how this movement started in oakland's montclair community. a neighbor to neighbor affair. >> we are a force to reckon with. >> reporter: there is been an average of 1.5 burglaries a

day. >> my neighbor up the street, he had his front door kicked in twice. >> reporter: neighbors decided they needed cameras and that if more people bought into it more of the neighborhood would be safe. >> this gives us another set of eyes when we aren't around to keep us in the loop. . >> reporter: they handed out new cameras to those who bought them. they got a small group discount on service and tried to sell the judged to those who vanity. >> chances are they aren't supposed to be on your property if they are there. >> reporter: tools like this are very important with all the cuts to the police force. >> its going to create more cases. >> reporter: which means police may give the burglary a second look. >> if you have a good solid lead on somebody creating crimes and doing damage that's what you have to roll with. l. >> reporter: it may prevent a crime. >> it didn't stop somebody from coming down and thinking about breaking in to my house when i was home.

>> reporter: but a high quality picture can be worth more than words. >> don't mess with us. you are going to get caught. >> reporter: in oakland, cbs5. >> today pg&e declared the gas pipeline that ruptured during testing last weekend safe. last weekend's failed test blew open a pipe and sent water and mud onto interstate 280 in wood sidel today they did more tests at nearly double the normal pressure. no leaks were found. next a coating will be put on the pipe and it'll be covered back up. penn state players left the field with their headed bowed, the fans mostly silent. emotional day halt the last home game of the season without coach joe. the game ended with a loss capped the week. we are there where the focus has turned to healing. >> reporter: it was a powerful moment that silenced a stadium. >> i pray this game will be a

revealed today in pleasant on. the art center is housed in a historic old fire house. today the art center showed off the crystal, bell created by jack dorn. it pays tribute to the roots of the center. the bell weighs 400-pounds and is created from more than 8,000 pieces of glass. >> this type because nobody else was really pushing this type of glass in any really creative direction. i thought that it was -- it was a way to get my artistic voice heard. >> it is stunning. it took 18 months to create. we are at the end of california's fire season and just in time because it's getting more rain. >> we have a chance of more showers creeping back in to the picture but yesterday light rain is gone for now. moved off to southern california, generated some

thunderstorms activity down there. we are looking at skies clearing out across the bay as we look at the golden gate we see no fog in place at this time. however, we will likely see some first thing in the morning, patchy fog pretty much in the inland valley, not so much along the coast. it'll burn off by midmorning leaving it mostly sunny through the afternoon. it was high pressure returning through midweek to dry us out and warm temperatures, nothing dramatic but a couple degrees of warming here. today upper 60s in the watcher locations, 69 san rafael, 67 in concord and livermore. 62 as the clouds backed up against the east bay hills, temperatures in the mid to low 60s. add a couple degrees to this tomorrow that could take us into the low 70's for the north bay here as they clear out tonight. we will see temperatures cooling into the upper 30s to

low 40s around the bay more like upper 40s to low 50s here tonight. once again we will see mostly clear skies, through the evening, we were looking at yesterday and a few high cloud from the next frontal system approaching the area and looks like it'll pass us by. for the most part as the showers move south. we will continue to exit into the deserts southwest. we will see high pressure building up the central valley coast that. will keep the storm track to the north. a glancing blow from the tail end of that by thursday and into friday moving across the north bay into the greater bay area for friday and into if not through the weekend. we will cooldown again. slight chance of showers but it'll be a glancing blow for the most part. as we see a bit of patchy fog temperatures still in the mid to upper 60's range for most locations, we he may see a low 70 or two. maybe up around napa and we see the warming continues here

through midweek as that high pressure system sets up with northerly winds across the area and then by thursday we will see cooler air and a chance of showers moving into the north bay, then spreading through the greater bay area here for friday and into the weekend, hit or miss type shower activity, doesn't look like a big delu ge but a few showers here and there, probably in to the beginning of the week but no showers expected for tomorrow at candlestick. mostly sunny, temperatures in the mid to low 60's by game time which i'm sure will make him happy. >> we will find out. >> usually pretty cooled. >> thank you. 75 years ago today one of the greatest days in the bay history, the opening of the bay bridge. why it's considered one of the engineering wonders of the world.
