why one man's work is now prompting new scrutiny of the fired for falsifying safety inspections on other state jobs. why one man's work is now costing new scrutiny of the bay bridge project. chp officer shot during a traffic stop in surgery right now. a major highway expected to be shut down much of the night. a third plea by the city of oakland for occupiers to pack up and leave. how the city is trying to help find a place for them to go. good evening. it is a $6 billion project, designed to keep bay area motorists safe during the next major earthquake. tonight, there are questions about whether the new eastern span of the bay bridge will do that. that's because an inspector also respond for safety tects set for safety projects apparently faked test results. lynn came yee has more. >> reporter: after a three-year investigation, that cal trans worker has been fired.

but what he did raises scary questions about just how thorough the safety tests were done on the foundation of the new span. duane wiles was responsible for critical safety tests, including foundation piling for the new bay bridge span. but an anonymous whistle blower said he was falsifying reports, raising questions about the safety tests he did on the bridge. >> we went back and double checked everything he worked on back to 2004, because there was an in send wages there was false fix on the bay bridge. >> reporter: wiles failed to verify that the testing gauge he used was even operating properly before testing the bay bridge tower foundations. >> the daily testing that was supposed to be done was a functionality test and they were not done. if the piece of equipment was not functioning, it would have been evident when the information came back and was turned over to the engineer. >> reporter: after a three-year investigation, cal trans has

fired wiles, but engineers are confident the foundation pilings on the new span of the bay bridge are safe, because multiple tests are performed. and wiles was not the only technician conducting those tests. >> there are so many people involved in this, that's why we have a high level of assurance that we do not have a problem. at the end of the day, there is no evidence whatsoever of any false fix with respect to the bay bridge foundations, period. zero. none. >> reporter: so while wiles might be dismissed, and tonight cal trans officials are not overruling the possibility they may also file criminal charges. >> linda yee, thank you very much. a chp officer has been shot during a traffic stop just after 6:00 tonight at elk grove boulevard in south sacramento. the freeway is expected to be closed for most of the night. the officer was apparently shot while approaching a suspect vehicle, which was stopped

alongside the freeway. witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing a car flipped on its side on the southbound shoulder of the highway. police responding to the scene shot and killed the suspect. the officer was taken to kaiser permanente hospital and is undergoing surgery. a hospital spokesman said he is in critical condition. the chp says the officer is expected to survive. a man hit and pinned under a muni bus in san francisco this afternoon has died. witnesses say the man was hit, as he crossed the street at 5th and mission. he was pinned under the rear wheels. crews had to lift the tbows free him. the driver has been placed on leave, pending the investigation. a man has been killed in a hang gliding incident near milpitas. the glider crashed into the side of a hill at ed levin county park. winds were very light at the time, which may have contributed to the crash. emergency responders say the man was conscious for about 15

minutes when they arrived on scene, but he then collapsed and died. another plea by mayor jean quan to occupy oakland to leave their camp site near city hall. in a statement released today, mayor quan said, quote, because of the increased violence associated with the camp and the strain on our city's economy and resources, now is the time for the encampment to end. don knapp is live on the scene. >> reporter: it has been another long day of anticipating the expected police raid to end this encampment. of course that has not yet materialized. the activists did come from outside and offer a compromise resolution to the organization here, one they hope will end this all without a raid and end it peacefully. as occupy oakland residents brace for what appears to be an inevitable forceful eviction, this group of outside activists called for a public forum, on a plan to harmonize the occupy

oakland protest with the oakland community at large. >> the last forceful eviction was an absolute fiasco. and another one will only be worse. we're asking the mayor and the police to totally take off the table any forcible eviction of this encampment here. >> reporter: this woman says she supports occupy, and runs a business downtown. >> the city of oakland is not an evil power. it's just a city, and these two groups certainly can work together. >> reporter: long-time community activist and former city council member wilson wiles also seeks a better ground. >> hopefully we can see a lot of dialogue and discussion. >> reporter: oakland city leaders have already delivered two eviction notices to the encampment, while offering a standing invitation of warm beds in city shelters. >> if anyone is homeless, we're offering them a safe place

tonight and for the women and children. >> reporter: the approach is getting only little interest from the homeless in the tent city outside city hall. >> i don't want to live in a shelter. i'm a vet. i would rather be outside right now. [ indescernible ] >> only a few backs from iraq, and i'm adjusting right now. but i tell you what, this is beautiful right here. >> reporter: mickey maguire, a psychotherapist, who volunteered in the encampment said she believes in the goals of the movement, but needs a broader range of the 99%. >> to come together and create numbers and broader range of voices and try to make this happen together. >> reporter: it's not even clear if there is enough time for a compromise to be worked out before police arrive. of course we do not know when it's going to happen. back to you. >> don, you've been there night after night. what is the feeling tonight? do they seem tense or fairly relaxed ? >> reporter: they seem indifferent to whatever it is

that the city says or police say or anybody says about how to end this. what they want are their goals, which whatever they may be, and they will stand pat. >> dan knapp in oakland, thank you very much. after skirmishing with police most of the day, occupy portland protesters finally left the park where they had been camping. here's what it looked like after 36 days of occupation. they hope to find an indoor space as winter weather approaches. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: police in riot gear pushed protesters out of their camp site in downtown portland, oregon. officers carried out demonstrators who refused to leave on their own. authorities started tearing down tents and cleaning the area, while fences went up to block protesters from getting back in.

>> don't take me! >> reporter: portland's mayor ordered police to shut down the site, saying conditions were unhealthy. protesters started clashing with police early sunday morning, when officers first arrived to evict them. >> it was actually a fairly controlled movement, and although it was noisy and confrontational, our officers performed in an exceptional manner. >> reporter: after a day-long standoff, demonstrators marched to a new location to regroup. >> there is a large group of people who are saying to take a breath, back off, let's reboot. let's do occupy portland 2.0. >> reporter: this weekend, similar confrontations happened around the country. in salt lake city, police arrested more than a dozen people who refused to keep the camp they have lived in for three weeks. in denver, riot police moved in on demonstrators illegally setting up tents at their protest site. and in albany, new york,

officers handcuffed at least two dozen people who refused to obey a curfew at a state-owned park. occupy wall street protesters say they are a peaceful movement, demonstrating against corporate greed. danielle nottingham, cbs news. uc berkeley's police chief is interviewing witnesses and reviewing video, looking for any cases where officers may have used unnecessary force. video shows dozens of officers in riot gear ramming protesters with batons during last week's occupy cal demonstration. an associate vice chancellor says authorities will work very hard not to repeat the violence at a student walkout planned for tuesday. two people were slightly hurt when their apartment caught fire in san francisco's inner richmond district this morning. firefighters managed to keep flames at third avenue and clemente street to one unit. they think the fire was

. one day after italy's prime minister stepped down, an economist has accepted the monumental task of forming a new government to keep the country out of financial ruin. the man must now confront italy's $2.6 trillion debt. >> reporter: italy's new hope, task to form a new government and lead italy back from the brink of financial disaster. we owe it to our children to give them a future of dignity

and hope, he said. outgoing prime minister berlusconi dominated italian politics for 46 years, but forced to resign when members of his own party pulled their support. many italians celebrated what they called the end of an era. i hope very much this will be a moment of rebirth for italy, says this young man. but berlusconi supporters are calling for his return. and berlusconi himself said he's not leaving political life. i resigned out of a sense of responsibility -- to protect against more attacks on italy, a statement said. to reassure markets and italians that the country can reduce its massive debt. he said he will name a cabinet quickly and begin the workup to prevent italian default, a default that would impact italy, the european union, and the world's economy. cbs news, rome.

president obama said today the u.s. will not be able to put people back to work and expand opportunity, unless the asia-pacific region is also successful. at the apec meeting in honolulu today, he cited the 21 economies and nearly 3 billion citizens in the region. mr. obama said their success was, quote, absolutely critical to this country's economic growth. >> we consider it a top priority because we're not going to be able to put our folks back to work and grow our economy and expand opportunity, unless the asian pacific region is also successful. >> conversations dafoe cussed on three key areas, increasing trade investment, promoting green jobs, and streamlining regulation. herman cain's wife says sexual harassment allegations against her husband don't ring true. gloria cain told fox news that her husband, quote, totally respects women. mrs. cain says herman cain would

have to have a split personality to do the things he's accused of. at least three women claim cain harassed them when he was the head of the national restaurant association in the 1990s. and this story caught our eye in an sf gate blog. a report about elderly people taking the groceries they get at food pantries and re-selling them. so we went to see for ourselves and found what appeared to be donated groceries for sale at the heart of the city's farmers market at the plaza. a security officer told the gate the re-sellers scattered when approached and no one would talk to our photographer. the food pantries say it's an example of how desperate these times are for some families. meteorologist jim bernard joining us now. we had a very lovely weekend. guess what's coming this week. >> well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. keep a couple more nice days across the area. indeed a lovely weekend. temperatures near seasonal norms. got a few more days of this yet,

as we see looking at the golden gate bridge tonight, mostly clear out there. we can see the cars moving across the bridge. no marine layer in place to speak of. however, first thing in the morning, patchy fog mainly in the inland valleys, moisture on the ground and radiational cooling out there. otherwise, we'll be going into mostly sunny by tomorrow afternoon. high pressure prevail through midweek. a few nice days ahead before we take the turn that ann mentioned. today we saw temperatures in the upper 60s, pushing the 70-degree mark at 69. fairfield topping out at 68 today. mid-60s for everybody else around the bay for the most part, with low 60s and upper 50s back at the beach. as we get a look at tonight's lows, we'll see in the north bay, clouds did clear out a bit. we'll see upper 30s to low 40s. back to the bay, mid to upper 40s for overnight lows. a few low 50s in there as well.

overall weather pattern, overrunning high clouds in advance of a funnel system going by to the north. not much moisture for us here for the next several days. just a mix of clouds across the region until thursday. then we'll see a change in this pattern. right now, high pressure is prevailing just off the coast. we look for gusty and northerly winds to keep skies mostly clear other than high clouds i mentioned. but by thursday, into friday, this pattern changes and we see once again this low pressure system out of the gulf of alaska diving south and bringing with us a chance of rain shower activity and some very cold air. right now, that high pressure system should last through midweek. here's the future cast for the next several days. a bit of fog flirting with the coast. other than that, we'll be looking at mainly high clouds across the area. temperatures to remain pretty close to where they have been this weekend. again, that's near seasonal norms. we'll be talking mid to upper

60s across the fringe locations, possibly the low 70s for a few spots. mid-60s back at the bay. low 60s in the city and at the beach here through midweek. then we see the pattern shifting beginning on thursday, as we see more clouds moving into the area with a chance of showers developing by friday. continuing into the weekend, the main feature here is the colder air, which will dive into the area friday morning. typically cold air doesn't contain a lot of moisture, so the main factor will be the chill across the region, with light shower activity, and unsettled weather into, if not through the weekend. sorry. >> got a few days of rain, but what's the rain total look like? are we behind, ahead? >> it's still early in the season, but we're off about a quarter of an inch. >> just a nuisance. >> it's been a dry november so far. >> we need real rain or no rain. >> last year we were an inch above where we are right now. >> all right, jim. >> more to come.
