republican presidential hops you're watching cbs5 eyewitness news on the cw. >> republican presidential hopeful in the first of two debates. one argument that really touched a nerve. alone in the middle of the night. a six-year-old boy found in an east bay parking lot. >> sunny and warm and january. the warning for the bay area and what firefighters are encouraging homeowners to do while the weather is nice. good evening. the republican presidential candidates tonight held their first debate in new hampshire since the iowa caucuses. and the attention focused on tearing down those who finish at the top in iowa. danielle is live where polls show a substantial lead. >> tonight was really about the fight for second place here in new hampshire as you just said.

mitt romney is holding on to a commanding lead in the state and newt gingrich and rick santorum tried their best to rattle the front runner. >> the gop candidates showed up ready to spar. for the first time, rick santorum shared center stage, getting more air time and attacks. >> you're a big government conservative. >> you vote against everything. i do vote for some spending. >> santorum and ron paul went head to head over the debt and sparks flew when paul and gingrich clashed over sending americans to war. >> i personally resent the kind of comments and aspersions he makes without accurate information. i was married and had two kids and i went. >> mitt romney worked to work above the fray. >> he never led a business. never led a city.

>> this is the 14th time the gop candidates have shared a stage. several have seen poll numbers dramatically rise and fall based on previous debate performances. john huntsman is running out of time to make an impression on new hampshire voters. >> i think i understand better than anyone on the stage the complex national security implications that we will face going forward. >> rick perry isn't banking on new hampshire, but he is trying to reach republicans in south carolina. >> i happen to think i'm the only outsider with the possible exception of john huntsman. >> the candidates will go another round sunday morning for one more debate before tuesday's primary. and going into tonight's debate, romney had a 20 point lead over his republican rival in the latest polls. live in manchester, new hampshire, danielle knotting ham, now ham, now back to you. >> do you think there will be

a shift tomorrow when they debate again? >> well ann, it's really hard to say tonight. no one broke any real ground in their message. romney was the clear front runner. he did not appear to be shaken by any of the attacks from the others on the stage. but we'll find out again in the morning. they are set to debate tomorrow morning and they'll hit the stage. and it's really a lot at stake for the other candidates. they have to have a good showing here if they want to catch up in the polls with romney on tuesday. >> they need it for their campaign financing. danielle in manchester, new hampshire. thank you so much. a six-year-old boy found all alone in the parking lot remains in the custody of child protective services. a passer by found him wandering at 3:30 this morning. the good samaritan called police and stayed with the child until police arrived. they arranged for child protective services to get

involved. police say the boy is safe and unhurt. >> we have a child involved. child protective services takes the primary lead with the investigation and through that, will be determined if there was criminal negligence or if this was just an accident. a simple mistake. something happened. >> police have notified the boy's parents, but he will remain with cps while the investigation continues. a woman's body found in an oakland home and police are trying to figure out what happened. that's in oakland's district. the woman has not yet been identified and it's not known how she died. a four year battle over parking at the new 49ers stadium in santa clara is over, but the resolution didn't come cheap. great america will allow the stadium to be built on its over flow parking lot. the theme park will also let fans park in its main lot.

the deal will cost the niners $12.5 million. the city of santa clara, which owns the land, will allow great america to keep more of its profits. in return, great america will drop its lawsuit to block the stadium project. so that's one hurdle down. a few more to go. since voters are shocked at the new stadium's increasing cost. ann on why some taxpayers say that's not what they signed up for. >> debbie, you have been spreading lies and rumors for a year. >> answer. >> it's a debate many thought was over should santa clara help build a new $1 billion stadium for the 49ers on land near the great america theme park. the city council just passed the financing plan, including a $850 million bank loan. >> we are not nay sayers. we want what is right and fiscally responsible for the city. >> the group santa clara plays fair is collecting signatures for a referendum saying it's

not the same plan voters passed supporting this stadium in 2010. >> now that we have a contract, it doesn't match what we were told. we need to look under the covers and have a chance to vote. not what it was portrayed. >> reaction to the petition at this pardon mer's market was mixed. >> most of my friends and their friends are for it. >> dozens signed their names. >> why did you decide to sign it? >> because i trust these people here. >> the reality of it, a lot of the information is misinformation. it's the same misinformation they were giving. i'm sure after this comes to pass, something they continue to say. >> in fact, the city isn't even sure a referendum on this vote is legal. >> we are still researching it. until the attorney comes out with a conclusive recommendation, i will be reluctant to say anything. >> until they find this is legal, i don't know if we have the right city attorney.

who is he working for? us or the 49ers. >> santa clara will be collecting signatures for the next couple of weeks. their goal is 6,000 signatures by january 17. in santa clara. cbs5. a bone marrow drive for a critically ill boy had a good turnout. kyle crawford was diagnosed with a bone marrow disease. he needs a transplant, but it's difficult to find a match. the drive is an effort to find a match with someone of similar ethnic background. kyle's mother stopped by to thank donors. he was on his way to the emergency room where kyle was taken today. >> i'm just amazed of the amazing community we have. >> oh, that's all we have is hope. >> there will be another drive next saturday. >> believe it or not, a fire watch is in effect for a dozen

northern california counties. the first red flag warning of the year is january. we are usually on storm watch. it's warm and dry outside. firefighters say now is the time to protect your home. john shows us, destructive wild fires can start where you least expect them. >> you wouldn't think houses on this street are in danger of wild fire until you see their backyards. >> nine times out of ten, people say we weren't prepared, we didn't think about it and now we have a threat upon us. >> there are 30,000 people living in the canyons above hayward. most people know it because of this. the oakland hills fire in 1991 convinced a lot of people that even urban areas can burn out of control. >> my husband and i stay home every year on fourth of july with our hoses on our deck. i don't know if that will save our home, but at least we will be able to spot something

start. >> the fire department here has received a government grant to help residents help themselves. >> we have dry weather right now. people can do landscape work. >> the hope is that homeowners will clear out a lot of the excess fuels around their houses and the grant will pay for woodchippers to remove the debris. the residents at this meeting take the threat seriously, but kevin has been battling his neighbor for years. >> and every summer, the weeds get six, seven feet. sometimes higher than that. i have to call and fight with them and fight with them. >> firefighters are dedicated people, but they are not suicidal. one of them told me this is exactly the kind of house they might let burn because it is built on the sheer side of a cliff and those trees are at a level where they don't think they would be able to save this house in a fire storm. >> as soon as we have one house in the neighborhood that is -- they are exposing all of their neighbors and it makes it

difficult for us to get access to that property. >> it's that access that can spell the difference between life and death. in hayward, cbs5. >> the word of the year for 2011 has been announced by the american society. which one will it be? tomorrow marks one year since the tucson shooting that injured congresswoman gabrielle giffords. tonight we remember the youngest victim who died and the woman who brought her is struggling to cope. >> lovely weather once again for the weekend around the bay as we continue this dry and mild pattern. clear and breezy tonight. we'll hang on to that dryness right on through next week for the looks of things. i'll have your forecast coming up next.

left six dead and 13-wounde, including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. tomorrow marks one year since the massacre. giffords visited a safeway for the first time since the shooting and today hundreds laced up their walking shoes in tucson for a stroll and roll to commemorate that day. nine-year-old christina is among the victims. ben tracy with how the woman who brought that little girl to meet the congresswoman is coping with the tragedy one year later. >> i wish i could pick you up and carry you down, but i can't. >> susie has every reason not to be in this classroom. not to once again bond with children. >> i love you back. >> on january 8, susie took her neighbor's daughter, nine-

year-old christina taylor green to meet their congresswoman. shortly after they arrived at this tucson grocery store, the first of 31 shots rang out. >> congresswoman giffords slid down. >> we first talked to her last year, just after she got out of the hospital. she was shot three times. her pain was still raw. >> i remember lying on the ground holding christina's hand and looking at her. and telling her to stay with me and not to do this alone. sweety, i love you, and christina, christina. sorry. >> christina died, but her memory lives on. it lives on today in tucson at this walk held in her honor. in the playground christina's parents had built nearby. and in her corneas donated so two other children can now see. >> when we heard that, we absolutely knew it was the best decision in the world. and you know, i know christina

would be proud to have helped somebody. >> after losing her young friend, susie needed help, too. >> one of the things that made me saddest when i was in the hospital was the fear that my friends with children would think i was toxic and that they would be afraid to let their kids be with me. >> then last february, a local school asked her to judge a contest. in which kids take pictures expressing their hopes for america. >> my hope for america is help homeless people. >> my hope is for peaceful country. >> susie quickly learned she was far from toxic. >> okay, where are you supposed to be? >> she has been coming back to that same tucson school nearly every week. >> gorgeous. >> boosting her spirits and giving back. >> christina is gone, but all of these wonderful little faces are right here.

and it reminds me that there's joy and love in the world that life goes on. >> sunday morning at 10:11, bells will ring all over tucson marking the exact moment the shooting began. on sunday evening, congresswoman giffords will attend a candle light vigil. ben tracy, cbs news, tucson. the cost to get into the aquarium has gone up 10%. the first price hike in three years. general admission is now $32.95. an aquarium spokesman said the goal is to remain the best aquarium in the world and operating revenues are what paid for it. research by the aquarium shows people won't mind paying an extra $3. nearly $2 million people visit each year. it's not aquarium weather as beach weather. >> it is warm and balmy this weekend. another lovely weekend pattern taking shape here as we continue dry and mild into the

beginning of the year here. it looks like this dry pattern will be with us through the middle of the month at least, there's nothing on the horizon threatening rain. we have strong offshore flow howling through the north and east bay hills. clear and breezy tonight. that will keep the fog from forming and also keep those overnight lows above the freezing mark across the interior. look for the wents to settle down. remaining mostly clear and slightly warmer. continue dry and mild through midweek as we do have wind advisory or did have a wind advisory up earlier. it's down now, but gusty conditions prevail over the bay. as we see temperatures tonight in the mid to upper 30s for the north and east bay. and again, winds will be settling down through the early morning hours as high pressure continues to preveil once again. across the west and that is keeping the cloud cover and the storm track going by to our north with patchy fog forming in the central valley here.

that will gradually increase through midweek. stay clear and breezy here tonight with the offshore breeze. highs will begin to shift to the east tomorrow and look for slightly warmer conditions as the high dominates once again into the beginning of the week. this is a very familiar pattern here. it has been in place for a couple months now and a high is stationary across the western half of the country. it has been our predominant weather feature. a weak disturbance through the area with a few clouds, but not much in the way of rain for us. we will continue dry and mild into, if not through all of next week. temperatures will bump up into the mid and upper 60s. for some of the warmer locations, we are looking at the 70s out there today as well. should repeat for tomorrow as again a very lovely weekend taking shape here. that trend gradually cool into midweek as we see that cloud

chief of staff his wife was displeased with the handling of the healthcare battle. emanuel was indignant. >> i'm sure president obama was deeply offended. >> cantor writes her reported comments that living in the white house was hell created problems for former press secretary, robert gibbs. when she her honored he was upset at his efforts at damage control, he cursed the first lady to staffers. >> that's shocking. first of all, it's really stupid. they don't understand that she's the wife. and that she has the power. >> the book revealed the evolution of michelle obama from the harvard educated mom who felled felt everyone was waiting for a black woman to make a mistake. >> i think she is now getting her sea legs.

>> it's about giving you a voice with decision makers. >> the book says mrs. obama has found her voice. >> it's about getting something done. >> and is all in with helping her husband get reelected. karen brown, cbs news, new york. the world's tallest bridge is now open in mexico. the bridge in durango, mexico is 304-meters high. that's tall enough to fit the eiffel tower under it. our bay area bridges don't hold any such records. the bay bridge is one of the most hard working. it has one of the longest spans in the world and carries 270,000 vehicles per day. some giant pandas in captivity are back to be released into the wild in china. the problem, they've never lived in their natural habitat before. the animals will have to move to panda valley. it's a research center designed

half. brees throws three touchdowns and finishes with 466 yards passing. new orleans sets an nfl playoff record with 626 total yards. they beat the lions 45-28. the texasans won their first playoff game in franchise history. the defense had four sacks and ran for over 100 touchdowns. houston beat cincinnati 31-10. they'll take on the ravens next sunday. the sharks hosting the capitals. san jose hasn't lost in 2012. tied at 2 in the third. a sweet pass to patrick marlowe to put the sharks back on top. they go to win 3-2. >> he needed 34 for the win. he misses. time expires. utah wins 88-87. the warriors lose their fifth straight. and college hoops were blown out by byu, 81-56.
