i was laying in bed and i got a good note. it smells like a fire. >> could the firebug be on the loose in the north bay? more than a dozen fires have been set overnight. london, tokyo, oakland, named one of the top destinations to visit. what got the city the top five. now, care for a young woman -- terrifying jump for a young woman. the cord breaks while she is bungee jumping. i'm ann notarangelo. two men will be honored this week as they saved two elderly people as their house went up in flames. don knapp tells us what happened. >> reporter: laura healy recovers what could be saved from her grandparent's fremont home, which burned early thursday. her grandfather, the 86-year- old sam healy and 76-year-old grandmother made their way back out the door, but trapped in

the walkway inside the house as flames pumped windows around them. the gate was locked. it may have been the very sad end of the story had it not been for the men who saw that here. >> as i understand, they were trapped behind the gate because the gate opens up from this side and the gentleman, they let them out. and they got them away from the house and then they had called 911 already. >> reporter: they were both on their way to make a recycling pickup when they saw the smoke and came to the rescue. according to an alameda county fire press release, the men hollered into the smokefield house and made lots of noise. they eventually heard the elderly couple here. made their way to the gate and opened it, leading the victims to safety. so while they will be sifting through the ruins, they are both saddened and relieves, knowing they have lost some things, but they did not lose sam and billyjo. >> you would hope that they would stop and help.

believes that the city's first ever elected chinese-american mayor. he was a long-time civil service when he was appointed mayor a year ago to fill the term. >> i came in determined to apply what i have learned during all those years. i came in determined to bring a new level of civility to city hall. >> he paid service to the predecessors as mayor, working in city government for 23 years. in the meantime, today's inauguration of newly elected san francisco sheriff was clouded by allegations of domestic violence. he took his oath of office publicly this afternoon, but he was officially sworn in privately last night. now, earlier this week, a neighbor told police that he roughed up his wife. both of them have denied the

charges. a 13-year-old boy was trapped underneath a large bolder. firefighters said he was climbing on top of the rocks when the bolder came loose, crushing both his legs. it took crews 90 minutes and specialized hydraulic equipment to free the boy. he was rushed to the hospital with serious, but non-life- threatening injuries. it was one year ago today that a gunman opened fire outside a tucson, arizona

grocery store. today in tucson, nearly 1,000 people gathered for a vigil to honor those who died in the massacre. they tell us that giffords' and the other survivors have made remarkable progress, but still have a long ways to go. >> can you please lead us in the pledge of allegiance? >> reporter: she appeared measured, but confident on sunday night, leading the pledge of allegiance at the candlelight vigil for victims at the shooting that killed her one year ago. >> one nation under god, indivisible with liberty and justice for all! >> reporter: giffords has come a long ways within a year. it was just one year ago when life it will change -- life there changed. she was making an appearance outside the safeway store when a gunman started firing on a crowd gathered outside the parking lot. the congresswoman was shot in

the head. among the dead, a federal judge and 9-year-old christina green. she watched her young friend, christina died. she said that the weekend's memorial events are helping her heal. >> i can't bring her back, but i can take her with me forward and seeing all these people here doing the same, getting out, it warms my heart. >> reporter: giffords has amazed her doctors with her recovery and even returned to washington to make an appearance on capitol hill last summer. but she still has a long ways to go. she pointed to where she parked that car that day.

a little cooler last night. the high pressure system is moving off to the east. and we still have a light offshore breeze that will stay around for the next few days. keeping the storms going on by to the north. now, we will likely catch the tail end of one of these weak systems for you on tuesday, but we'll look for slightly cooler temperatures tomorrow. a few more clouds on tuesday. still no rain in the picture, however. and now, they fell into the mid to low 60s for them throughout the region. and they will be down in the low 60s as well.

romney is packing up the campaign rallies like this one. and a daily tracking poll that will be showing their support down 8% in the last week. but he still holds a double digit lead over his closest competitors. >> and they need to pull everything together with the findings and everything like that. and that is one of the good reasons that i'm supporting them. >> reporter: others in the crowd have not made up their minds. >> reporter: ron paul is running in second place. but john huntsman is making a move. >> get on out there and get standardized. he is now in third. rick perry and rick santorum is there. and they are the republican senators if many south carolina that will be holding their primaries in two weeks.
