the moe ten momentum will continue. >> an upset in south carolina. newt gingrich wins the primary. all candidates to stay in the race. good evening. in just a few hours, fans will be pouring in to candlestick park to watch the game between the 49ers and the new york giants. 49er faithfuls are there, despite a problem that could cause quite a mess. some tailgaters were camp ling out to get a prime spot to watch the game on tv. don. >> this may seem like a cold, dark, dreary place to spend the night, but in their luxury rv's, spending the night outside of candlestick, anticipating tomorrow is heaven, especially with what tomorrow might bring besides the rain. flames from an open grill provide some psych lodge cam warmth for these 49er fans from

southern california. outside their rv in the park behind candle stick. their plan for tomorrow. >> wake up early. get the barbecue ready and drink a lot of beer and enjoy the game tomorrow. >> a couple dozen tailgaters are braving a northern california winter for the game too big to miss. >> we have been waiting for 15 years now and it's absolutely wonderful to see him there now. >> how are they going to do tomorrow? >> i think pretty good. >> why is that? >> because they have been winning a lot of games this season. >> joel set up a camp complete with big screen tv. he is acting as the advanced man, which is arriving later tonight. >> we just got done eating dinner, we are all set for tomorrow. did some prep for tomorrow. a bunch of us are from a catering company. >> you had good food? >> for sure. >> the night is cold, but clear and dry. after a day that started out super wet. call it lake candle stick.

the heavily flooded parking lots on the bay side of the stadium. it looks more like a place for boating than tailgate picnicking. from early in the day, city crews have been running the pumps under the incident commander that take the flooding here that seriously. >> nothing more than anticipating with this storm, with tides coming in. this happens almost every year. >> especially a really big game, like tomorrow's nfc championship game between the 49ers and the new york giants. all week long, crews have been watching weather forecast. >> earlier in the week, we cleared to make sure the waste water could enter the sewer, and we set up and planned to come here today and pump if necessary and as you can see from behind me, we are in full pumping mode. >> pumps ran until late afternoon, moving out the flood water and drying out the lots. >> so we are hoping for a break from mother nature. expecting heavy rains to start tomorrow toward the end of the

game. so we should have this parking lot clear for the morning when the cars come in and for when the game is going on. >> whatever the rain has in store, it's ready. crews are standing by. >> so it looks like everything is ready for the game tomorrow. including the workers and the fans and a chance to end the 49er drought. >> that would be beautiful. don knapp at candlestick. thank you. the excitement is building with the arrival of the new york giants late this afternoon. their flight to the bay area arrived a little late because a woman got sick on their flight. the players went right into their hotel and we're not at liberty to say exactly where they are saying. as for the 49ers, they were laying low. >> a newly married couple is the winner of the san francisco park and rec's department biggest fan competition. >> congratulations. >> thank you. >> the tweet was among the thousand twitter entries received in less than 24 hours. they got married in shakespeare

garden 18 months ago and their wedding photo was the winning entry. his thought during their kiss, the gold rush girls. her thought, 49er patrick willis. the couple wins tickets and they will sit near the 49ers bench. mayor ed lee jokingly wished for a ride on michael bloomberg's private jet to a golf course, but the nfc championship between the two mayors is a more traditional one. rename 49th street in manhattan 49ers street. he also sent a dozen new york bagels to san francisco. if the giants win, mayor lee will outfit a cable car in blue and red and send bread to the big apple. of course, one big question on everyone's mind, is it going to rain during the game? elizabeth is here to talk about that. >> yes. at least very, very likely. we have a good chance of rain

on and off showers throughout much of the game. it doesn't look like it's going to be a huge washout, but rain could be a factor for game play for sure. temperatures should be mostly in the mid 50s. the last couple of hours, our forecast models are changed. we're going to see light showers as early as sunday morning. they could get wet as well. and see a light to moderate rain on and off throughout much of the game. looks like all the way to the end with the heaviest showers once the game is over. once again, temperatures across the bay area should be mostly in the mid 50s. coming up, a look at your seven- day forecast. >> thank you so much, elizabeth. >> besides the 49ers and the nfc championship, there is another game being played tomorrow. the afc championship. this game between the baltimore ravens and the new york england patriots is first. it starts at noon. you can see it right here on cbs 5. doctors say former penn state football coach, joe

paterno is in serious condition. but friends and some news organizations say he's near death. the 85-year-old was diagnosed with lung cancer in november, just days after being fired as head coach. paterno was hospitalized a week ago, suffering complications from cancer treatment. his family denies he's dying, saying on twitter he is continuing to fight for his life. hundreds of penn state students gathered at a statue of paterno on the campus to pay tribute. well, the search for additional victims of the cruise ship disaster in italy has been suspended. the decision came after instruments monitoring the ship's movement indicated that it has shifted again. but earlier today, another victim was found bringing the death toll to 12. >> the victim was wearing a life jacket when her body was found in a narrow passageway. the divers were able to reach the area after holes were blown in the hull to allow access.

the search has been concentrating on the 5th level, which is totally submerged. where passengers would have congregated. divers found a hard drive from tv cameras on the ship's bridge, which may help clarify why the cruise liner hit the reef at more importantly, what the captain said and did before he ran the crippled costa concordia to the ground. the captain on a cell phone told the coast guard he would stay with his ship. when everybody abandoned ship, the reply from the captain contradicts what happened. i will stay here. he did not, and later refused to go back to help stranded passengers. now, oil is leaking from the ship he abandoned. so far, the leaks appear to be from light fuel and lubricants from machinery, rather than heavier fuel oil that would cause a problem.

as desperate as they are to get the fuel off the ship before it leaks, the authorities maintain the priority must be finding the bodies of the missing. most of the massive amount of equipment needed to remove the oil is in place and once the operation begins, it will take several weeks. if the weather is good and the ship doesn't shift position. cbs news, italy. >> south carolina goes to newt gingrich. the former house speaker upset mitt romney, who for weeks before the primary was in the lead. three different men lead three different states in the republican bid for the white house. all eyes are on florida. more on this race that is any man's game. >> newt gingrich is a winner of the south carolina primary. the former house speaker staged a double digit comeback in recent days to beat mitt romney who came in second. >> let me first of all say, thank you to everyone in south carolina who decided to be with

us. >> romney promised supporters a victory in florida which has its primary in ten days. >> we are now three contests into a long primary season. this is a hard fight, because there's so much worth fighting for. >> gingrich won big with last minute voters. more than half of those polls say they made up their mind over the last couple days and 45% voted for gingrich. only 24% finally decided on mitt romney. >> a gingrich victory in south carolina means none of the candidates has won more than one state. iowa was awarded to rick santorum this week and new hampshire went to mitt romney. rick santorum and ron paul finished at the back of the pack, but vowing to fight on. >> there's no doubt in my mind, the momentum has been continuing and will continue. thank you very much. >> let me assure you we will go to florida and everywhere else across the state.

>> florida holds it first debate monday night. danielle nottingham, cbs news, columbia, south carolina. and this programming note, newt gingrich will be his guest tomorrow morning on face the nation. it begins at 8:30 on cbs 5. >> as you heard, it's finally official. rick santorum is the winner of the iowa caucuses. earlier this month, republican party said romney had won by 8 votes. the sweep, he was ahead by 34 votes, but a winner couldn't be determined because eight . there are some decisions no one wants to make. what could be on the chopping block in order to balance the budget. >> you may have been caught in traffic tieups. why thousands in the bay area marched in the streets today. e.

thousands took over the streets of san francisco and oakland to stand up for life. antiabortion activists held rallies all over the west coast. an estimated 50,000 abortion opponents marched down san francisco's market street to justin herman plaza. this event started 2005 and has grown steadily ever since. the main message from the

marchers, abortion verse women. the ruling that gave women the right to have an abortion. and pro-choice advocates held their own smaller rally. this rally was also in san francisco. we talked to women who remember when abortion was illegal and the right to have one must be kept. >> they claim to be pro-life, which maybe we are not. that is not true. i have children. i am very pro-life. i'm just a woman right to choose whatever that choice may be. >> unlike in past years, the two rallies did not confront each other. like many california cities, san jose is facing a big budget short fall this year. the city is turning to neighborhood groups to help them decide where to make the painful, but necessary cuts. ann was there as people weighed in. >> the biggest challenge facing our government is a lack of civic engagement and part of the lack of civic engagement is a lack of true discourse among

people with different points of view. >> this fake money represents the millions of real dollars san jose has to play with. but in real life, there isn't enough to go around and these representing neighborhood groups are in the politician's shoes, deciding what should stay and what can go. >> only through choice do people really understand the decision that elected officials have to make. you can't be everything to everyone. >> the budget challenges here in san jose and in most cities across california are being made worse by a court decision late last year that allows the state to take away local redevelopment funds. this year, san jose is dealing with a $40 million short fall and has to balance the budget by june. >> everybody comes from a slightly different perspective, but public safety, roads, and community service are up. >> this is the second year san jose is working with innovation games which writes an extensive report. last year, it helped the city

decide on cuts to the fire department and put more money into paving roads. >> when we get done with the entire process, i want to make sure the budget we adopt reflects the values and priorities of our community. >> it comes down to the crunches. when it's voting time, it's the hard decision. i applaud them for being here today. that hasn't always been the case. >> in san jose, cbs 5. after a very mild start to winter all across the country, it is finally arrived. mother nature seems to be making up for lost time. >> more than 4 inches of snow fell on new york city, giving plows their first work of the season. in the midwest, 9 inches fell in chicago. snarling traffic and grounding some 700 flights. nearly a quarter million people in the pacific northwest face another cold, dark night after a snow and ice storm this week knocked out power. now rain is drenching the region. triggering the worst flooding oregon has seen in a decade.

and high winds buried these coastal homes with sand. in tahoe, 2 to 3 inches of snow is left behind by the storm that moved through last night. that was enough for chain installers to get back to work. there were several weather related car accidents as well. more showers will linger tomorrow. dry weather is expected to return on tuesday. for a full look at our weather forecast, let's check in with elizabeth. >> rain, snow, we got it all coming. so yeah, what do we have to look forward to? right now we are dry. it's cruising out there right now. dry conditions across the bay area. can't find a rain drop out there. temperatures in the 40s. 45 in vallejo. and 40 degrees right now in napa. for tomorrow, we're going to climb up to the mid 50s, but yes, rain once again returns. we are seeing a dry break right

now. rain, clouds, it could be windy. some points in the mid afternoon. so satellite and radar showing high pressure is in full effect. we are closely watching a low and it is sitting and waiting off to the west of us. we know there's a football game going on tomorrow, so a lot of people -- our forecast models have changed over the last couple of hours. light to moderate by morning and mid afternoon, looks like the kickoff. we could see some light to moderate rain. so you know, rain is going to be the name of the game tomorrow. it will last through sunday evening. the heaviest rain showers are going to be once the game is over. and our forecast models, check out the north bay. some areas expected to see more than 2 inches by monday morning and more than an inch in san francisco. looks like the rain could stick

around. so lows overnight, going to stay on the more mild side. clouds keeping a blanket over the bay area. mostly in the upper 30s to low 40s and once again for tomorrow, temperatures will be mostly in the mid 50s. we have rain and we do have wind expected for tomorrow. boast of them could be factors for tomorrow's game and the game continues. it could get heavy and there's a slight chance of thunderstorms late sunday evening and then we are finally drying out monday afternoon and a dry stretch through the end of the week. i want to talk about this championship football game. looks like it's going to be rainy, light showers on sunday morning. so again, it could affect the tailgaters as well. with temperatures in the mid 50s. >> no one will care about the fact that it rained. >> that's true.

area. ng and dancing, the largest vietnamese new year's celebration outside of vietnam is right here in the bay area. nearly 70,000 people came out to san jose pet festival at the santa clara fair grounds today. it is the celebration of the lunar new year. one of the important holidays in vietnamese culture. it's the 30th year the celebration was held in the south bay. 39 locations at the fair grounds. the new year, by the way, is the year of the dragon. so, the next time you reach for that bottle of vodka, put on a pair of gloves and get a rag. it turns out there's more to vodka than just drinking it. an online editor shares some unusual uses for the alcohol.
