cover in the next half-hour and hour, burt let's get to the top stories. >> breakings news. former penn state football coach has died. he had been suffering from lung cancer. his family says he died this morning. he was 85 years old and the winningest coach in college his ry. he was of course fired in november in the aftermath of that penn state child abuse sex scandal. newt gingrich scrambled the race for president. >> he won south carolina primary with 41% of the vote. that is way ahead of mitt romney who came in second with 27%. >> now, the battle shifts to florida. susan mcguinness joining us with the latest on the campaign. exciting day there yesterday susan. >> reporter: it certainly was. good morning. it was quite a day here in south carolina. yesterday newt gingrich whose candidacy was all but

[ applause ] >> reporter: ron paul has yet to win a primary and finished last in south carolina but says he is not giving up. >> a total of 37 delegates have been chosen so far. less than 2%, like 1 1/2%. this is the beginning. >> the fight moves to a state where big money and a well organized operation could figure into the race, because of florida's size. >> ♪ >> mitt romney is now trying to turn around what is considered one of his bigamies steps here. he will release his tax returns for last year. an estimate for last year and 2010 on this coming tuesday.

numerous shots were fired from multiple guns. police think there were three to four suspects. injuries range from graze wounds, somebody was shot in the abdomen. that is right. the international front, rescue crews are still working. they are back a board the costa concordia. >> this morning, the body of one woman was found in the wreckage. now, the number of people confirmed dead stands at 13. 20 more still missing. welcome back. 8:41 and all eyes on the weather today when it comes to game day at candle stick park. it will be very wet. differing opinions on if that will be an advantage or to the north 49ers but how wet? >> light showers, just a couple hundreds of an inch. enough to create a soggy field and winds will keep things a little cxconf[ly down there. i'm sure. we take a look. expected to continue through the day here and taking a look

a little farther offshore than the golden gate, we see a whole lot of moisture piling up. that is the coast. it will move in and across candlestick within the next hour. this is the tail end of a frontal boundary going by to our north so not a lot of moisture in this but some showers nonetheless. we'll get the bulk of this this evening after the game, but for now we're looking for the rain showers to stay on the light side into and through the early evening with showers beginning this morning. more rain and wind through the night. showers continuing into your monday morning commute. as we see, we still have a high surf advisory up with westerly swell 14 to 18 feet along the coast. high wind advisor but that begins at 10:00 tonight to 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. winds out of the south 20 to 30 miles per hour gusting to 50 but southerly winds will be building through the day as rain and wind develop across

the region. again, this is the last in a series of three fronts for this week. it will be rather weak compared to thursday and friday so rainfall amounts won't be that impressive but they will be here in time for game day showers and the winds will pick up gradually flew the afternoon so it should be make for an interesting afternoon at candlestick. at kickoff time most of the rain stays to the north. across the bay area. a we'll look for that to continue into the early morning hours as once again rainfall will taper off by tomorrow night. a bit of a break then into the rest of the week as temperatures warm gradually here in to next weekend. as mentioned it looks at this point that the game may be a bit squirrelly this afternoon with southerly winds and light rain showers. there you go. >> from squirrely weather to squirrelly. >> thank you, jim.

>> three contests so far in the race for the republican presidential nomination and three different winners. who has the momentum right now? >> a lot may defend who comes out on top in the florida primary. a week from tuesday is when voters will decide on that one. joining us is joe, our political analyst. mitt romney has got, he must be waking up with his staff going they are ham everything me on not releasing my income taxes, my image. 70% of the voters, gop voters said they didn't like me in south carolina and i have to go to florida next. he has to be feeling the heat. >> i think he is. i'll bet he is glad to go list get out of the south carolina. he has more staff in florida. there is more money on his side and it is a fresh race. i have to say, though, we were talking about significance of winning or losing florida and the rest of it. because the florida gop moved

up their primary to run more or less at the same time or close to in time to new hampshire, south carolina was coming next, reno as well, the gop punished them and they will only count half of the delegates so in terms of the actual delegate count that you need to get the nomination, winning or losing this is not a game breaker. the impact of florida primarily will be about perception. that will have an impact in later primaries so it is import to win, but no one delineated i am the front runner so it is up for crashes. >> what do you think happened in south carolina? >> was it the debate? >> newt gingrich gets hit with idea he is proposing an open marriage to his wife and instead newt pops up 20 points.

>> there are a couple things. first santorum didn't get the bounce he would have gotten out of iowa if he would have won until late in the game with south carolina. he wasn't looked at as a i'm a viable person to win in till it was too late. i think the other thing that happened though in this particular race where santorum is concerned, with those evangelical voters, his background is catholic and in some parts of the south there is something about that as well. for an alternative newt was saying things, asking for forgiveness and paying om imagine to their leaders in ways i think the other candidates wouldn't. i think that is why it went to gingrich. >> are we seeing a different republican party? there was a time when we watched these presidentials and you would start with the 8 candidates and then after new hampshire, getting down to

carolina, the forces would come in and say this is about winning in november and that was perceived as romney and then you shave the edges. but now they are saying no. this is about an idea logical people in that party saying no, we believe this. whether we win or lose, this is a set of things we believe and you're not in it. >> well, i think there is something to that without question, but let's remember that at the end of the day, gingrich got a lot of voteds. he didn't win by a little bit in south carolina. he won by a lot. i think by having the court conservative principles, it was important. but i think that the game changer for him outside of getting the evangelical support was a perception that he could be the person who could win. if you look at exit poll research in south carolina where people made up their minds late, who would have a better chance against barack

romney. on tuesday president obama will make his case for a second term in his annual state of the union address. the president has said the speech will be on economic blue print and with ideas for bill ing an economy that works for everyone. he will propose ways to make college education more affordable and address the consistent housing crisis. >> the mayor plans to talk with the city's new sheriff soon about the possibility of stepping aside. this conversation is supposed to go on this weekend. he is concerned about whether he can do his job as sheriff while hee battles these domestic violence charges but he wants it posed to himself. the sheriff pleaded not guilty. >> like many california cities, they are turning to neighborhood groups to see where to make the painful but

necessary cuts. $40million shortfall and has to balance the budget by june. the city is working with the company innovation games to help them decide what can be trimmed by asking people in the community for their opinion. they use this fake money to represent the millions of dollars the city has to play with but in real life there isn't enough to go around. >> only through choices do people really understand the decisions that elected officials ha tough make. you can't be everything to everyone. >> they helped with cuts on the fire department and to put more money into paving roads. >> they could receive a facelift soon and that could result in a new name and even less parking. barts is looking for developers to transform it into on urban hub with shops. also they want to rename the station there.

you happen to be right under those cells. elsewhere around the bay we'll see again rain develop through the day and pick up by tonight with more rain and wind expected through the wee hours of the morning commutes. then a bit of rain. still surf advisory up west of the swell, 14 to 18 feet through 10:00 a.m.. southerly 20 to 30, gusting to 50. that will make squirrely conditions around the bay, but after this front clears the area we'll dry out and the rest of the week. right now wind and rain developing north to south into the bay area this morning and with us on and off through game time. rainfall amounts not very impressive. to 6:00, adjust a few hundreds of an inch of rain, maybe.0s.

even if we see showers continuing through the day and late tonight into early tomorrow, we'll pick up another half of an inch, so an inch across the region that will add to the rainfall totals. with temperatures it mid to low 50s today, on the cool side. looking at the seven-day, showers continue into tomorrow just in time to mess up your commute. then we dry up and we'll carry into next weekend as well. game day forecast, we covered that enough today, to say it is going to be a bit squirrely and weather this afternoon. now, let's check in with a familiar 49erser phil. he knows all about winning super bowl championships. dr. jamie williams. before we get to the big game, you were recruited by coach joe paterno. he passed away. i was wondering what's your thoughts were.

>> well it sounds like -- it feels like a great tragedy because the guy does so much and then goes out this way. he was planning on coaching this next year and then he is no longer with us and he goes out the way that he went out. you know, from my experience with him, he was all about academics and competition and character. truly was like that when i was 18 when i had other coaches selling me snake hole. i think that is how he will be remembered. >> let's move on to today's game. one thing i have wondered about the championship game, whether college or professional, it comes at the end of the season when you guys have been banged up. you're hurting. how do you get up for this final push? >> they call it going through the ship, the championship.

going through the ship. your energy is going. it is all about adrenalin and emotion and what you worked for. you start thinking about those days when you got in trouble because you tore up your new pants and you're playing on the play ground with your buddies and you want to be a football player and now here you are. they are in a championship. then there is another ship. that is the super bowl championship. they are one step away. you knew over time it would happen. this quick? >> it came out of the blue. early on in the season, i don't think anybody was predicting the 49ers were going this far. >> every one thought they would win the nfc west. >> because competition is so poor but no one thought they would get past that. >> i thought this was three years coming. it shows what emotion will do

and what doing little things right will do. the turnover, they lead the league in that. they get the ball back to the offense. give us one more try. and the defense of the 49ers have done it over and over this year. here it is again. here it is again. here it is again. your chances of winning go up expedientially for chances. >> when you're running on adrenalin and you're hurt, how do you stay balanced during these key games and key plays? >> they know exact lay what to do. i see turnovers being an issue. they have been really good the entire year and that is when it sneaks up on you when you have been really good. look at the saints. they had very few turnovers throughout the season and they give up four, five, six against the niners. >> what were your 24 hours before the big game like? >> how did you get yourself

physically, mentally? were youtube able to sleep, eat or are you running on just adrenalin? >> it is hard to sleep. it is very emotional because your mind goes from here to there. you don't want people to call you, because family people come into your life and they want to be there and share it with you and they want tickets and you're going i'm still trying to remember what we put in this week. you want to lock yourself away and visualize. most of these kids -- most of these guys have been taught visual zation. you see it before you do it. all the plays that you go through, you spend the night before seeing yourself making plays, making tackles, making blocks and the guys who do that best, those are the guys that play big on sunday. >> see it, believe it. >> see it and do it. >> thank you. jamie williams, thanks for

game and pre-game, too, so take precautions one way or the other. bring upon cho, that kind of thing i have been a 49ers fan. i used to go to st. mary's college and i used to carry his cleats. when i was six, seven years old, i carried them from the locker room out to the playing field and wait like a little kid and bring them back in the days of john brody and john david crow and i can't wait to watch a little football. i covered the patriots for 16 years out in boston, too, so hopefully it will be the two teams of destiny. tom brady coming home from san mateo to indianapolis to play alex smith and what would be just an unbelievable super bowl but they have a little work to do. giants might have something to say about that. ravens might have to say something about that.
