race, of course. big contest yesterday. first florida, now nevada, and next the white house if mitt romney has his way. >> that is right. last night's caucus slid fies romney's status as the front runner but newt gingrich is defiant and vying to fight onto the end. >> we have doug in las vegas with the latest. doug? >> reporter: yes. we are in the lobby of the desert rose resort in las vegas where they are still counting votes even though the caucus ended about 12 hours ago. i think the lead for newt gingrich willgo grow a few more points but romney says if he clinches the republican presidential nomination, he will be leaving las vegas holding all the cards. >> this is not the first time you gave me your vote of confidence. this time i have to take it to the white house. america need as president who

can fix the economy because he understands the economy, and i do and i will. >> reporter: romney took the mormon vote, a quarter of the electorate, but he beat newt gingrich and ron paul among conservatives and tea partyers and more. he is likely to keep the momentum going now as the campaign moves on to colorado where he will likely win tuesday. >> i am not going to withdraw. i am pretty happy with where we are and i think the contrast between governor romney and me is going to get wider and go wider. >> reporter: in his lead over gingrich and paul and the gap between him and the other nominees and contenders in the delegate count as the primary race moves on. mitt romney looks like it is all going his way, phil and an. >> thank you, doug.

>> closer to home, no major acts of violence by occupy protestors during a march against police in oakland. that is refreshing to report. about 70 people tried to walk last night from city hall to police headquarters. a line of officers blocked the path on broadway, so the protestors marched down other downtown streets, instead. the march continued for two ours -- two hour, but nobody was arrested compared to 400 arrests last weekend. and last night, though, several protestors threw plastic bottles at members of the media on 14th street. our photographer snap add photo of one of the bottles, and police say they contained what may have been urine. yea! and some protestors threw sharp pieces of wood at the crews, but no media property was damaged. well, in the brian stowe

beating case, his family sued the dodgers team last year after being beaten outside the stadium, alleging the team didn't provide adequate security. but the prosecutors allege there is no connection between the beating and stadium security. well, this evening the giants and patriots will be playing the super bowl live in indianapolis. >> yes. we have karen live there with more. >> reporter: the volunteers are showing up at the stadium behind me which will open five hours before game time. i am told by one ticket broker, two-thirds of the tickets are going to giants fans. they have a leg up because many of the colts fans in indianapolis don't like new england because of the conference rivalry, but if you ask las vegas, they still

interest the patriots by 3. the kick-off for super bowl xlvi is now just hours away. giants fans promise a win. >> victory. we are taking victory. >> reporter: but patriots supporterrers are confident their team will finish on top. about a thousand police officers and other law enforcement are working to keep indianapolis secure this weekend and it seem to be working. the city's public safety director says so far the biggest problem has been children who temporarily get separated from their parents. more than a dozen fans were bumped and bruised when 200,000 people packed into super bowl village for a concert friday night. but all the injuries were minor. >> the safety is of utmost concern and they have done a great job at that. >> reporter: the zip line is a big hit, and those who live in indianapolis say the city is showcasing itself well in the

national spotlight. this is the first time indianapolis has hosted the super bowl. >> i am excited to see the hoosiers hospital. i think it is really nice that -- hospitality. i think it is nice that we have gotten all the compliments of how kind and welcoming we are. >> reporter: the city is cashing in on a chunk of the record $11 billion that fans across the country are expected to spend as they enjoy pro- football's greatest game. and speaking of cashing in, we saw a sign for a parking lot that last night was $20. today it is $200 to park in a dirt parking lot. there is a lot of talk about what kind of records could be made today, if new england wins, tom brady would match bradshaw and montana's record of four super bowl wins. if the giants win, conklin, the coach, at # 5, would become the oldest coach to ever win a super bowl.

reporting live in indianapolis, karen brown. back to you. >> we know it wouldn't be a big game without scalpers. how much are tickets going for right now? >> reporter: ann, on the high end tickets are going for $7,000. >> woe! >> reporter: on the low end you can get a bargain of $1,400 for one of the worst seats in the stadium. that is the bargain price at the moment. he is saying during big event likes this, folks need to be careful of the stall uppers because they have been -- scalper, because they have been able to duplicate the tickets, and they spent $1,400, which i can't even imagine, and they get to the gates and it is not a real ticket. >> that would be really painful. >> reporter: exactly. >> karen brown live in indianapolis. thank you! okay. an analysis by an outside firm says san jose could get by with fewer police officers and

firefighters than they had been thinking. ibm says police could cut around 400 jobs and save as much as $60 million a year by increasing productivity. and mayor chuck reid who has been raising questions about the pensions for police and fire requested the study and he plan to discuss it on wednesday with city council committee. and meanwhile, across the bay, the east bay, the city of hercules will be in close sections tuesday apparently to discuss a lawsuit against the city. ambeck insurance company sued the city after backing out on a bond agreement. eight sailors have been discharged for hazing a new recruit on bored a navy ship. the sailor was choked and beaten as part of a initiation right. this follows a congressional

hearing on the topic of hazing in the military which following an agent corporal who killed himself after being taunted and beaten while stationed in afghanistan. you are looking at hundreds of demonstrators. they have been on the streets of several syrian cities after government shellings. the forces killed over 200 people firing mortars and artillery. hillary clinton called for friends of syria to work with the government. a full day and two full nights of snow left people socked in with snow drifts more than eight feet high in the denver, colorado area. but now, with the snow heading east, all airports are expected to be back up and running. well, we will interest is

be? jim bernard that is weather. it looks like a day to get off the boat here as we see lovely spring weather across the bay. very light and variable winds as we check again across the bay. you can see as this lovely day takes shape, the light offshore winds will keep skies clear and shift suddenly by tomorrow. sunny and warm this afternoon. chances of light showers and increasing cloud cover move into the area tomorrow into tuesday. we could see sprinkles for the tuesday morning commute, but at this point it doesn't look like a big rainmaker for us. we will see moderate air quality today throughout the bay as high pressure continues to stay parked over the region and the stagnant air pattern results leaving us with mostly clear skies. the storm pattern brings stalls out to the west, north to oregon, and we will see the southern end of it clip the bay area tomorrow night to tuesday

then slide south through the afternoon. tuesday clearing out by pennsylvania morning and maintaining the clearing trend through next weekend, as well. light offshore breezes. sunny and mild today. upper 60s to low 70s for the warmer locations, which shouldn't set records. cloudy and cooler come the beginning of the week with a slight chance of showers north to south for late monday night to early tuesday. here you see the rain pooling up early tuesday morning, then, boom, it has gone out of here by tuesday afternoon. the drying pattern will continue through the end of the week. temperatures today mainly in the upper 60s. a few low 70s possible. interesting the records for the date mid to low 70s set last year on this day. a carbon copy of what we saw last year here, a lovely february day as it unfolds, mid to low 60s at the beach and we will look for the friend to cool into the week as we see a

slight chance of showers creeping into the picture early tuesday morning, leaving us high and dry for the end of the week and into if not through next weekend. we could be talking light rain by sunday. at this point we don't see any major rainmakers on the horizon, so, we will stay with a dry and mild pattern for the foreseeable future. >> thank you, jim. well on friday the labor department said the u.s. unemployment rate jobbed to 8.3% in january. ployers added a net 243,000 jobs for the month. >> the question is if the trend continues, how will improving the economy affect the presidential campaign? joining us is joe tuman, our political analyst. it was the economy that got romney, right? >> yes. it was the economy that helped i am, you mean? >> yes. >> yes. if you want to select somebody on the republican side to go

against president obama, you can pick somebody that can speak to his weakness or a growing strength to the president, which is the economy. >> if the numbers improve, how will it help president obama? >> hugely, and maybe in this way. the more the employment numbers trend in the right way -- and by the way, it is a modest increase. not a big increase that he wants. it looks then to be an unemployment issue for voters in the fall. it is not the only issue they will be voting on, but the more the number comes down, the less focus people have on the issue, in november, not now. and the more the president can focus on other things which is reminding us he got osama bin laden to trump at the case and say he deserves another term. the republicans are nominating somebody like in 2004, like democrats did, john kerry, based on wartime credentials. republicans are trying to

nominate someone with strong economic credentials to run against a president who had a bad economic record up to this point. maybe it will be neutral or a little better until fall. >> that is what this race is all about. when we talk to people, you talk to swing voters. it is about the economy and it is about leadership. >> yes. >> economic reports come and go. it is about whether your job is doing okay or your kids job, or your wife's jepp. that is the economic indicator. that is not going to change that much between now and november. >> no. >> it will be about jobs and the economy, right? >> it will be, but i think the singular focus on that would be greater in the fall if the numbers don't dramatically change, right? or if it actually trends back the other direction, right? >> yes. >> but the more this start to come down, the more it allows obama to point to other things he can run on, and/or for

republicans to look for another issue to dash him with. then it becomes a question of incustom balancey advantage. if the president is neutral, the advantage of income bancy is possible, why do you want me to waste four years of investing to bring someone new in. in most cases the incumbent has the upper hand and president obama is a skilled campaigner. he will not say goofy things like what mitt romney said when he made the misstatement saying he doesn't ware care about poor. and he won't make mistakes like newt gingrich when he says he is about to get and endorsement from donald trump and trump shows up and endorses romney. so, romney will have to be disciplined in his message. if you don't have a big issue

to go after the president with like unemployment, you have to have all the other things going for you. it is an uphill fight for you. he can do it, but i am saying the advantage is still with the president. >> gingrich says he will go all the way to the convention in august. i don't know if we believe it, but are we calling it for mitt at this point, do you think? >> this is still a race that has a long way to go. the delegates we have seen accumulated through this is a small percentage of what romney or anybody else would need to win. whoever, winning the primaries, these first ones, have a perception on who is a viable candidate. that gives you is credential to ask people to give you big pots of money, from super packs, to people contributing bigger amounts of money to the campaign, and people live like santorum, ron paul and

gingrich, the more they don't win the race, the more they are making the argument they are not viable. so, in a sense, even though it is too soon to say it is mitt romney's, it hurts the ability of others to raise money. if they can't raise money, they can't hire organizations to compete in other states. they have to win somewhere else. pgh and how many days are you giving rick santorum? >> i can say rick santorum can last until super tuesday which is march 6th. i think he will pick hit date. this week he didn't bother with nevada. he is hanging in missouri, even though it is a non-binding race. he may hang out until march 6th ron paul will go all the way since he doesn't have much of a staff to deal with and he is low cost. beginning beginning, i think, we will have to see. newt gingrich, we will have to see. >> all right. we will be right back.

welcome back. okay. there has been a new analysis by an outside firm that says san jose could get by with fewer police and firefighters. >> ibm says police could cut around 400 jobs and save as much as $60 million by increasing productivity. the mayor chuck reid requested the study and plan to discuss it on wednesday with a city council committee. and in the east bay, the hercules city council will meet in a closed session tuesday to discuss a lawsuit against the city. amback corporation sued hercules after the city announced it would default on a bond interest payment of more than $2 million. the court hearing is on february 21st. in other bay area headline, beginning tomorrow, the city of alameda will become part of the

food truck revolution. earlier this year they adopted a set of health and safety rule to level the playing field between food trucks and traditional restaurants. food truck owners will have to obtain permits and pay local taxes. today san francisco owner, ed lee, is making good with new york mayor michael bloomburg. he promised if they beat the 49ers in the championship, which they did, he would outfit a cable car with blue and green flags. it did, in fact, run yesterday and today, super bowl sunday. ouch! well, what are we looking like weather-wise? jackets, looks like we will shed them this afternoon? >> indeed, as we see the spring pattern continues through the day. temperatures-wise will be warmer than yesterday. just a couple of degree, putting us in the mid to upper 60s for most locations. could see a few low 70s out

there. you can see a lovely start to the day. the winds are switching to the south, southwest here through the day, back to an on shore breeze ushering in a week frontal system tuesday, bringing a chance of light showers to the area. sunny and warm through the afternoon as we look for another lovely day in and around the bay. temperatures, as mentioned, in the mid to upper 06s across the bored. could see a -- 60s across the board. could see some low 70s, too, across the high pressure system from the west, keeping the storm track to the north and holding it offshore. monday night to tuesday we will see this energy crossing to bay. it will be moving rapidly from north to south. could leave light showers in its path, mainly half an inch across the bay, up to an inch for some locations for your tuesday morning commute. inbetween, we can expect light breeze to continue. sunny and mild through the day. southwesterly winds picking up

through the day that will add to the warm feel in the air out there as we get the south l breeze into the area. cloudy and cooler beginning tomorrow. that chance of showers showing up late monday night into early tuesday morning for your tuesday commute. then this system will slide south into southern california and be out of here by tuesday night to wednesday. the rainfall amounts pretty light here, crossing the bay monday to tuesday. mr. clouds than rain at this -- more clouds than rain at this point, but we will pick up sprinkles, unless, temperature-wise, upper 60s today. low 70s here and there. mid to low 70s are the records set last year across the bay area. as we look for temperatures to cool into the beginning of the week here as we see the next system approach 2 region, and will bring us a change in the graphic, which is not going to happen. we will go with the seven-day forecast at this point look to

and adventure capitalists in the bay area will have the ability to cash out. they invested a small amount of money in a lot of time over the last seven or eight years or so, and now they are able to cash out by selling share to the general public. >> this is a phenomenon. facebook is a social network, but does it make money? yes, it does make money. it made about a billion dollars a last year, which works out to about a dollar per user. it is only just beginning to figure out how to make money. they are in the early stages of learning what social networking is and how it can be monetized. >> unlike the phone company when it started where you had lines and phones and people paying for the service, or even verizon and sprint of today, this is freely offered to the public. so, what you are selling is access to the public and information about the public. it seems like an odd product to be bringing in this money.

it is proportionate, or are we seeing a boom-bust type economy? >> it is like google. they know about you because of your searches. facebook know about you because of your personal preferences, your "likes" and who you socialize with. the more traffic they can drive through facebook by getting you to search through facebook, getting you to download music and video through facebook, the more they will know about you. >> it is a delivery service. my question is, when we have these things that go out for offerings, how much of it is real and how much of it is just betting on some future that you have to be defined? >> i think we are in a different era than in 1999 where people would be willing to take a company public that was vague and february land. nowadays the business model is fairly mature by the time it get to this process, so, there is a lot of controversial over what facebook is worth.

everybody agrees it is a real business and it makes money, although its future is not certain. >> there are a lot of fly by night companies, like amazon, if you had invested a $1 at the i, o, -- ipo, it is worth $150 now. there are successful and dubious idea that is are successful and dramatically so. >> is this a health i way for our economy in the bay area to

be hanging its placement on? or is it a roll of the dice? >> i think it is very healthy. this is the future of the economy. this is the future of business, and it is an enormous amount of money that will be drawn from all around the world into the bay area. >> and where does that money go? does it stay in the bay area or get farmed out to china or something? >> good-bye has about 3,000- plus employees. it is not the kind of wealth creation that you may have seen with a steel plant. but the money does come into the area and percolate through. and there are countless other business models that will grow, lining zynga, around the facebook platform. >> thank you. we appreciate it. and coming up, the 49ers are moving to santa clara. our political insiders take a look at that room the nfl gave
