you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news on the cw. >> at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon, whitney houston was pronounced dead at the beverly hilton hotel. >> whitney houston, one of the biggest selling artists of the 80s and 90s dies in her hotel room in los angeles a. blow to the music world on the eve of the grammy's. ♪ [ music ] she was considered one of the greatest singers in the music business selling nearly 200 million albums worldwide. everyone from aretha franklin to the man discovered her, clive davis, shocked at the death of whitney houston at the age of 48. following the developing story for us and he is live at beverly hills hotel where houston was found dead. >> reporter: on the eve of one of the biggest nights in music. one of its biggest voices.

whitney houston is gone. she was declared dead here at the beverly hilton hotel where she was supposed to attend a pregrammy party. now her body remains on the fourth floor. >> whitney houston was america's sweetheart. inspiring a generation of younger singers. her life came to an abrupt end here at beverly hilton. she was pronounced dead in her room on the 4th floor. >> we have no obvious signs. too fresh and currently being investigated. our detectives are upstairs right now. >> houston was scheduled to attend a pregrammy party. hosted by clive davis, the music director who discovered her. >> whitney first started singing in church, later doing backup vocals for artists like germaine jackson. ♪ [ music ] 1985 self-title debut album was a hit factory and sold

millions. the song, saving all my love for you, got houston her first grammy for best female pop vocal. she went on to become one of the top artists. with more than 55 million records sold in the u.s. alone. houston gave a rousing rendition of the star spangled banner in 1991. her talent even expanded to the big screen. movies like the body guard, which featured her hit remake, i will always love you. but houston's professional successes were tempered by personal turmoil, like her marriage to bobby brown. the pair divorced in 2007 and share a daughter, bobby christina. houston had an on going battle with drugs. she admitted to abusing cocaine and pills. her voice showed the trouble, turning raspy and low. >> she lost a quality to her voice. she hasn't lost her artistic

instinct. >> houston went to rehab and declared herself drug-free in 2010. but there were missed concert dates. houston's death came on the eve of the biggest night in music, the grammy awards. and grammy organizers and top performers spent the last few days hammering out and rehearsing every moment of tomorrow night's show. but as you might imagine, that rundown is changing. we just learned that jennifer hudson will perform a tribute at tomorrow night's show. remembering the woman who gave music and so much. >> let me ask you, are her fans outside the hotel? what is going on out there? >> yeah, really within the last ten minutes, we have seen several fans. a group of a dozen or so come out in front of the hotel where again, whitney houston's body is still here on the fourth floor and they came out with candles and singing some of her top hits. sold over 55 million records. >> reporting live from los

angeles. thank you very much. well, the year of the dragon roared into san francisco tonight on a beautiful, rain-free evening. don knapp with the lunar new year parade. one of the biggest in the world. >> fire crackers by the tens and thousands brighten evil spirits near the climax of the chinese new year parade. there were dragons of plenty to mark the year of the dragon and among dragons, this is a 250- footer carried by 100 men and women of martial arts group. earlier, the first of 100 floats, bands, drummers, martial arts groups moved down market street.

people line the entire route supposedly in the hundreds of thousands according to promoters. the numbers encouraged by some of the best weather in years for the winter parade. san francisco's chinese new year parade is built as the largest event of its kind in the world. and san francisco quoted with people seeking their fortunes. they wanted a way to celebrate their culture and share it. now it's a huge event for san francisco and for the tourists it draws from across the country and overseas. the san francisco don knapp, cbs 5. >> hundreds showed up at a hiring frenzy at six flags in vallejo. the park is looking to fill 1300 positions for the summer. the jobs are normally taken by teenagers looking for summer work, but as ann shows us, those teens have competition from adults desperate for work. >> the line stretched around

the building, almost 1,000 people hoping to work at six flags discovery kingdom. >> i stand out from the pack. >> among the hundreds of teenager, the usual hires at the theme park, people like 52- year-old scott anderson. >> i have a degree and i got certificates. >> and 35-year-old joe hoping for a job. >> anything that will get me. i'll shovel up animal turds if i have to. >> not necessarily his first choice of work. >> i have 15 plus years in the trade doing remodeling and new construction. but when the economy kind of took a dive, i couldn't find anything. i lost my job. it's been real tough. >> while the numbers of out of work adults increase, so does the competition for typical teenagers. >> i've been looking for a job since 2010 and you know, i'm 18. i'm going to be 19 pretty soon. it's ridiculous that my age

group has not had any jobs available for any of -- especially in vallejo. there's nothing out there. >> she's willing to do just about anything at the park. >> had a tremendous turnout. it's almost overwelming in the long run. we get the best people we get to work. >> people for whom low wage seasonal work would be a luxury at this point. >> it's why i wear shades and a black suit. i get depressed about it. i am striving hard to do it. >> and discovery kingdom is working hard to hire more people. you can go to our website and click on links and numbers. in fair field, cbs 5. >> students have nowhere to go these days as in, to the bathroom. less the restrooms at the campus have been locked since last year. the principal won't say why, but a school district official says it's because of graffiti. only one boy and one girls restroom has been open, but

this week a second pair was unlocked. the school has 1400 students. the locked restrooms may violate the state's education code. toll takers at the golden gate bridge could be a thing of the past. a so-called soft launch takes effect. all toll takers will be off the bridge by this time next year. 35 toll takers lose their jobs and that move will help reduce the bridge district's $87 million short fall. other bay area headlines, a 21-year-old man killed in a drive by shooting in pleasant hill. it happened after 10:00 last night in a neighborhood described as a quiet bedroom community. police say the victim was standing outside a house with a grown up of people when several shots were fired. witnesses say the suspects were in a blue saturn view. no one else was injured. >> marin county has something most state and local

governments can only dream of. extra cash. the county has $14.8 million more than expected. part of the money will be used to pay down pension debt. half of the money will be saved to finance high priority things in the future. >> and banana sam will be back. the squirrel monkey gained national attention when he was stolen over the new year's weekend. sam has been quarantined for a month after he was found in the bushes near the zoo. apparently unharmed. police say the investigation into his abduction is still open. zoo officials, zoo visitors bring a valentine to welcome sam back this weekend will get $1 off admission. >> when the biggest names in music takes the stage tomorrow, there will be at least two for the bay area. local musicians nominated for music's highest honor. >> i believe i'm the one person in this race that can beat the president. >> mitt romney ends a losing

republican presidential nomination. to mitt romney has another victory under his belt in the race for the republican presidential nomination. today he won the nonbinding maine caucuses. randall shows us it was hardly the big victory he hoped for. >> mitt romney ended his losing streak saturday night with a narrow victory in maine's republican caucuses. >> i believe i'm the one

person in this race that can beat the president. >> romney stepped up his campaign after three losses in missouri, minnesota, and colorado. but ron paul came in a close second. 36% to romney's 39. >> i wished all the caucus -- >> paul expressed disappointment that only a portion of the state's caucuses counted toward the total. >> we lost by 190 votes. it's almost like we could call it a tie. >> all the candidates portray themselves as the most conservative option for change in washington. but one contender may still have work to do to convince the conservative base. >> romney is clearly the established republican candidate. he has been campaigning for six years and yet he doesn't present any bold or new ideas. >> a big sincerity gap. >> and a former straw poll in washington backed romney 38%. rick santorum got 31%. former alaska governor, sarah

palin, was the final speaker at the convention, energizing the gop base. >> whoever our nominee is, we must work together to get him over the finish line. >> conservative republicans wrapped up their convention not yet united by hind a single candidate. but determined to defeat president obama. randall pinkston, cbs news, washington. and here in california, the state's democrats are meeting in san diego this weekend. the party celebrated nancy pelosi's 25 years in congress. she was among the speakers along with governor jerry brown and other california elected officials. pelosi said it could help democrats win back control of the house. >> time to send a clear message across our state and to the rest of the country that california stands with the democrats. we have the party of medicare, medicaid, social security, and healthcare as a right, not a

26, 1988 and is still going strong. in fact, 2011 was the show's highest earning year. the "new york times" says it earned $845 million last year. historic performance included a giant cake. she has some rain in the forecast. we need to pay attention. >> that's right. by the end of the weekend, so yeah, for tonight though, it's been a pretty nice night. if you were out at the parade, remained dry. here's a look at current conditions over the bay area. temperatures outside right now mostly in the upper 40s to low 50s. 50 right now in vallejo. looks like san rafael coming in at 52 degrees. snow overnight tonight. we're expecting the clouds to roll in. it's going be on the cooler side and we could see some fog in our north and east bay valleys. temperatures mostly in the valleys. for tomorrow, we'll see a mix

of sun and clouds. temperatures mostly going to be in the upper 50s, but we could squeeze out a couple low 60s. mostly bay and inland. all right, checking our future cast. we are expecting rain. so for tonight overnight, just some clouds. by tomorrow evening, likely around 6:00 or 7:00, that's when we are expecting the rain to come across the bay area. it looks like it's continuing overnight and remains unsettled throughout the day on monday. so it looks like the morning commute, at least, could be a wet one. overnight lows, mostly going to be in the upper 30s to low 40s. 43 as well in san rafael and 47 degrees in san francisco. pinpoint forecast for tomorrow, a mostly, seasonal, maybe cooler tomorrow than we saw today. 59 in vallejo. once again, a few 60s. 60s in fremont. checking the forecast. partly to mostly cloudy skies tomorrow and then by sunday

evening, again, likely thinking about 6:00 or 7:00, that's when we are expecting light rain to move through the bay area and it will remain unsettled. partly cloudy skies for the remainder of the week. some of our computer models do show a slight chance of rain on tuesday night into wednesday. but we are putting a slight chance in there tomorrow. if you have valentine's plans, for the most parted, it is staying dry. partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the 50s. >> tuesday night, another important forecast. >> i know, it is. >> big valentine's plans? >> no. >> thank you much. >> it's the first law enforcement agency in the country to do such a thing. officers met to discuss what everyone wants to see. >> i should keep it on the down low.
