re-opened about three hours. how caltrans made quic more than a day ahead of schedule. the upper deck of the bay bridge reopened about three hours ago. how cal tran will be meeting quick work of their latest project. a mid-air collision between a helicopter and small plane. two people sent to the hospital. it kept her on top of the avalanche and basically saved her life. >> the device one skiier used to help her survive an avalanche while three other people were killed. ing good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. at 7:30 tonight, the first cars crossed the upper deck of the bay bridge with a police escort. the westbound direction was suppose to be closed until 5:00 a.m. on tuesday morning, but one major factor allowed crews to get done way ahead of college.

breathing a sigh of relief after the monumental traffic jam. the westbound bridge is open again 34 hours ahead of schedule. don knapp is live. >> reporter: almost as usual, but not everybody knows about it. traffic is wizzing on by behind us. it's a real nice surprise for motorists. those using the traffic jam bridge to get around. good weather, we were told that good weather would play a role. well it certainly did as far as the contractors were concerned when the job got done. many of the drivers are are lining up at the toll plaza at 7:15. then they expected to be here. despite lots of hints. the work on the bridge was going much faster than anticipated. they were stuck with their 5:00 a.m. reopening on the westbound lanes until late in the day. then at 5:00 p.m., they broke the good news.

the >> the bring is going to open at 7:00 tonight. when i say that, we'll begin picking up cones at 7:00 tonight. >> reporter: that's nearly a day and a half ahead of schedule thanks to contractors around the bay area. that and good weather too. by 7:00 p.m., crews and equipment were gone. the road paveed and striped, ready and waiting. chp officers held traffic for a few more minutes. but in no time, traffic was back to normal. here's work on the the bridge that we have seen on -- on the bridge that we have seen on chopper 5 later this afternoon. the painting of traffic lanes were on the new detour. the alteration, move the road that moves westbound traffic. about 40 feet south to allow for work where the new bridge will touch down while keeping traffic flowing. the second mostly sunny day will be letting the cal tran crews and contractors make a lot of head waves and save a lot of time with 40 separate closures in vanish of the

opening. >> painting and electrical and rubbing and landscaping and a bunch of different things have been completed. months of work that would have had to have happened over a period of time was done in three days. >> reporter: and because of that, the final completion of the new bay bridge should come in as much as six months to a year earlier than schedule. now, ann, i should add that those of us that drive around the bay area, every time the bridge has been shutting down for repairs like that, we'll gain a new appreciation for it. >> we certainly do. don knapp at the toll plaza in oakland, thank you. earlier today, the closure of the upper deck of the bay bridge lead to massive gridlock all over the bay area. traffic was backed up on the richmond bridge. lanes from there to 101 south were all clogged. the golden gate bridge which is normally heavy on the weekend was bumper to bumper. public transportation was not any easier. they complained there were not

enough trains. well, a large middle viewing dangling on top of the bank of america bank downtown san francisco has been taken down. earlier today the crane broke leaving the precuriously dangling over california street. five blocks were closed while crews got the box down. well, a mid-air collision tonight between a small plane and a helicopter. believe it or not, both pilots survived. it happened around 7:00 near the rio vista municipal airport. >> reporter: well ann, it was still preliminary information that we're getting from the faa, but yes, a small plane, a beach craft bonanza that hit thathelicopter midair over the air space. the chopper did go down into a

field about eight miles south of the airport. the pilot only had minor injuries, but refused treatment on the scene. in the meantime, the beach craft landed just short of the byron airport about 20 miles south of where that chopper finally landed. sheriff deputies tell us that, you can see them walking towards that aircraft. south along the airport in the darken area where we don't have access to. it's unclear how many people were on board the small airplanes. no injuries there. tonight, the faa and the national transportation safety board says it will be investigated. >> all right, thank you much. well, neighbors in one county community are questioning the increase in the number of the massage parlors in their city. now, they believe that something shady is going on in them. that could be gone with with them doing about it. >> well, it's hard to know what's going on. >> reporter: the windows are

covered, the signs are neon, providing massage. >> how far does it go? >> reporter: these are the questions that neighbors are asking in lafayette after a few new businesses with them moving on into town. >> i do notice that there is only, well, male customers. hi, my name is ann, i'm with channel 5. >> reporter: when i rang the bell, the woman who answered said she would be happy to have more of a female clientele. her husband came to back her up. >> we're just trying to run the business. come on inside. >> okay, great. >> she gave us a tour of the facility. saying everyone that works for him is a certified therapist and they signed this paper saying they are not allowed to do anything illegal. his wife even teared up, telling a story about a man who offered her a tip in exchange for extra work. >> okay. i would like a bigger tip. >> because she worked so hard and gave him a good massage, a legal massage. >> reporter: now, several

neighbors are very upset about these businesses came here last week to ask the city council to amend that municipal code to regulate the massage parlor. they will take it under consideration can. now, they welcome in that area. they have only had the business for two weeks before being runed by another owner. >> we are losing our customer base. now, if there was a bad clientele coming here before, we don't want them here anyway. >> hopefully somehow, they could shake it out and find out. mainly so did the other neighborhoods. >> reporter: cbs5. an avalanche in washington state has killed three people at a popular ski area. the stevens pass ski area received 21 inches of snow the night before. there's a high risk of slides because of the dry winter. several groups were skiing on the backside of the mountain.

most were able to free themselves from the snow. >> you're skiing at your own risk. we were told that they were very experienced. they knew what they were doing, the choices that they were making. >> reporter: one woman who survived the slide was using the avalanche rescue system. similar to the air bag like the one seen in this video. officials say that it kept her on top of the avalanche. basically they helped save her life. the senior whitney houston was buried today during a private ceremony in her home state of new jersey. and the quiet burial follows the star-studded funeral yesterday. they will bring you some great thoughts from fans. >> reporter: it was whitney houston's last journey home, including a gold hearse made it from newark to the ceremony. they escorted the procession

the white house. gas is now the costly price ever. the national average of $3.56 per gallon. that's up $0.40 in a year. whit johnson explains what that means during the presidential election year. >> reporter: amid rising gas prices, republican presidential hopefuls have a new line of attack. >> this president's anti- american energy. >> reporter: newt gingrich was quick to point out that the price of a gallon of gas is now $1.64 higher since the day president obama took office. >> so what i can guarantee you that the obama program is higher prices, more dependency in the middle east. exactly the wrong direction. >> reporter: at the tea party event yesterday, rick santorum hammered the president for blocking the keystone pipeline. expected to bring crews to the u.s. gulf coast. >> also some opportunities for us to be more energy dependent. what does he say?

pacifica northwest is slowly sinking south. as it does, it will bring the light rain with it. you can see right now, that the radar is picking up just a few showers. still north of the bay area. it's not amounting to too much. as you look at the high definition doppler, not much to say. no echos around the bay area. you'll need to wait a little while. this is how we sit now. as we run this ahead, look at all the rain coming. there's not much is there? this won't be too much. a few lite showers towards the sunrise tomorrow morning. we'll start off cloudy and wet. a few hundreds of an inch of rain. on the chillier side. and then the high pressure will be building up over the pacific big time. tomorrow, we'll be be looking at temperatures in the 50s. 56 degrees here. the mountain view. 60 degrees. 60 degrees in san jose. 55 at fairfield and napa under mostly cloudy skies. and then watch what happens. that will be the high pressure building on in. so by tuesday, it will all turn
