3.29. right now in california the average price is 4.25 compare today 3.65 this time last year. souring gas prices are becoming a major issue in the presidential campaign. to says there is no magic bullet to bring prices down but republicans blame the obama administration. who is really behind the price spike, done? >> reporter: it's complicated. when it comes to gas prices the laws of supply and demand don't apply. supplies are adequate and demand is down. gas prices are climbing daily. what is behind it? after all, u.s. demand is down and every week for the last 48 weeks, demand has dropped. it's 5.7% below last year at this time. prices are up. >> i've been price shopping gas for days and forgot to get it

and makes lot of money. >> specklators are the problem adding $20 a barrel to the cost of oil that equates to 50 cents a gallon of gas. he says two thirds of all oil traded is bought. >> right now that's the cheapest thing on the board for specklators and investors. they say it will get more expensive and they will get in now. >> reporter: by one calelation if gasoline goes up 1 dollar a gallon the typical household will lose what it gained by the payroll tax cut. the headliner at the state republican convention brought his own guest speaker today. newt gingrich pulled in the star power of former rival herman cain. gingrich is in last place in the polls of california voters but as dan reports, many state re-pub danes haven't made up their minds. minds. >> reporter: gingrich was the key speaker and polling low.

heat. >> i think santorum wishes he could take back what he said and talked about how he voted for things because he took one for the team. the team has got to be the people of america. >> it is laughable to have someone suggest i'm not the conserve tiff in -- conservative in the race. >> police say an armed man that barricaded himself in an apartment forced the lockdown of a south stan fran neighborhood was enraged by a recent firing. the 22-year-old walked into his workplace with three friends and started a fight. during a scuffle with employees who were protecting a manager, one suspect fired shots. nobody was and the suspects ran. they tracked the car to a

nearby apartment. >> we determined one of the possibly involved subjects was at that location and as a result, there is a search there of the residents. >> he surrendererred peacefully. velasquez and one other man are expected to be charged. a security scar at an airport as the tsa investigates why a metal detector. terminal b wasn't closed after five were suspected of going through unscreened. the detector was unattended for less than a minute. turns out the passengers did go through the metal detect tores. two have been removed. the incident caused 12 flights to be delayed. admitting to throwing

rocks at cars and more. in one instance a large rock went through a house and hit a wall next to a child's crib. nobody was hurt in any incidents. the teens face vandalism charges. the top commander recalled all international ministers from afghan for the first time on a decade long war. the move comes after a shooting death of two american military advisors in a heavily guarded building. who is claiming responsibility for that attack? >> the shooting inside afghanistan should have been the most secure location in the building. sources say the two american officers a kernel and major were shot in the head with a pistol at close range. witnesses heard three shots. a colleague ran to the command center finding the two dead. the gunmen had disappeared.

weapons. : former south african president is said to be doing well in the hospital tonight. he's there for a preplanned visit for a persistent stomach ailment. the exact nature is not known. doctors are satisfied with the results of diagnostic tests performed today and that he is expected to be okay. the 93-year-old should be out of the hospital within the next day or so. as if the pain at the pump wasn't enough you may have to pay more to ride bart. it's port of the policy of regularly scheduled increases. what remains to be scene is just how much. bart officials are looking at three options, an inflation based increase of 1 and a half percent that would add from 0 to 15 cents to every ride raising the cost of trans bay only ride or each trip by a nickel. a fond farewell to a life changing spot in san francisco.

the anthony's foundation dining room opened the doors for the final time today. the nonprofit organization provided meals for those in need since 1950. guests were invited to paint the walls, contribute to a time cap sole and do demolition work. >> when folks walk through the doors they know they are welcomed and accepted as they are and we always welcome them back and want them to -- whatever they need to help them get back on their feet again. >> anthonys will continue offering thousands of meals each day and an interim dining room. a new dining room is expected to be opened during the summer of 2014. as she said, it's getting chilly and real cold in the last day or so. >> i know. so much for the 70s. >> yeah. >> we saw, what a difference a week or a day makes. it was colder today.

temperatures 10 to 15 colder today than yesterday. and they will continue to dip overnight. the temperatures outside right now mostly in the 40s. a couple of low 50s. 51 oakland and 47 concord. so across the bay, not too bad. 47 and 51 in oakland and 47 out in liver more but overnight tonight it's going to get chilly especially some of the interior valleys. temperatures could get -- near freezing in some spots. so 31 and 43 across the bay. so mostly and our winds will die down as well. for tomorrow partly cloudy and stay dry the bulk of the day. late sunday night we'll see a slight chance of rain. look at the satellite and radar. high pressure will build today but we do have this low and it's just to the northwest of us. so we are keeping a slight chance of rain in the overnight sunday into monday for the bay area. so checking the future cast over the next 72 hours or so, this is

light rain. not much moisture in this at all. so freezing time 3:00 a.m. on monday and you can see some scattered showers here trying to push towards the bay but for the most part anything we get is overnight and monday by the afternoon pretty much looks dry. we're watching a second storm system that looks like it could be promising in terms of the amount of rain we could get. we'll talk about that coming up. in the meantime the pinpoint forecast, lows overnight in the low 30s to low 40s across the bay area and then your highs for tomorrow going to feel chillier for sure. mostly 50s. 55 and 58 in concord and maybe squeeze out a 60 or two. 61. so check in the forecast over the next several days. we are going to keep a slight chance of light rain. i got to emphasize light rain on sunday into monday. but then on tuesday it looks like we'll stay dry into tuesday night into wednesday and a second storm system and that system could bring us possibly up to an inch of rain in some spots and drying out and once
