to be dry. in many parts of the bay area, especially the santa cruz mountains, the ground is still wet >> there's some much moisture in the soil that any wind will bring the trees over. the soil is very unstable right now >> early this morning at 100 ft. redwood tree fell across highway 9 taking power cables and telephone lines with it. all lanes of the highway were shut down for about six hours, power was knocked out almost 1000 customers >> it was like, what is going on? we were not expecting that >> on the north side of the day people are finally feeling productive >> we're waiting for a break in the range >> so she could finally bring home her brand new refrigerator >> we could not put it on the trailer until the rain stopped so it has been sitting here for two weeks.

this is a good thing >> the boy scouts do not need a refrigerator, they are ready to rough it. >> anyway i'm almost sorry it is not raining but we might get some rain after all. >> in the east, north, and south bay. >> it was raining in santa cruz today but that did not stop crews from shore and off the boardwalk. days of rain cut through the sandy banks that normally buy for the boardwalk from the san lorenzo river. the flooding took out one staircase earlier this week and damaged some pipes but so far, no further damage. will we continue to dry out or will we get more rain? >> when i was here three weeks ago we were despairing of the fact that it is so dry and now we are beginning to complain. at least we get a chance to dry

>> more fresh snow fell in parts of the sierra today on top of the 3 ft. or more that fell yesterday and another three-4 ft. from earlier in the week. the accumulation was not as much, just a few inches. a man and woman accused of carjacking and robbery are in jail tonight, and they're also the subjects of several and hours long standoff with police. officers say a 39 year-old stole and escalade from the gas station and the next day swat teams called out to a home where he and his friend were thought to be. this afternoon they say they spotted premiere's driving a stolen s-u-v. during a short chase he hit two cars. officers arrested him and his girlfriend. the american soldier accused of killing 16 civilians in afghanistan is back in the u.s.

awaiting formal charges. many people in afghanistan are angry that he was taken out of the country were the crimes are committed. >> crowds marched through the streets demanding the u.s. soldier accused of killing women and children stand trial in afghanistan. the u.s. perpetrator must be put on trial according to our laws, this man says. the staff sergeant is being held at fort leavenworth in kansas. the 30 year-old will undergo a physical and psychological exam. military officials say he left his base last sunday and killed 16 civilians, nine of them children. a defense department official says he was drinking before the attack. neighbors in his home town are shocked >> a good guy, fun to be with. >> the military moved his family to a nearby base where he was stationed.

the family has put their house up for sale. a neighbor says he used to watch your kids >> i am completely blown away and i can't believe he would of done that. i'm waiting for something to come out that there is more involved >> court documents show that he was arrested 10 years ago for assaulting a girlfriend and had to attending your management class is. he enlisted in the military after the 911 attacks. he was deployed to iraq three times. he was suffered from a head injury army recruiter when he learned he was being sent to afghanistan. >> one of the largest communities of afghan at immigrants and americans is in the east bay and today many of them turned out at a rally to express their outrage at the massacre. >> afghan americans meeting here

>> a retired u.s. auto worker and former nazi prison guard convicted for his part in the deaths of thousands of jews during world war two has died. he was convicted last year by a german court at a death camp in poland. he died of natural causes. he was extradited from his home in ohio in 2009 to stand trial. he was sentenced to five years in prison but was freed because of his age. he claimed he was innocent, he was 91 years old. a series of suicide car bombings killed dozens of people in the syrian capital. to attack struck heavily
