the >> the most tragic and deadly accident in the 100 year history of this san fransisco yacht club. tonight a major decision by the coast guard about four people still missing. killer tornadoes across the midwest, why residents of one town hit the hardest had no warning. >> it used to be right of passage for just about every teenager, getting their driver's license. but not anymore. why more and more young people are choosing not to drive? good evening. they could be lost in the ocean forever. tonight a vigil for the sailors still missing one day after a deadly yacht race accident. it ran aground on the island's 25 mi. from the golden gate bridge. tonight we have more information about the sailors and the search. >> the coast guard spent most of the day covering some 5000 square miles of open ocean with

three cutters and a helicopter searching for the missing sailors but at sunset tonight they suspended the search and offered condolences to the families. friends and fellow sailors console one another at the san fransisco yacht club in belvidere following an evening vigil for one known dead in four missing sailors. early saturday morning that yacht left the club to take part in a selling tradition dating back more than 100 years. the annual race from san francisco bay up and around the fairmount islands. it was near those islands that the seven men one-woman crew hit the ground. >> this will hit the vessel. and it's what for people off board. and the rest of the crew turned the vessel around to rescue those four people and they were hit by another wave which knocked them into the rocks. >> a coast guard helicopter responding to the mayday hovered over the island as a first and a rescue swimmer to the island and

take two of three survivors to safety. the body of a fourth person was identified as a 46 year-old from bill their. >> one of the best sailors, he has been selling his entire life, he is amazingly experience. and more importantly he was one of the kindest most gentle people you'll ever meet. >> the sailors remain missing. the rescued >> air station san fransisco was out there until 2:00 a.m. searching, the coast guard cutter which is an 87 ft. patrol boat was out there a little after midnight before the swells got too big for them to continue. >> pit bulls of the sailors are weighing heavily on sailors around the country. >> it is hard to imagine what

the end result may be. we're just playing it minute by minute and not given up hope until we have to. >> >> there was a tremendous effort made by the coast guard but the sad news is that they have suspended the search and there are no plans to resume. >> thank you. police are announcing a toddler found at the scene of an apparent murder-suicide is the daughter of the two people involved. witnesses reported a shooting yesterday morning in the parking lot of a shopping center on east capitol expressway. officers found the body of a man and woman. the child was in a car nearby and is now with child protective services. it appears the worst of the storm is over but for thousands, the cleanup is just starting. this weekend at least five states were hit by more than 100 tornadoes. manuel gallegus is in oklahoma, in one of the hardest-hit towns. >> the tornadoes came out of the sky so fast that storm chasers could barely keep track. at one point, to touch the

ground at the same time. there are reports of a least 120 tornadoes from texas through while. one of them hit woodward oklahoma in the middle of the night killing several people. residents never heard any warning sirens because the system was damaged by the storm. >> that is where my wife works, and as you can see there is not much left. >> he has lived here his entire life and has seen plenty of tournedos. >> you never seen them like this? >> never. >> the tornado cut through this small town destroying homes and businesses. the tornado was so powerful that it picked up his delivery truck and slammed into this building, and it tore apart the entire steel and concrete structure. another strong twister hit a small town in iowa shattering buildings and ripping off the front of his home. >> the house was shaking and i could feel it listing, i thought house would go. >> 250 people live here and almost everyone suffered some

kind of damage. but most of the reported tornadoes hit open spaces, keeping destruction to a minimum. a big relief for the governor of kansas. >> i am amazed by what did not happen. with that size of system. >> given the potential for damage, many consider themselves lucky that it was not worse. >> staff and volunteers are cleaning up at an iowa hospital that was badly damaged by a tornado. the medical center in preston has suffered significant structural damage. patients had to be moved to other treatment centers but doctors say that everyone is ok. speaking for the first time about the secret service scandal, president barack obama said that he would be angry if the allegations are true. the investigation over secret service agents and prostitutes is overshadowing his work in colombia this weekend. >> 11 members of the secret service advance team are on administrative leave and under investigation after some of the

group got into a dispute with a prostitute over money at this hotel last wednesday. five members of the u.s. military working on the president's visit were disciplined in this incident. the secret service team was sent home and replaced before the president's arrival friday. members of congress are threatening to investigate. this congressman on face the nation. >> the question is, is a whole organization in need of some soul-searching in changes, before the president, vice president, or members of the cabinet are in danger. >> the secret service insists that the president and his party were never in danger. this is a former director of the secret service that says the decision to remove the agents quickly was the right one. >> they recognize that they cannot have on the ground, in the process of protecting the president of the united states, and be distracted. >> he admits the indiscretions

with the organizations in an uncomfortable position. >> gay pride themself on not making the front page of the newspaper, not being the lead story on the nightly news. that is not what they are about. they are behind the scenes and will remain behind the scenes and an incident like this is very disturbing and very embarrassing for them. >> the secret service says the investigation is a top priority and could include polygraph test. the president expects the investigation to be thorough and rigorous. and if the allegations are true, he will be angry. >> it is almost 10:00 a.m. in afghanistan, they're waking up to a second day of explosions and heavy gunfire. one day after coordinated attacks in three different cities. tonight the taleban claims responsibility. this could be just the beginning of the violence. >> the coordinated attacks

as an offshoot of the taleban headquartered in pakistan. >> one has to be concerned about seven simultaneous attacks countrywide. it does show a certain resilience by the adversary but in the end there may be more casualties from the insurgents and there are on the side of innocent civilians or government troops. >> in a written statement the international forces commander said that he was enormously proud of the afghan response, they were on the scene immediately, will lead and well coordinated. the shooting continued until well after dark, a taleban spokesperson said the attacks had been planned for months but promised there were more to come. >> a solemn memorial exactly 100 years after the sinking of the titanic. reeves were thrown overboard from two ships to honor the more than 1500 people that died in the disaster in 1912.

emancipation day. a holiday gives taxpayers until tuesday to file. one day after best buy announced which stores they're shutting down, the closure in california includes two in the bay area. in pittsburgh and east palo alto. here is what lured customers that to the door is today. >> i have no is purchased from here. >> he is one of the money that came to best buy in east palo alto hoping to gain from the retailer's loss, with markdowns sales around 20%. >> i'm just trying to find any good sales on games or movies or electronics. >> i saved almost $400. >> the consumer electronics giant posted a $1.7 billion quarterly loss and decided to close 50 stores nationwide. but the reason is customers are turning to online retailers for electronics.

>> they can buy it so much cheaper, it was kind of expected that it would close at any time. >> the employees were informed yesterday and then closed the store for the day reopening today with fresh mark downs. consumers found out through direct emails and the news. >> we have every gadget you can imagine but there is always more gadgets. >> this is a loss for the city of east palo alto and their tax base. city leaders are confident another retailer will want to move into the space right off of highway 101 in a shopping center near ikea, an economic engine for the city. >> it is very important to maintain local jobs, any business that we attract will be able to hire some of the people locally. >> best buy is trying to find workers jobs at other locations. >> it is a good opportunity for them to find something better to do. but it is also sad because no one works for fun. >> the store closed permanently

on may 12th. >> young people are less likely to drive these days. transportation researchers say that a percentage of people in their teens and 20s and 30s with drivers' licenses dropped dramatically over the past three decades. why? researchers say the tough economy and the cost of buying and maintaining a car played a role. another possible factor is social media. researchers say that social networking may reduce the need for face-to-face contact. facebook is ready to pump millions of dollars into its new home. the social network company has about 2000 employees at the menlo park campus but it wants to triple that number in the coming years. the city currently allows 3600 in the space and under a new agreement if facebook is allowed to expand, it will pay the city up to $1 million per year for at least the next 10 years. a popular route was brought back for a san fransisco street even today.

hundreds came out to explore the closed off roadster golden gate park and along the great highway near the ocean. dozens of live performances lined the route, some even tried to take part in a world record for the longest chain of roller skaters. meteorologist joining us now, it was a spectacular weekend, let's see if things continue for the rest of the week. >> it may continue, we see a very benign weather pattern for the west coast, the severe weather last week that left all the rain across the area is moving through the middle section of the country producing severe weather as it tracks across the midwest, tornado spawned yesterday and today along the leading edge of the frontal boundary. from houston up to chicago and into minneapolis. again, a very strong weather maker with lots of thunderstorm activity spawned in its weight. mostly clear in the bay tonight. we look for warm conditions to continue into tomorrow as we see some patchy low clouds and fog

developing throughout the area. as we continue dry and mild through the week with temperatures today peeking out in the upper 60s and low seventies around the french locations. cop 70 livermore 71. warmer tomorrow. just a few degrees, nothing dramatic as we continued to see the storm track go by to the north, clipping the oregon border. high-pressure prevails for us so we will hang onto low clouds and warm temperatures here into the beginning of the week. then we will see some mergers tomorrow into the middle and low seventies for the warmer locations. it's like cool down expected mid-week before we are warming up again towards the end of the week, and for tonight we will look for mid to upper '40's across most locations with daytime highs tomorrow slightly warmer than today as mentioned. mid to low seventies.

clearing out by the end of the week as temperatures bought back into the upper seventies, possibly to the low '80s for some of the warmer locations. as this continues, we will carry a warm and dry pattern into early next week before we see things cool down again across the region with a slight chance of showers showing up. maybe late sunday into monday due to the fact that it should not be anything too impressive, just a glancing blow and cooler temperatures will likely result with very little, if any rain expected. >> next week it looks wonderful. >> '80s for the first time. >> thankyou. heads up for drivers that use bold drive. caltrans will shut down one northbound lane starting tomorrow from 8:00 p.m. until noon during the workweek and from 9:00 p.m. until noon on weekends. that will allow crews to remove sections of a sidewalk and bridge. the lane closure goes until next
