this is kpix5 news on kbcw. bigger than katrina, a super typhoon is slamming the central philippines. the damage and where the storm is headed next. >> tonight, we are getting a first look at what google's secret project will be like once it's finished. >> and see how a teenager is keeping the bay area skies safe for when you fly. good evening, i'm elizabeth cook. >> rain and lots of it is. this is what it looked like right now. the largest storm ever recorded on earth slams the nation. more on typhoon. paul. >> this was a category 5 hurricane with sustain winds of the center of this earlier today, 195 miles per hour. making it as strong as an ef4 tornado. imagine a tornado stretching from san francisco all the way to lake tahoe. that's what moved through the

philippines. stronger winds than hurricane katrina and hurricane andrew. gusts of 220 miles per hour. as i mentioned, winds were as strong as an ef4 tornado moving through the philippines. here's a look at what went down. >> it cut communications, blocked roads and sent debris flying throughout the central philippines. sustained winds of 147 miles an hour with gusts to 170 miles an hour when it made land fall in a rural area of the country. it hit 405 miles southeast of manilla and catastrophic damage and casualties. weather officials lost contact with people and the equipment used to measure the wind. more than 125,000 people have been evacuated from towns and villages in the typhoon's path. visibility so poor, only silhouettes can be seen through the thick curtain of water. the storm will maintain super

typhoon strength despite weakening slightly as it passes over land. >> a couple things to talk about if you are wondering what is difference between a typhoon and hurricane. this is a major hurricane, if it was hitting the u.s. the storm is edging its way into the south china sea. could make land fall there as a category 3 storm. one thing to note, the answer is yes, often, the rain fall from these remnant typhoons will work all the way around the pacific ocean and actually be some of the rain fall we get here on the west coast. if it's raining in a couple weeks, it may be from this storm. i'll have our local forecast in a few minutes. local communities are already bracing for the worst. reps with the community center in san francisco are telling us tonight they tend to take a proactive stance when it comes to providing resources for those in need. >> every year, basically, you know, the file philippines is hit. we are trying to send money back and relief efforts all the

time. >> some of these include medical supplies, clothing, and food. but they say the biggest push is for monetary donations. >> google secret barge isn't so secret anymore. and tonight, for the first time, we are getting a look at what the finished product will look like. and kristen shows us there's a lot more in store. kristen. >> yeah, that mysterious google barge just beyond those lights is a little less of a mystery tonight. just take a look inside. public records from the port of san francisco show these artistic rendering of the barge and describe it as an unprecedented artistic structure that will drive visitation to the waterfront. the floating 50-foot tall made of recycled shipping containers will sport a dozen decorative sails designed to look like fish fins. there will be cat walks and a deck will offer unique views of the san francisco skyline. so why a water born vessel?

7,000 deaths every year. according to the fda, americans use 80% less transfats today than they did a decade ago. a special award ceremony tonight honoring two people who took care of more than a dozen elderly people abandoned in a senior home. 911 honored miguel alvarez. alvarez were the janitor and cook at the valley springs manner. after the staff abandoned the facility, they became the caretakers of 19 elderly bedridden and mentally ill patients. alvarez spent several days feeding, medicating, and giving emergency treatment until help arrived. >> heart wouldn't let us leave nobody behind like that. conscious or couldn't do it. we couldn't find ourselves doing that. >> you know, you cannot describe what they are going through. so, for me, to abandon him, i could not do that.
