this is kpix5 news on kbcw. bigger than katrina, a super typhoon is slamming the central philippines. the damage and where the storm is headed next. >> tonight, we are getting a first look at what google's secret project will be like once it's finished. >> and see how a teenager is keeping the bay area skies safe for when you fly. good evening, i'm elizabeth cook. >> rain and lots of it is. this is what it looked like right now. the largest storm ever recorded on earth slams the nation. more on typhoon. paul. >> this was a category 5 hurricane with sustain winds of the center of this earlier today, 195 miles per hour. making it as strong as an ef4 tornado. imagine a tornado stretching from san francisco all the way to lake tahoe. that's what moved through the

philippines. stronger winds than hurricane katrina and hurricane andrew. gusts of 220 miles per hour. as i mentioned, winds were as strong as an ef4 tornado moving through the philippines. here's a look at what went down. >> it cut communications, blocked roads and sent debris flying throughout the central philippines. sustained winds of 147 miles an hour with gusts to 170 miles an hour when it made land fall in a rural area of the country. it hit 405 miles southeast of manilla and catastrophic damage and casualties. weather officials lost contact with people and the equipment used to measure the wind. more than 125,000 people have been evacuated from towns and villages in the typhoon's path. visibility so poor, only silhouettes can be seen through the thick curtain of water. the storm will maintain super

typhoon strength despite weakening slightly as it passes over land. >> a couple things to talk about if you are wondering what is difference between a typhoon and hurricane. this is a major hurricane, if it was hitting the u.s. the storm is edging its way into the south china sea. could make land fall there as a category 3 storm. one thing to note, the answer is yes, often, the rain fall from these remnant typhoons will work all the way around the pacific ocean and actually be some of the rain fall we get here on the west coast. if it's raining in a couple weeks, it may be from this storm. i'll have our local forecast in a few minutes. local communities are already bracing for the worst. reps with the community center in san francisco are telling us tonight they tend to take a proactive stance when it comes to providing resources for those in need. >> every year, basically, you know, the file philippines is hit. we are trying to send money back and relief efforts all the

time. >> some of these include medical supplies, clothing, and food. but they say the biggest push is for monetary donations. >> google secret barge isn't so secret anymore. and tonight, for the first time, we are getting a look at what the finished product will look like. and kristen shows us there's a lot more in store. kristen. >> yeah, that mysterious google barge just beyond those lights is a little less of a mystery tonight. just take a look inside. public records from the port of san francisco show these artistic rendering of the barge and describe it as an unprecedented artistic structure that will drive visitation to the waterfront. the floating 50-foot tall made of recycled shipping containers will sport a dozen decorative sails designed to look like fish fins. there will be cat walks and a deck will offer unique views of the san francisco skyline. so why a water born vessel?

its makers say its position will allow it to move around and dock at a number of different locations. by and large, llc, which submitted the documents, believe the floating studio will be more than an exhibit. it inspires conversation, community, and aha moments. and the lease on this project is about one year now to november 2014. it will be moved and docked at different places by the month. reporting live from treasure island, kristen ayers, kpix5. >> accused of lighting a man on fire on a bus monday. richard thomas is being tried as an adult. oakland police say thomas told investigator tores he lit 18- year-old, sasha on fire because he was wearing a skirt. they say thomas also stated he was home phobic. richard's family said he plans to send a letter of apology to sasha. >> it's not okay to set

someone on fire. period. while human beings, nobody should have to suffer that kind of trauma. >> sasha is hospitalized with burns to his legs. richard thomas did not enter a plea. he's due in court next week. put the phone down. san francisco wants murks wants muni riders to follow those rules. andrea. >> reporter: as part of a two pronged approach. one is a million dollar federal grant put more costs on muni buses and trains. the other part is simply, put away your digital boyfriends. the real tech bubble, not the economic one, but that connected at the fingertip relationship between you and your phone, san francisco mayor, ed lee, wants to call the concept eyes up, phone down, in response to rising smart phone thefts and the murder of sf state student,

a novel concept. think of it as a real life status update. >> talking to people sit right next to you. >> and it's not just on muni buses and trains. my photographer is not immuned to texting when he should be looking around at his surroundings. live in san francisco, andrea, kpix5. >> bart unions and management squared off against workplace safety, a hearing in san francisco looked into what happened last month. when a bart train hit and killed two workers on the tracks at the center of the debate was culture. workers gave examples of what they called dangerous conditions. bart says safety has always been a priority and it has worked with osha over the years to remedy problems. >> a mother reunited with her two-week old baby after the father took the infant to mexico. santa clara county authorities said patricia flew to arizona to be with her child. police issued an amber alert late tuesday. authorities in mexico found the

father and baby yesterday and turned them over to u.s. border patrol agents in arizona. >> 22-year-old, guler appeared in an arizona courtroom earlier today and is waiting extradition back to the bay area. officers say he threatened to harm himself and the baby after an argument with the mother. >> twitter soar today on the first day of trading, it was the most hotly anticipated apo since facebook. compares the stock market debuts of the social media giants. >> yes, the investing world is all a twitter about twitter, but should you be? >> i think you should look at this kind of investing as investor tanment. >> whether it's twitter, gold bars, or comic books, they are all interesting to watch, but don't sink a significant portion of your assets in it.

>> any new tech company is a double risk. >> many are calling it the antifacebook ipo. twitter was up 73% to close just below 45. facebook hit the market last year at $38 a share and even chewly dropped to 17. >> kcbs radio says there were a number of reasons for facebook's free fall. >> it was a disaster. started at $38 and fell well short of that. it was upset by a number of problems. nasdaq had technical glitches. the stock getting out there. >> he says there seems to be more investor uncertainty. >> the high volume that wasn't making much money. it had a lot to prove. those two factors really dodged facebook. >> so, while twitter did a lot of things better than facebook, twitter attraction and why people want to be a part of it.

something like this. this is very unique that no one has ever done. >> raptors love sjc. all that asphalt creates thermals. the grassy areas are home to dinner, squirrels, and gophers. the skies, well, it's getting crowded up there. last month, the boeing 737 taking off sucked up what was likely a red tailed hawk. the engine was damaged and they made an emergency landing in oakland. in the last decade, bird strikes in san jose went up 50%. so, over the past eight months, caleb tweaked this popular design. when a hawk takes the bait and trips the beam, score one for aviation safety. caleb spent more than 130 hours on it. >> i would be putting in a lot of overtime to build these traps if i didn't have caleb. >> it does feel better that i'm doing this to help at least one or two hawks that might hit a plane. >> it saves airlines money, saves passengers time, and

7,000 deaths every year. according to the fda, americans use 80% less transfats today than they did a decade ago. a special award ceremony tonight honoring two people who took care of more than a dozen elderly people abandoned in a senior home. 911 honored miguel alvarez. alvarez were the janitor and cook at the valley springs manner. after the staff abandoned the facility, they became the caretakers of 19 elderly bedridden and mentally ill patients. alvarez spent several days feeding, medicating, and giving emergency treatment until help arrived. >> heart wouldn't let us leave nobody behind like that. conscious or couldn't do it. we couldn't find ourselves doing that. >> you know, you cannot describe what they are going through. so, for me, to abandon him, i could not do that.

>> after several phone calls, authorities came and rescued the patients moving them to different homes. the facility is now being investigated for elder abuse. >> well, for one san francisco woman, there's nothing a little beyonce can't cure. joe vasquez shows us moments before a life changing surgery, she cranked the music and threw herself a party in the operating room. >> just before her surgery tuesday morning, debra of san francisco turned the operating room into a club. she got the surgery team to turn on a beyonce song and they all danced. the video now has more than 2 million hits on youtube in less than 48 hours. even beyonce posted the video on her facebook page. days beforehand, debra had posted it online that she would be having the surgery here at ucf at precisely 7:30 and encouraged her friends and her family and the whole world to
