and they present things the way they want to present them. >> collins, expected back in court on january 3. korean-war veteran recently released after being detained in north korea said he was forced into making a taped confession. and today the 85-year-old merrill newman tried to show that he was being coerced by using awkward phrasing and poor english grammar. newman says that the interrogator said if he didn't apologize for the alleged crimes, he would be sentence the to 15 years. here is a lick his detention. saying: "i just didn't understand that, for the noh korean regime, the korean w isn't over and that even innocent remarks about the r can cause big problems if you are a foreigner. with the benefit of hindsight i should have more sensitive to that."

since the president first took office in 2008. former presidents george w. bush, bill clinton, and jimmy carter will also attend the massive memorial. this stadium holds nearly 100,000 people, but many more want to be here. thousands will watch from surrounding streets on big stream. before tuesday's public memorial, family and close friends pay their respects in private. mandela's eldest grandson and leader of the clan joined the crowd outside the family's home. music and flowers filled the streets as south african thought to turn grief into optimism. >> and i just hope that the young people of today, that they will be able to continue to seek liberty. and i hope that they will go forward with peace. >> reporter: it's a message that the young south africans know well. tina krauss, cbs news, johannesburg. >> reporter: 11,000 troops are being mobilized to secure the stadium to help control the crowds.

today senate republican lear "bob huff" proposed legisla ublic transit the last bart strike could be the first one ever. today the leader proposed legislation that would bar them from walking off the job. in a statement he said that shutting down the public transit is neither safe nor fair. that the police officers and the firefighters, they're not allowed to strike because they provide the important public service and public transit that is also crucial. employees who violate the law could potentially be removed or face other disciplinary action. tomorrow federal investigators will interview dozens of experts and witnesses of the asiana plane crash, hoping to get more answers on
