this is kpix5 news on kbcw. >> long awaited answers in the death of a san francisco woman, but the key piece of information the family says is still missing. a woman accused of robbing a bay area bank. why law enforcement believes she could be part of a growing trend. and saying i do in san francisco. the celebrity wedding prep underway tonight and how the couple is letting everyone witness their big day. good evening, i'm elizabeth cook. tonight we finally know how a woman whose body was found in a stairwell at san francisco general died. lynn spalding had been missing from her hospital room for weeks by the time she was found. spalding's friends and family are taking issue with the autopsy results. >> 67 days after lynn spalding was found dead, this is what her family has been waiting

for. her autopsy report. missing, however, is a key piece of information. when she died. >> the cause of death, if she was out on that stairwell for a couple of hours is very clear. it's neglect on the part of san francisco general and the san francisco sheriff's department. >> the 22 page report says spalding died of an electrolyte imbalance. in other words, she died of severe dehydration. >> she died alone and evidently starved to death or from lack of water on that stairwell. >> report continues by trying to link alcoholism to the dehydration that killed her in the stairwell of building 5. a stairwell that locks from the inside. the report was released this afternoon to news media and not to spalding's two children. family spokesperson questions its timing. >> does the medical examiner think because this report is released at 3:00 on a friday during the holiday season, that somehow we're not going to talk about it or be outraged? >> spalding's family wants and

deserves to know more about how their mother checked in with a bladder infection and left in a bag. >> we would invite the medical examiner and dr. heart to give us answers. >> now, at issue, she was in fact not an alcoholic. released a statement today that said new measures have been put in place, including daily stairwell checks and training for new security staff. live in the newsroom, andrea, kpix5. >> police are looking for a bank robber who happens to be a woman. kristen ayers is in fremont with exclusive video of the latest heist by a person resembling a suspect nicknamed the sports cap bandit. kristen. >> yeah, there are some similarities and tonight for the first time, we're getting a look at the surveillance video of that woman walking through these doors and holding up the bank here in fremont. we are also getting a glimpse of a rising trend in female

bank robbers. hair pulled back in a bun, large dart glasses covering her eyes. this is not your average bank robber. >> to have a female suspect is somewhat unusual. >> surveillance video released to kpix5, the woman can be seen walking into a fremont bank and making a b-line for the counter. watch as she pulls out a piece of paper scrawled a note and gives it to the teller ordering her to hand over the cash. after collecting the money, the robber calmly walks out. >> it could be a new trend, maybe a new uptick in a new type of crime. >> a steady uptick in female bank bandits. 5.8% of bank robbers were female in 2008. that number jumped to nearly 9% last year. nationwide, nearly a dozen women topped the fbi's most wanted bank robber's list. right here in the bay area, federal investigators are still trying to find this bank robber, dubbed the sports cap bandit. she is believed to have knocked

over two banks in october and november. fremont police are comparing the images. uncertain of whether there could be a connection. >> the shape of her face, obviously, the large sunglasses. >> i did talk to a profiler tonight to try and find out what might be motivating these bank robberies by women. she said both men and women alike tend to rob out of desperation. reporting live in fremont, kristen ayers kpix5. >> the robbers are described as asian. women 5'8" and anywhere from 130 to 170-pounds. if you recognize them, police would like to hear from you. the hunt for one of the fbi's most wanted terrorists had agents going door to door today in the north bay. they are looking for daniel andrea san diego. he is suspected of bombing. today, they were asking people

in san rafael if they had seen him. san diego has family there and pass tips placed him in the bay area. the fbi was closing in on him shortly after the bombings. >> evidently, our surveillance was compromised and if i'm not mistaken, he parked his car, got out of his vehicle, and started walking down the street and went into a bar station and that was the last time we seen him. >> there was a $250,000 reward for information leading to san diego's arrest. a surprise for oakland police after the car they chased ended up in a crash. the driver was just 13 years old. police say the boy carjacked an elderly man downtown and sped through west oakland. the chase ended at adaline and 29th streets. this is cell phone video of the aftermath. they hit the back of the stolen honda on purpose to get the spin out of control and end the chase. the honda snapped a tree, hit two other cars, and ended up on

its side against the front of the house. >> as soon as the car flipped, there was at least ten police cars here and they were all out and had their guns drawn immediately. >> moments later, the 13-year- old was taken away in handcuffs. the boy may be connected to recent holdups in oakland. they tell us he has been arrested a number of times. no one was hurt, including the 78-year-old man who was carjacked. traffic is back to normal tonight on the san mateo bridge after a couple's domestic dispute kept drivers waiting. a little after 2:00 p.m., the chp said the couple's car crashed locking one lane in the heyward direction. at this point, they were already arguing. after the accident, they both got out of the car and the disagreement kept on going. now at some point, the man who was driving ended up in the water. he was rescued and is okay. we now know the name of the student who opened fire at a colorado high school today. he is 18-year-old, carl

halverson. it happened within 17 miles of last summer's aurora theater shooting. the gunman today took his own life. >> police say at 12:33, a student entered arapahoe high school carrying a shotgun. >> the gunman came into the school and immediately asked for the location of a very specific teacher and he named that teacher by name. when the teacher heard that this individual was asking for him, the teacher exited the school immediately. >> that, say police, may have confused the gunman and bought time for law enforcement. but shots were fired. a student, identified as a 15- year-old girl, was critically wounded. >> at first, we were all like, what was that? every student was really confused and then like we heard two more shots. >> a second student received minor injuries, then with police on the way, the gunman

turned his weapon on himself. >> our initial investigation is causing us to believe that this shooting was the result of revenge on the part of the shooter because of a confrontation or a disagreement between the shooter and the teachesser. >> the shooting happened just 8 miles away from columbine high school. the 1999 attack there forced changes in the way police respond to active shooter situations. now, they move in more quickly. also close by, the aurora movie theater where 12 people were gunned down last year. police say two devices described as mollitof cocktails were found in the school. one was rendered harmless by police. barry peterson, centennial, colorado. >> the female student who was shot remains in critical condition tonight. >> three bay area cities are

holding gun buy back events tomorrow to mark the anniversary in newtown, connecticut. oakland's buy back goes from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the youth uprising building. san francisco's gun buyback program goes from 9:00 to 2:00 on tennessee street. and in san jose, guns will be accepted from 9:00 to 1:00 at our lady of guadalupe church. organizers in each city are offering incentives like cash or gift cards to try to get more guns off the streets. >> we're learning the fake interpreter at nelson mandela's memorial has a violent past. the government revealed he was accused of murder ten years ago. his rap sheet includes charges of rape and kidnapping. many of the charges were later dropped because he is deemed mentally unfit to stand trial. officials still aren't able to explain how the interpreter was allowed to be so close to president obama and other world

francisco. 46 degrees for your low tonight. we're talking about a drought. we've been in a severe drought. the extreme drought, which was well to our south is creeping toward the bay area. we have been that dry and will stay very dry for a while. this forecast is not showing a drop of rain for the next search days. heading toward the mountains, mainly sunny skies. that's near a record high. 51 degrees coming up on sunday. mid december in the sierra, 51 for a high. all because of this big ridge of high pressure taking the storm trek to our north. no chance of any rain fall. and high pressure areas typically begin to warm the atmosphere if they stay over one spot and this one will. all the activity is on the east coast, big snowstorm for new york city and philadelphia tomorrow for us. the ridge doesn't move much. our weather doesn't change much, if anything, we'll get milder. so, what to expect. the air quality will continue because that ridge is sitting over top of us. the dry weather, the sunny weather will continue with the warmest days being monday and tuesday of next week.
