shelter for homeless use is in final days. as linda tells us, the closure is a sign of the changing landscape of san francisco. >> reporter: they are homeless, young. some escaping home life . this drop in center known as the homeless youth alliance. preparing the last free meal on this christmas day. >> i don't know what we're going to do to stay clean or get by on food. it's a blow. >> for 12 years, it's been a safe place. they've lost their lease . they've tried everything to stay. >> we offered to pay a much higher price. offered to pay market rate. >> and they were fine. >> the property owners include a founder of the medical clinic. he supports the center.

but the city has ordered them to make seismic upgrades, fix code violations and return the building to residential use. staff counselor remembers when she ran away from home at 14. this center helped her. >> one place where i felt safe and not judged. it was okay to be there. family is where you can find it and make it. >> they lost their building but not abandoned the homeless kids who need them. >> we'll still be working with them. everyone's committed to working on a street level. >> tim says the center has been his lifeline. >> sad. it's a good place. hate to see it close. >> despite reality, staff still cling to some hope. >> we want the christmas miracle. still, it could happen

. >> the parting gift sleeping bags. since they will no longer have a warm place to drop into. linda yee, kpix 5. >> the center serves about 5,000 homeless kids a year. >> tough time to have hard times but san francisco firefighters refuse again this year to let children go wanting. they drove through under served neighborhoods today handing out hundreds of toys. the gift giving was unannounced. the firefighters say they will spend entire 24 hour christmas shift handing out gifts. many came from a well-known toy drive in the bay area. >> the lefty toy drive collected 11,000 new and unwrapped toys. >> and police and firefighters dropped off gifts to kids otherwise have gone without. >> a hot meal and warm clothes also being delivered this christmas. thousands showed up at the christmas meal.

grateful to his husky who probably saved his life. he was on a ski run when he took a horrible fall. he was stock in a ravine and couldn't move. his dog juno wouldn't leave his side until they heard people nearby. >> i looked at her and go go get him. she actually ran off and there was -- they had a dog with them. and she somehow or another brought the dog back to me. >> incredible dog. incredibly, one of those nearby skiers was a trauma surgeon. took five hours to get somers off the mountain. she stayed with her master and kept him warm. >> two of the toughest predators on earth. how is it they are so cute and cuddly? this trio of cubs born at an oklahoma zoo are the second of their kind in the world. result of generations of cross breeding. dad is a
