this is kpix5 news on kbcw. >> this is not a good sign. a sudden spike in flu cases has one bay area hospital bracing for the worst. good evening, i'm ken bastida. >> betty shows us regional medical center has set up a triage tent to deal with the flu spread. >> it's a sign of just how fast the flu may be spreading in the bay area. today, regional medical center of san jose set up four hospital beds inside this tent next to the er to absorb the overflow of patients. >> because she felt the emergency department had the potential to become somewhat overwelmed. we wanted to be able to treat these patients quickly and safely. >> the hospital has seen up to 70 more patients a day come in with flu-like symptoms. most tested positive for h1n1 which caused the worldwide pandemic in 2009. across town, valley medical

center says it seen a dramatic similar spike in flu cases in the last 48 hours. >> fever, chills, body aches, coughs, runny nose, symptoms typical of the flu. >> to date, there have been five flu related deaths. neither person had received the flu vaccine. it's not too late to get your shot. peek flu season in california is january through march. and regional medical center say the plans to set up an even larger tent in its parking lot tomorrow to accommodate the high volume of flu patients it expects this season. in san jose, kpix5. >> the cbc says h1n1 affects young and middle-aged adults. this current vaccine does protect against the strain. a cockroach problem.

the processing facility is the same one implicated in that nationwide salmonella outbreak last year. today the usda suspended all operations there until foster farms comes up with a plan to eliminate the cockroaches. the company issued this statement. saying it temporarily stopped operations to allow for enhanced sanitizing to take place. the plan is now waiting on an inspection in order to resume operations. >> an explosion left two workers hurt. we're told an employee of the biotech firm was working with solvents when something went wrong. >> small explosion had ensued. knocked over another flammable liquids cabinet, which started a fire. also blew out some of the windows. >> sprinklers knocked down the fire, but two employees were burned. one was critically hurt. but in this statement, denies

that, saying both workers injures were minor. a yahoo! employee from oakland has been missing since new year's day. now a private investigator is involved in the case. sharon chin reports, friends say he was a brilliant employee. sharon. >> yeah, friends say they last saw him here in san francisco ringing in the new year with fireworks along the waterfront. then he just seemed to vanish. at his new year's eve party in san francisco, dustin diaz took these photos of his friend. they walked to watch the midnight fireworks. he snapped a photo and posted it before leaving in a car. diaz said he was happy. there was no hint of the emotional issues the private investigator says he had. >> we were having an awesome time. we were laughing. a lot of the photos are of him laughing. >> he had a past history of

unstableness and it had to deal with emotional, you know, outburst. never physically harmed anyone, but he talked about, you know, issues where he would be better off not being around. >> a programmer at yahoo! is so valuable, the company hired the private investigator to find him. the investigator would not confirm this. he made it home, but left his diabetes kit, medication, and kitten behind. on new year's day, he tweeted a friend, thanks for being a great friend. apparently, he has taken off to thailand before without telling anyone. it's a mystery this time. he has tattoos and a sacred heart with cross bones on his chest. kpix5. >> a woman is in the san francisco hospital after a tow truck accidentally hit her while she was riding her bike. it happened at 5:00 in the south market area.

the bicycle was left mangled in the street as police police investigated the accident. her condition has not yet been released. police blocked off the area to traffic for over an hour. the parents at sherman elementary school in san francisco launched a fund raising drive to the family of a little girl hit and killed on new year's eve. six-year-old, sophia, was a first grader at sherman. she was in a crosswalk at polk and ellis when a driver rounded the corner and hit them. the online fundraiser has already raised more than $25,000 for funeral, burial, and medical expenses. >> we know they have mounting medical costs and personal costs because both parents are unemployed. we are trying to help them with their immediate needs. >> the driver has been charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for failing to yield to the family. he did not have a passenger at

the time. a bay area teen had to defend herself while being bullied by a group of classmates. now, she is defending herself again. this time in a courtroom. as andrea reports, she is facing battery charges. andrea. >> well, the west costa say it appears criminal charges are coming into play. >> does this fight look like battery to you? the district attorney's office thinks it does and charged the transgender teen at the center of it with misdemeanor battery. >> it sucks. >> the fight happened on november 14 at hercules middle high school. her classmates were taunting and bullying her and that's what sparked the fight. >> i really like, want my -- want the charges against me to be dropped. >> jewels and the other teen seen in this video were

suspended and they were called into question and examined. school board president, charles ramsey, doesn't know why the d.a. got involved. >> if a crime happens, a crime happens. i would like to have a better understanding behind it and learn more about why this is not a punishment enough, especially when the child has expressed a position that they had been bullied. >> there was a police report taken after the fight. jewels public director is equally confused by the charges. >> i don't understand quite why the district attorney's office would prosecute someone who has already been a victim of bully bullying. >> from the classroom to the camera and now to the courtroom, jewels is ready for this ordeal to be over with. >> you think you should have been charged with battery? >> no. >> jewels is due in court to face the charges on february 5

for a pretrial conference. her public defender hopes the charges will be dropped. live in hercules, kpix5. we're getting a look at the man suspected of trying to torch the chinese consulate in san francisco. chinese world journal says this is fang. fang said he was hearing chinese voices. that's why he went after the consulate. the attack caught on surveillance video. nobody was hurt in that incident. fang faces multiple charges. at this point, investigators do not thith was a political incident. a man acould you accused of kidnapping a seven-year-old girl. 43-year-old david douglas is facing several felony charges, including kidnapping with sexual intent. douglas allegedly kidnapped natalie outside her home on friday. police found douglas with the girl in his car.

she was safe. douglas is being held now on a $7 million bail bond. the bay area teen who was declared brain dead after surgery complications in oakland received feeding and breathing tubes today after a public legal fight between jahi mcmath's family and children's hospital oakland, the 13-year- old was moved earlier this week. doctors inserted feeding and breathing tubes today. her body has been kept on a ventilator since mid december. state budget looking much rosier than in the past. in his new budget, governor brown is set to propose paying down the state's debt. he plans to reduce it by more than $11 billion. budget also calls for increasing some spending on schools to more than $45 billion. and it sets aside $850 million to spend on critical maintenance to parks, schools,

w a bay area startup i you never really know what to expect after meeting up with strangers. now a bay area startup is offering a body guard for hire to come along during those meetings. the company rents out body guards to craigslist users for $15 to oversee the transactions. it will cost you $25 if you want the guard to test out the product. the company owner says he has been robbed before during craigslist transactions. >> we want them to dispel any kind of conflict, make sure nothing goes wrong. >> the service is for small transactions like smart phones. it will be available in san francisco and various parts of the east bay starting february 15. the cars of the future may be able to communicate with each other, drive themselves, and be powered by the sun. sumi on the concepts that automakers are showing off at
