street. the victims barely got away. >> reporter: the victim came very close to having himself and his niece and his sister shot at last night by the suspects. they are happy they made it out of there alive. >> when he shot at me, like, on my face, i thought, i'm gone. >> reporter: it was around 8:15 last night when this union city man who didn't want to be identified pulled in to his driveway on santa suzanna way with his sister and 2-year-old niece. instantly there was trouble. >> and i see there was guy running and he point a gun at me and he said give me all your money. whatever you got, just give me. i said, okay, be cool, don't shoot anyone. >> reporter: the victim cooperated and then gravity intervened upsetting the suspect. >> i got the money, i put it right here. and the money fell down and he shoot at me. >> reporter: the suspect then chased the victim's sister and niece through the gates. >> i door was locked and she was

right here and her baby was standing next to her. >> reporter: the suspect fired again leaving this divet in the concrete and then he took out. as soon as it began it was over. armed robbery has dropped in the city and this one is particularly troubling. >> there's nothing we've been able to establish as far as a motive that would have made them a target over anybody else that had been out. >> reporter: union city police have spent the day in the neighborhood looking at neighbors' surveillance video. tomorrow they will meet with the victims again and put together a composite sketch of the suspect. . oakland police are searching for a kidnapper and offering a clue tonight to help find him. investigators released this sketch. they say this guy jumped out

between two parked cars on 17th street and dragged a 19-year-old woman down the street on new year's day. she was able to escape finally but there is a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. it was a crime that got a lot of attention in 2012. a san fransisco couple accused of killing a man they believed was their daughter's pimp. today a federal grand jury indicted barry guilton and loupe mercado on various charges relating to calvin snead's murder. there were 10 defendants in custody. nearly a thousand pages of government documents will be released in the morning all related to the scandal surrounding new jersey governor christie. he fired a staffer today and apologized for political tactics in his office that created passive traffic mess last year. -- massive traffic mess last year. >> i come out here today to apologize to the people of new

jersey. >> reporter: for nearly two hours governor chris christie apologized announcing he'd fired his deputy chief of staff for lying about her role in lane closures that crippled traffic in fort lee, new jersey, last fall. three access lanes leading to the gorge washington bridge were reduced to one. that cautioned hours long traffic jams and delayed school buses and emergency vehicles responding to 911 calls. e-mails and text messages suggest it was political revenge against fort lee's mayor for not endorsing governor christie's reelection bid. kelly wrote an e-mail saying time for traffic problems in fort lee. got it, replied david wildstine. >> i was blindsided yesterday morning. >> reporter: he repeatedly denied playing any part in the

high school. jewlyes gutierrez admits she slapped a girl who threw gum at her. she identifies herself as transgender. new billboards going up in oakland exposing the problem of human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children. the campaign includes message urging people not to ignore the crime. and the parents of one of the victims in the assiana plane crash is filing that claim against the city of san fransisco. ye meng yuan died when she was struck by two san fransisco trucks while on the tarmac at sfo. the city has 45 days to respond. if it rejects the claim, the family can then file a lawsuit. after a slow start flu season has arrived in the bay area and it has turned deadly quickly. this map shows all the deaths it's blamed for in our region.

four counties reported tedly cases of the virus -- deadly cases of the virus today. and there's one particular strain that is cause for concern. >> reporter: this year's vaccines did not include an avian strain that killed a canadian. the alberta resident started feeling symptoms on his plane ride back from beijing and stressed it was an individual case. >> the individual was hospitalized and passed away on january 3rd. >> reporter: they believe avian flu risk to americans is low. that virus is found in poultry in parts of asia and africa. community health officers here say they are more concerned about the h1n1 swine flu virus now sweeping through the bay area, and the most at risk are those that have not had their flu shots. >> we're talking about the healthy 20, 30-year-olds who

feel they're invincible who don't think they need the flu shot and they say they got it once and it made me immune or i got sick from the nu shot so they don't take it again. >> are they at risk. >> they have a lot of interactions with other people, don't practice good hand hygiene so they're spreading the virus. >> reporter: this is the same strain of 2009. it hit china so hard the government screened people coming into the country and quarantined people with temperatures. a woman in her 40s has already died here from h1n1. >> we've had six flu related cases that are hospitalized in the intensive care unit. >> target has dropped the price

free speech if the person knowingly made false statements. major food companies said they would cut calories in their products and now a check on the process by general mills, pepsi, and kraft shows they really did. researchers at the university of north carolina found the companies sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories in 2012 than back in 2007. that's four times the amount they pledged. the drop translates to an average of 78 fewer calories for each american each day. that's roughly a cookie a day or 8 pounds lost per year. we know we can't always believe what we read especially when it comes to food labels. julie watts on the consumer watch with a new effort to make food packaging better, reflect reality. >> reporter: when you see the world natural, healthy on a product, do you assume they're natural and healthy? >> not at all.

condo complex sending smoke into the night sky for several hours. this was one of many fires keeping firefighters busy. an inferno sparked an explosion that blew up a warehouse. it's been a busy time for firefighters. >> reporter: the captain called this a long hard day for firefighters. they've gone from an overnight house fire to a warehouse fire to this townhouse fire behind me. it started around 6:00 tonight and firefighters finished put putting it out in the last few minutes. >> reporter: in the span of one day, flames shot up from a townhouse complex. a giant warehouse, and a house on south 17th street. taxing the city firefighters. many hopped from battling one to the next. >> on top of that, you know, we're running medical calls, vehicle accidents, service calls throughout the city.

so crews are strung out. we're dealing with a lot with a lot of strain going on with all the units. >> reporter: crews fought flames that shot through the roofs of three town homes. everyone inside ran out in time. >> i heard screaming so i came out our front balcony to see what was going on and looked out to the right and saw the flames. >> reporter: across town firefighters are still putting out hot spots at a fire that raced across a massive warehouse, the length of a city block. it started early this morning, caused multiple explosions and a roof to collapse. owner dave helmet lost 90% of his family business. he's owned vintage rooftops for 10 years. >> it's devastating. i probably had around a million bucks in there and i found out i'm pretty much -- it's not insured. you can't really insure old roof

tiles. >> reporter: his business was hit the hardest. a strip of nearby homes was saved thanks to firefighters. >> for them to come from a third alarm fire and over to this fire and make -- and there are no injuries, no homes destroyed, it's quite amazing. it's, you know, the guys did an excellent job. >> reporter: and the fire captain says he doesn't believe any of these major fires are connected. this one was possibly started by an appliance and that five-alarm warehouse fire does not appear suspicious at this point. arson investigators will be on scene over the next couple of days to determine a cause. . it looks like we got a little rain in the forecast, hu? >> we do. less than 48 hours from now it will be raining outside. >> in january? breaking news.
