this is kpix5 news on kbcw. >> a teacher from a bay area elementary school arrested. the serious charges. >> change is coming to san francisco general hospital. the new plan to ensure the safety and security of its patients. >> a massive set of waves that challenged to the world's best surfers. the man who took home the trophy in the mavericks surf contest. i'm juliette goodrich in for elizabeth cook. >> a teacher took the term, pot luck a little too literally. she is now in serious trouble with the law. andrea with the dish that got a woman arrested. >> detectives say the trouble began on november 21 at a party involving several teachers from matthew turner elementary. it was a pot luck. after the party, several of the 20 people there began feeling ill, seriously ill. >> one of the party goers was

rushed to the hospital with severe reaction. she was hospitalized. the very next morning, another party goer was taken to the hospital because she continued to feel like she was under the influence of something she wasn't sure exactly what it was. >> hospital blood tests confirmed the presence of thc, the active ingredient in marijuana and it went just the holiday goers who ate the food. >> one of the attendeis took the food home and their 15-year- old juvenile ingested this food and became ill. >> that is when a police investigation began and the person who brought the allegedly laced dish was identified as 47-year-old, teresa badger, an elementary schoolteacher. witnesses told detectives after the party, badger admitted to them that she put pot in the dish. badger's neighbors say the charges, three felony counts of poisoning don't fit the woman

and mother they know. >> what i'm hearing is totally out of character. teresa is about as, she is kind. she is a dedicated teacher. she is someone who keeps to herself. >> badger was arrested friday afternoon at her home. when our cameras were there, tonight, an upstairs light was on, but nobody answered. the police department is not commenting on exactly what item badger may have brought to that party. saying they have people to interview in this information. andrea, kpix5. >> badger has been with the school district for 18 years. she is on administrative leave. >> san francisco general hospital has a new safety and security plan in place following the death of a patient. lynn spalding disappeared in september. her body was found more than two weeks later in a stairwell. the new plan includes more thorough searches and alarms in the stairwells. the changes were checked out by federal officials earlier this week. >> we have taken it very

seriously and made many significant changes to assure her family, our patients today, our patients in the future, and the whole city we are safer now. those changes primarily have been around security and safety. >> a review of the case found numerous mistakes in communications from the start. it found problems with surveillance cameras and security alarms. there has been a dramatic spike in the number of flu deaths this season. they have almost doubled to a total of 95. state health officers say it's not too late to get vaccinated. just today, santa clara county confirmed it had two more flu related deaths. the state says only nine people had died from the flu. >> police in palo alto released a sketch of a suspect wanted in a home invasion robbery. investigators looking for this man and two others in their 20s. the suspects forced themselves into the home of an elderly couple yesterday morning and robbed them.

the couple who were in their 80s were shaken up by the whole ordeal, but not injured. they told police they were forced to lie on the floor with a gun pointed at their heads. robbers took off with wallets, cash, and valuables. >> 14-year-old oakland boy wanted for killing his sister is still on the run tonight. that teen allegedly shot and killed his 17-year-old sister in an argument over laundry. the victim, justice, was the mother of a two-year-old. neighbors say they heard two or three shots from the family's chinatown apartment. surveillance cameras recorded the boy leaving the complex. the family is pleading for the boy to turn himself into police. state lawmakers are demanding answers other the con controversy. brushing aside concerns. a geologist said his supervisors covered up,

reportedly told the engineer not to document corns, but voice them instead. it's not a coverup, just a difference of opinions. >> after the falsifications were discovered, it became apparent to me that the problem was kept secret and more covered up. >> i have no evidence or no reason to believe that there was any coherrings or anything like that and bullying to make determinations. >> caltrans says the bay bridge is structurally safe. there will be another senate hearing next month. that one dealing with possible reform for caltrans. >> a nonprofit organization is working to change the future for some young girls by teaching them to code. kristen ayers shows us, girls as young as 7 years old are learning to build their own websites. >> like most 9-year-old girls, they love dolls. >> it shows the condition, the price. >> but unlike most kids their

age, butterfield created an app for doll lovers like herself. it's called doll finder. >> you can sell and buy doll products. >> butterfield is a member of black girls code. an oakland nonprofit that teaches young, african american girls to build websites and create apps and computer games. like the one rebecca taylor made. >> a game about if i were a rubber duck named larry that teaches you manners. >> the brain child of electrical engineer, kimberly brian. >> we like to think of ourselves as the girl scouts of technology. >> bryant did the research and black women receive 3% of bachelor's degrees in computer science. >> we hope to be able to tap into changing the ratio for women of color and making a difference in what the face of technology looks like. >> the nonprofit has taken off. there are branches all over the country and one in south africa. some of the girls apps are available on sites like google

the mavericks invitational. a lot of great competition out there on the waves. a south african wins for the second time here at the invitational. grant baker from durbin, south africa, takes the title again. he took it in 2006. second was shane, a hawaiian, and third was ryan of santa cruz. there were tens of thousands of spectators for the competition. a lot of people watching this also around the world online. it was a great day of competition. a lot of other top finishers from california were in the top six, including tyler fox, greg long of san clemente and anthony of santa cruz. kpix5. >> the winner was grant twiggy baker of south africa. baker had incredible rides like this one, and the waves are huge. up to 40 feet tall and this is what it is like to surf

justin bieber may have won the drag race. a yellow lamborghini racing with other cars 60 miles an hour in a 30 zone. look who is catching up at the tail end. a police car chasing a lamborghini. the drag race led police to book on resisting arrest and speeding without a license. sources say two breath tests put his blood alcohol below the legal limit. police say the 19-year-old singer admitted to drinking and taking prescription pills. and today, he published this photo to his account comparing himself to michael jackson. on one side, bieber is found waving to fans. the other shows jackson waving to fans after pleading not guilty to child molestation charges. well, it was a brutal day on wall street and for markets all over the world, investors are worried global economic growth is slowing a bit. plunged 318 points today.

that's worse one-day drop since last june. s & p 500 lost 38 points. >> one group say unique plan to slow the spread of hiv, it wants the city of san francisco to start handing out crack pipes. the health department was looking into it until joe vasquez started asking questions. >> hailey harris, 28 years old, says she is a crack cocaine addict. a group considered at high risk for spreading hiv. >> most of the conversation they have is, i don't care, you know, and i'm going to die anyway. >> could handing out clean crack pipes make a difference in that attitude? >> it may seem counterintuitive, but it's a great program. >> laura thomas is a group made of formal recommendation to san francisco's health department asking the city to consider a program to distribute free crack pipes to crack addicts. how will it work? it's not like the needle

exchange programs, which are accepted as a means to prevent the direct spread of hiv. crack pipes are different. you can't get hiv from sharing crack pipes. giving them out for free as is being done on a trial basis in seattle and canada is more of an outreach effort. >> once you can bring people into your program, make them feel respected, taken care of, they are more likely to want to come back and want to get on hiv meds. >> meds which have been proven to not only treat, but prevent the spread of the disease. >> insane. i think it's an insane idea. >> chairman of the san francisco republican party. i'm just concerned that the message we're sending, we give up. here's some free crack pipes. who knows, next year it's free crack. >> what do city officials say? an interesting thing happened after we posted this story to our website. a health department official told me the city was exploring

liver more 39 and san francisco 49 degrees when you start your weekend tomorrow morning. it's interesting that the ridge of high pressure, we want to go south, instead of going to the north. as it does, it's taking your influent of it and look what's coming up from the south. cloudy and raining in california. some of those clouds made it into the bay area. because that ridge is so far to the north, we'll be cloudy at times tomorrow as well as sunday. the ridge of high pressure comes back. it looks like right now, all computer models are saying once it passes over us, it is far enough to the south. that much needed rain fall will make it here as soon as next thursday night. the megaridge after four months may finally move out. mixture of sun and clouds over the weekend. not perfectly sunny, but we can
