studios, this is kpix5 news. >> passengers describing it as two minutes of terror. a flight out of the bay area runs into severe turbulence. good evening, i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. joe, can you tell us what happened? >> reporter: that flight left from here yesterday. cafe pacific headed to hong kong, but over japan, about 8 hours into the flig, the experience strong turbulence. 12 passengers and crew members were injured, according to the south china morning post. eight went to the hospital once they got on the ground in hong kong. a flight attendant had a neck injury. we found a couple photos that were tweeted out today. it's quite a mess. debris scattered about the cabin. people were bashing their heads. hug gage luggage and other

stuff were flying out of the aisle. it was more violent than a roller coaster and it was going on for two minutes. we reached out to the passengers who tweeted photos and other passengers, we hope to hear back from them soon. reporting live, kpix5. >> there was also a scare in the air over billings, montana, of all places. the united airlines plane from denver dropped without warning mid flight yesterday. severe turbulence sent passengers flying through the cabin. four people were injured, including one flight attendant who is recovering in icu. >> one woman, she flew up and her head knocked out on an upper panel on the ceiling and there was a woman behind us. it was calling for her baby. >> the baby was okay. the flight landed safely in billings. the airline and ntsb are investigating. here's a live look at

demonstrators throughout the night in a fiery standoff that left 20 dead. hundreds more are injured. danielle nottingham reports the white house is now calling on the ukrainian government to stop the violence. >> it was a long and bloody night in the ukrainian capital. fires burned through independence square where 20,000 protesters clashed with police over the future of the former soviet republic. the protest had been mostly peaceful since november when president victor rejected a plan to work with the european union in favor of a bailout from russia. ukrainian lawmakers refused to debate constitutional changes to limit the president's power. police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to try to regain control. the protesters threw anything they had. the white house is urging

ukraine's president to deescalate the confrontation. >> we urge him to restart a dialogue to develop forward for the ukraine. >> in a statement, secretary of state, john kerry, called on the protesters to refrain from violence of any kind. he said ukraine's deep divisions will not be healed by allowing more innocent blood to be spilled. an op opposition leader said we will defend it. kpix5. the oakland city council is set to vote on a proposed surveillance hub to monitor the city. opponents are speaking their minds at the meeting before the vote. the proposed domain awareness center would be 24/7 surveillance system designed to help monitor the city through video cameras. >> the reality is that i will never have enough police officers, because we are trying

to get to 900. i only have 600. we will never be able to fund that level. we need other tools to monitor some of the activity. >> i am in favor of things that solve crime and things that protect privacy and civil rights. i'm in favor of a prom compromise. >> opponents say if the center is approved, they are ready to launch. a lawsuit to stop construction. people living in filthy housing all under the supposed watchful eye of richmond's housing authority. we must warn you're welcome some you, some of this is disgusting. the residents new demands to fix their housing horrors. >> people came to the richmond city headquarters to talk to the council tonight. they are calling for the firing of the head of the richmond housing authority. this is a story that came to light and we got a look firsthand into some of these

units. they were crumbling and crawling with insects. >> roaches come out. >> friends welcomes us into his home in his housing project and pulled out the refrigerator. a few days after pest control sprayed, the floor is crawling with cockroaches. then there are was rodents. >> people got five or six of them. >> it is so bad, clay has to store food in a grocery cart to see the roaches and rodents from getting them. another tenant who did not want to show us her face, instead, showed us pictures of her body riddled with bedbug bites. >> how bad is it? >> really bad. i had to go to the doctor twice where i've had bedbug bites. >> one of the problems, the elevators. tenants who are disabled that have been stuck for hours.

we checked again today, still broken. >> tonight, people who live in hasienda packed a council meeting with more horror stories. they blame this man, tim jones runs the richmond housing authority and tonight he admitted he is failing. >> ten nants want jones' job, but tonight, he claimed the housing authority is now on the right track. >> now what happens next, kristen? is there a plan to fix the two housing units? >> you know, tim jones, the man who you saw apologizing, he is the one ahead of the housing authority. leapted to reallocate some grant money. i wanted to ask him, but he is refusing to answer any questions from the media. liz. >> all right, kristen, thank

you. what else could be wrong with the new bay bridge? that's what local officials are demanding from caltrans. the agency knew the bridge was leaking water for nearly two months before word got out. we got a good look at some of the leaky portions last week, it is unclear where the water is getting into the bridge. the metropolitan transportation commission concerned about caltrans sitting on information. once the basic instruction is done, state funding dries up, it false upon toll, paying drivers to cover any future maintenance costs. well, it's a long shot, but it could happen. a bay area tech investor wants to split california into sex separate states. cuts along existing county lines and make silicon valley its own state. tim must collect more than 800,000 signatures to qualify it for the ballot.

the u.s. congress would still have to sign off on it. a central california slaughter house that supplied beef to the national school lunch program. the meat company didn't meet cleanliness standards. this isn't the first time it had problems. this is the same facility where this video was taken in 2012. the footage showed workers tormenting cows. it showed downer caws being led to slaughter. the facility was shut down so the usda could investigate it. >> also, the feeding corporation slaughter house is now recalling nearly 9 million- pounds of beef. that slaughter house processed meat from six animals that didn't go through. now five canadian provinces.

tonight, a northern california lawmaker is demanding the federal government pose stricter standards on olive oil. that's because 70% of all the olive oil labeled extra virgin is not according to a uc davis study. a retailer in berkeley who is an expert and sells olive oil says beware of what you are buying in the store. most of what is sold is junk. may not come from the country on the label and may not even come from olives. >> it could be just a cheaper seed oil. it lost all its health benefits and getting lied to by the industry. >> well, the experts with the california olive council are saying -- >> a shooting outside the san leandro mall, this is the crime

scene from december 20 after last year. police say two men got into an argument and one of them opened fire. investigators say they identified the shooter as 25- year-old oakland man. detectives tracked him into san antonio where police arrested him and another woman. the fbi is looking for this guy, they are calling him the valentine's day bandit. the same guy is suspected of robbing a chase bank last month. as you can see in that heist, he showed a gun. call the fbi if you know who he is. >> don't feed the pores. don't smack them on the butt, either. students started posting pictures like these. >> a white picket fence, bars on the window, and sold for $600,000. more on why this house isn't a sign of the times.

popular park in berkeley and the problem is creating a potential toxic hazard. cesar chavez park on the perkily berkeley. ground squirrels and gophers like to dig. >> if they should penetrate that clay cap, when it rains, water from the former landfill could leak into the bay. >> berkeley tried to control the scrolls with no luck. much to the agreement of people, the city hired a contractor to trap, remove, and possibly kill the rodents. speaking of critters, students are getting a little too close for comfort with their neighbors. rob mccallister shows us the school wants them to back off from the bears. >> astounding pictures of a student hand feeding a bear.

>> it's not the best idea i have heard. >> the picture posted on a social media site was seen about everyone. cell phone cameras captured several encounters. the student left the window open and the black bear crawled in. >> i think they are putting their own safety at risk. >> never see a bear put down. we want to let them know that if you see the bear, you're going to get that bear killed. >> department of fish and wildlife kill the bears, but some students claim the message isn't sinking in. fernando: people are probably still feeding bears and taking pictures of them. i see shots and you know, behind people's property. >> and also making it difficult for bears to end up on campus, so they installed trash recycling bins. in the sierra, kpix5.

>> don't feed the bears. bad idea. >> how much of that is college kids being college kids and how much of it is mother nature and this lack of rain? >> i'm going to blame the college kids. mother nature brought the bears there. the college kids said, come on in. i have a sandwich for you. >> there are two wrongs. two wrongs do not equal a right when there's bear involved. here's a look that is going to go on ten days from now. look at the entire country. much dryer than normal in our 6 to 10 day outlook. one spot, one place will be wetter than normal. that one place, thank goodness, is right over northern california and the bay area. that's something to look forward to because the current conditions are very bleak. all of this rain fall will move off to the east. anywhere south of santa rosa. a few sprinkles in the far north bay. take you to antioch.
