of a driveway. the nissan flipped onto its top and both the driver and passenger (a man and women) pinned inside. the woman driving the s-u-v and a young child in her vehicle were not injured. sgt. scott hattig, scpd says, "there was no pursuit we did have witnesses who saw the vehicle come up over the hill they went as far to say that it caught air, was airborn coming over the hill it was traveling that fast, so i can't even begin to estimate how fast they were going right now." authorities say thcar was stolen back on october 29th. police are still investigating if the people driving had anything to do with the theft. tim: according to the sioux city police department, the number of cars stolen this year has already surpassed the number of reported vehicles stolen last year and it's only the beginning of november. in 20-14, there was a total of 203 stolen vehicles reported. as of today, there have been 207 reported tim: police are

advising people to take steps to prevent these thefts from continuing. jenna: though this is the time of year when temperatures go down and then so usually does crime... that doesn't seem to be happening this year. reporter rachel ramos tells us about the rise in car thefts in sioux city. rachel: jenna, tim, there has been a dramatic increase in the recorded amount of stolen vehicles over the past several weeks. i spoke with detective jeff harstad of the sioux city police deptment who filled us in on why there has been a sudden spike. these recent motor vehicle thefts have been primarily occuring within the morningside area. the local law enforement has opened a few doors to a couple theories on why people have been chosing to steal cars more recently. "we have people who have been stealing vehicles for financial gain and then we're also having people stealing vehicles for joyriding purposes," said detective jeff harstad of sioux city police department. the sioux city police department reminds citizens to remember to lock their doors,

hidden, earlier today, i spoke with a who has personally been theft. i'll give you his story at 6. live in the studio, rachel ramos, abc9. jenna: did you vote today. it's election day across the country. tim: and here in siouxland folks were getting out center at the rec center to vote for their local officials. according to woodbury county auditor pat gill, 18-hundred absentee ballots have been collected for the 2 races on the municipal ballot. voting officials we takled with said activity has been slow over all and gill says he expects only about 3-thousand of sioux cities 47- thousand registered voters to cast a ballot. a lack of races may have something to do with the low numbers. "i was like ohh, there is no one else running for mayor. interesting. so it's almost kind of pointless." "i figured bob scott is a very good mayor and everybody else must think so too."

"when thyere is more competition there is more excitement in a particular race but it shows that people do care about the election process" voting continues through 8 oclock tonight. we'll hear from the winners and take a look at a few important issues being decided around siouxland tonight at ten. jenna: the only contested race on sioux city's ballot in this year's municipal election is for a seat on sioux city's city council. that's the seat occupied by incumbant rhonda capron (kay-prun). she's running against challenger tom venesky who's run for council in the past. jenna: sioux center has the highway 75 expansion on their ballot today. expansion for the highway has been in talks since the late 90s. today residents have a say in the next steps for the project. if the majority votes in favor of the project, the city will start to

the department of transportation for future construction. if it is turned down, the city will look into alternatives, including a future vote. coming up tonight at six, we'll hear from both sides... voters and the city. tim: ohio residents heading are also heading to the polls today to vote on a measure major marijuana titled "issue three" which would allow residents to grow their own plants, but only permit commercial cultivation on just 10 farms all of them owned by the investors who backed this initiative. two of the investors behind responsible ohio -- an organization that put issue three on the ballot -- woody taft and dudley taft junior are also the great- great-grand- nephews of president william howard taft. pills? if you do new research suggests you may be in good company, here's abc news lana zak with more "are we a nation of pill-poppers? a new study suggests that, for some of us, the number of prescription medicines we take is on the rise. in a new report in the journal of the american medical association? researchers found that between 2000 and 2012? prescription drug use increased by nearly 20 percent. the team also finding that more

drugs at the same time? that's almost double than in the year 2000. most of this increase? in those older than 40 nearly all major prescription drugs are becoming more commonly used. drugs for blood pressure, high cholesterol, and depression - all up. the notable exceptions? prescriptions for pain meds, which remained the same? and for hormone therapy medicines in women, which became less common should we be concerned? fortunately, no. the authors of the report say that the use of these drugs, while rising, is consistent with guidelines from major medical organizations. it may be a sign that more people are seeing their doctors regularly? and taking the medications they prescribe. it's also possible that doctors are detecting and treating diseases that they used to miss, like depression for those taking prescription medicines, one important thing to remember? make sure your doctor knows about any other pills you are taking. because effective communication is the best prescription of all. with this medical minute i'm lana zak. a nebraska woman was bit by a tiger at omaha's henry doorly zoo over the weekend. jenna: police say she was trespassing. reporter brandon scott got the chance to speak to one of her friends. who says the woman is a lover of animals. " at omaha's henry doorly zoo monday afternoon, visitors tried to catch a glimpse of the tiger that took a bite out of jacqueline eide. officials, eide snuck in after zoo hours and tried to pet an 18 year-old malayan tiger named mai. the tiger bit eide, leaving her with serious injuries on her left hand. sources tell wowt 6 news her injuries are so severe she's at risk of losing part of her fingers. (friend) "she handled it really well. i mean, she didn't call an ambulance. she had a friend drive her to the hospital." we spoke by phone to one of jacqueline eide's close friends, who asked us not to share her name and to blur her out of this photo. her friend says eide loves animals and posts on eide's facebook page show her kissing a pit bull and wrapping a snake around her neck. but eide's friend had no idea she planned on sneaking into the zoo to pet a tiger. (friend) "the first thing i thought was, honestly, why, why did she do that? because even though she loves animals...it's not like, at least from what i know of her, it's not like her to do something like that. but then again, at the same time, it's like, 'oh, she pet a tiger. yep. that's jacqui.'" omaha police have cited eide for criminal trespassing. and according to the official incident report, when officers found eide at the hospital, they thought she was drunk. she was aggressive and non-cooperative. eide also has a three-page criminal record, including charges for drunk driving, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace.
