veterans. i spoke to different generations of service men and women today... all reflecting on the service of their siouxland brethren. nat sound... turning on fire truck sarah orwig is in her 5th years as a sioux city firefighter. and like many of her colleagues, she is also a member of our nation's military with 15 years of service at the air national guard. "it's neat to see all the veterans throughout the fire department, police department, through city public works, and all the other departments throughout the city... that we can come together, and those of us who have served our country are also still serving our community in some aspect or another" says sarah orwig, sioux city fire rescue firefighter and recording secretary. orwig served overseas after 9-11. service is second nature for captain, gordon wilson as well..... fighting sioux city fires for 32 years while also serving in vietnam and during desert storm for a total of 25 years.
6:01 pm
he says, todays committment to service by fellow fire fighters is impressive.... but actually less than when he first joined the force. "there was a lot more of us in the 80s and 90s it seemed that were in the military at that time. of course, a lot of them have transitioned and retired" says gordon wilson, captain, sioux city fire rescue. in the end it's all about service. "teaching the young guys, seeing gratification from knowing that you help people" says gordon wilson, captain, sioux city fire rescue. "it's protecting our country, and protecting our freedoms and all the things that we love every day. it's when kids come up and they tell you thanks or it's when you see the smiles on people's faces" says sarah orwig, sioux city fire rescue firefighter and recording secretary. on veterans day, captain wilson says it's important not only to remember those who serve but the sacrifices they make in doing so. "their life gets adjusted drastically at such a young age and people don't understand that, and i think that's probably the biggest thing that i wish people would get from veteran's day" says gordon wilson, captain, sioux city fire rescue. elisa on cam as orwig and captain wilson have made clear, service is important and not only limited to military members so be sure to thank your local fire and police

veterans day. reporting live in studio, elisa raffa, abc9 news jenna: there's a group out of kansas helping veterans all over the country by taking them on hunting and fishing trips. they recently did a hunt in northeast nebraska. the non-profit, called "patriot outdoors adventures" builds trust with veterans and current service members, by getting them outside and into nature. the hope is that they'll open up about tough stuff going on in their own lives. nathan mcclure with patriot outdoors says, "we are any era, any branch. we do not care if you have an obvious injury, a physical injury. we take anyone who has a need or a want, no matter how small or large it is." more about the group's mission and how one siouxland man is helping... coming up tonight at 10. jenna: an early morning shooting has left one dead in the town of pomeroy

jenna: according to iowa d-c-i, the calhoun county sheriff's office responded to a call around 2 this morning concerning a man with a gunshot wound. when sheriff's deputies arrived to the scene they discovered the body of a male victim. so far no arrests have been made in this case and authorities don't believe there is any danger to the public. the identity of the victim is being withheld for the time being. tim: the avian flu caused egg prices to sky rocket this summer, and now turkey prices are about 30 to 40 percent higher, just in time for thanksgiving. with turkeys in short supply, prices are going up and for the needy, that may mean cutting something else off the dinner list. with the number of turkeys donated each year variable, the food bank of siouxland is worried that higher prices may hit close to home for some. "families in need really feel the impact of those price increases first. then, of course, through our purchasing program when our prices go up, it's the same thing... we aren't able to buy as much of something or maybe we choose not to buy it at all" says linda scheid, executive director, food bank of siouxland. local butchers
6:04 pm
are feeling an effect as well steve hein, manager of braunger's steak company, says just like gasoline, a price hike won't deter customers from buying a turkey for thanksgiving. the bigger problem is... not enough turkeys to go around. "some of the product i'm trying to get... i'm having a real hard time with. like i said, price is a little higher but the biggest problem is not having the product" says steve hein, manager, braunger's steak company. although we tend to think of it more around the holiday season, the food bank says it's important holiday season, the food bank says it's important to keep the hungry in mind year round. jenna: fast-food and other minimum wage workers in hundreds of cities across the u-s are walking out of the job today tens of thousands of employees are demanding a federal minimum wage of 15 dollars an hour.. similar protests have been going on for a few years - now many workers hope to make it a major 20-16 campaign issue.. democratic bernie sanders weighed in at a worker's

rally in washington. " " " workers who work for the united states government deserve the right to raise their children in security. they deserve the right to earn enough to live in a decent apartment or a decent house. they deserve the right to bargain collectively." the nationwide strike comes exactly one-year ahead of the next presidential election. ahead of the next presidential election. tim: most of the g-o-p presidential candidates are hoping to make a mark in a constantly- shifting field at tonight's fourth republican debate in milwaukee, wisconsin, but fewer candidates -- only eight-- made the cut for the primetime stage. emily schmidt has more from washington on tonight's lineup. "it's good to see you gentlemen... this is what the top of the republican field looked like during the first gop debate back in august. things have changed.

scott walker dropped out, carly fiorina moved up, and chris christie and mike huckabee are headed to tuesday's undercard debate on fox business network. (donald trump, (r) presidential candidate) this is a strange election, isn't it? donald trump is still stage center, leading the group but with less breathing room. the latest c-n-n/o-r-c poll of iowans shows him with 25- percent support, ben carson two points behind, and marco rubio at3- percent -- high enough to get trump's attention in a series of tweets calling rubio, "a total lightweight...a highly overrated politician." fourth in the poll, jeb bush is looking to recharge his performance with this just-released ad. my record of government, i think, shows the path of what could happen in washington. most of the candidates are spending hours before the milwaukee, wisconsin, debate out of the public eye -- with the exception of rand paul, talking about charter

schools. (rand paul, (r) presidential candidate) if the school is your neighborhood is not good, the choice to go to another school ought to be your opportunity and your choice. and john kasich, shooting baskets with the milwaukee bucks. there you go! the bucks made the playoffs this year... (gov. john kasich, (r) presidential candidate) sort of like kasich, he's going to take this whole people not just to six games but he's going to win it in seven. a sports analogy getting its test when the basketball arena moves to the political one. in washington, i'm emily schmidt reporting. tim: and still to come a man is partaking in a medical trial that might make folks on dialysis have more freedom (fred) there is a big system coming tomorrow. wind and rain are a given, but could we also see snow and/or severe weather? your forecast is after the break. (dr. matthew rivara/university of washington medicine) "it's very much a prototype device. the study that we did was really a proof-of-concept study that such a device could be developed in the future into something that patients around e country and around the world could use." it would also allow patients to loosen up their diet. during his trial run, chuck indulged in forbidden foods.
