this is abc9 news this midday.... " " jessica rae: good morning and thanks for jning us this midday. i'm jessica rae. there's a big showdown coming up regarding a proposed pipeline project across the state of iowa. abc9 news reporter bria bell has more on a big hearing set for tomorrow that could decide the pipeline's fate. "people protesting bakken pipelines." for a year and a half, iowans have had no problem voicing their opinions on the dakota access oil pipeline project. come thursday those voices will officially be heard in a public hearing in front of the iowa utilities board. "people protesting bakken pipelines." announced back in june of 2014..... the project runs across 4 states including iowa, covering 343 miles. about a half a million barrels of crude oil would be transfered each day. the pipeline path includes 18 iowa counties. woodbury count may not be included... but that

doesn't mean people like electrician craig levine aren't paying attention. infact he's one of 134 who will speak in favor of the project on thursday. "i just think that it would be good for the state of iowa, it's a lot of good jobs and dakota access has done a very good job of keeping high safety records. it's a lot safer than the railcars that which are currently used and it is good for iowa," said levine. the utilities board has identified abother 143 people speaking against the project.... including rosemary partridge of wall lake. "i just do not believe imminent domain for private land when it's for a private companie's profit. that's pretty much it," said rosemary partridge. dakota access has already contractors and a third-party firm has delivered metal pipe, anticipating that the state passes the plan. energy transfer has projected $50 million in sales and 2 to 4 thousand jobs for iowans during construction. in sioux city, bria bell abc 9 news.

jessica rae: if needed, the hearing could run through december second. the iowa utilites board is expected to vote no later than early january. but if you are interested tomorrow a livestream video link of the hearing will be avaialble on our website ... that's siouxlandmatters dot com. jessica rae: sioux city fire rescue honored those firefighters and paramedics who have served in our military past or present. you may not know, but about 25 percent of sioux city fire rescue has served our nation, amounting to over 300 hours of service. sarah orwig and captain gordon wilson are two of those firefighters who both have decades of service with the air national guard. they say service is a rewarding experience. "teaching the young guys, seeing gratification from knowing that you help people" says gordon wilson, captain, sioux city fire rescue. "it's protecting our country, and protecting our freedoms and all the things that we love every day. it's when kids come up and they tell you thanks or it's when you see the smiles on people's faces" says sarah orwig, sioux city fire rescue firefighter and recording secretary. jessica rae: many local service men and women are also part of the sioux city police department and siouxland paramedics.
11:33 am
jessica rae: and the honoring of service members didn't stop there... on tuesday... around 300 veterans and military families headed to the american red cross. the organization "support siouxland soldiers" provided them with a free lunch and a week's worth of groceries. they also were able to get free haircuts, massages and ice cream different materials on p-t- s-d and other resources were made available to veterans. support siouxland soldiers will be back at the american red cross dec. 15th for their "holiday for heores" event. jessica rae: if you plan on cooking up a turkey for thanksgiving this year, you may want to buy one sooner rather than later turkey prices are about 30 to 40 percent higher, than in past years. and with the number of turkeys donated ch year varying the food bank of siouxland is worried those higher prices may hit close to home for some. "families in need really feel the impact of those price increases first. then, of course, through our purchasing program when our prices go up, it's the same thing... we aren't able to buy as much of something or maybe we choose not to buy it at all" says linda scheid,
11:34 am
executive director, food bank of siouxland. jessica rae: local butchers are feeling an effect as well steve hein, manager of braunger's steak company, says just like gasoline, a price hike won't deter customers from buying a turkey for thanksgiving. the bigger problem is... not enough turkeys to go around. jessica rae: norfolk public schools are gearing up to offer career academies... here's paul hughes with the details. " norfolk could be the site of another state high school championship event. representatives from norfolk and long-time host kearney will present their bids to host the state cross- country championships during the nebraska schools activities association board of directors' monthly meeting tomorrow in lincoln. kearney has hosted the state cross-country meet every year since 1972. a renegotiated lease between the norfolk airport authority and barnstormers restaurant is on hold for a few weeks, pending action by the state auditor. at monday night's meeting of the airport authority board, city attorney clint schukei said he had talked with the auditor's office that day, and was told a draft report on the previous lease was being circulated among staff before being forwarded to the auditor. he said he was advised to wait until that

nebraska and south dakota. it was founded on the premise of getting service members away from the rank and structure of the military so th can open up about challenges they're facing in civilian life. nathan mcclure says, "as we break down those barriers, we really get into the networking and mentoring. when we have the trust and friendship, people are more willing to accept that 'i'll go with you to counseling,' or 'i'll go with you to budget classes'; it allows us to get into the heart of what we do. mark wieseler, patriot outdoors ne state rep. says, "we find out what issues they're having, you know, problems, whatever it may be- stress at home, not being able to find a job, not being able to get a resume done, financial problems." jenna rehnstrom mark wieseler, a veteran from hartington, is hosting this hunt. through patriot outdoors, he's been able to turn his love for hunting into a way to help others. mark says, "the event is just the start. we try to go past just the event and make sure these guys are getting the help they need." joseph torriero, an army veteran living in georgia says, "people aren't getting the help they need. maybe they don't know how
11:44 am
to get it or maybe there's a problem with the army or the military or the va, i don't know, but what i do know is that vets help vets and that's the key. there's people out there that feel the same way. and if you need us, we're there." jenna rehnstrom here in the fields... just like on the frontlines. with photographer andy bottger, jenna rehsntrom, abc9 news. jessica rae: patriot outdoors took 450 veterans and service members out last year. and, these trips aren't just for the guys. they organize hunting trips for spouses, as well. sometimes even kids can come along. and, they're at no cost or very little cost to the veterans themselves. jessica rae: after the break... we'll have a very special dish for all the veterans in your life right from the mr. food test kitchen.

day, a day dedicated to honoring our country's military. and for those of you who are enlisted .or who have served, i want to say thank you. because without you, the world would be a very different place. so rather than making dinner for just your family tonight, i thought it would be a good idea if i shared a recipe that would be nice for you to take over to a veteran's house as a way to say "thank you" for all they've done. all we do is mix together some cooked elbow macaroni with some chunked up cooked chicken, a good amount of shredded cheddar cheese, a can of cream of chicken soup, a bit of mayo, some milk and a little salt and pepper. once that's mixed, into a casserole dish it goes and we top it off with a mixture that we made by combining some crushed crackers

be a good idea to make it in a disposable pan so you can drop it off and without worrying about getting your pan back. image how good you'll feel after sharing this with a friend or a neighbor who's a vet. and thinking "this is the least i can do for them". i do hope you'll go online to check out the recipe for our, "chicken mac 'n' cheese," so you'll actually make it and share it with someone who has given our country so much. i'm howard in the mr. food test kitchen . i want to salute all of you who have served . or are currently serving in the military. i thank you with a big all- american . "ooh it's so good!!" " jessica rae: if you would like a copy of that recipe you can send us a self addressed stamped envelope here to a-b-c 9 news. our address is 625 douglas street. the zip...51101. be sure to write "chicken mac 'n' cheese" on your request. or you can visit our website...siouxlan d matters dot com. and click on the mr. food logo.... jessica rae: coming up after the break... we'll have a special guest in studio to tell us more about an upcoming fundraiser at western iowa tech.
