roads safer during snow conditions. in norfolk, if you experience icey or snowy roads with temperatures around or below 25 degrees, it won't be long until you see trucks spraying the streets with beet juice. according to norfolk, beet juice has been proven to work better than brine alone,.. by mixing the two, which helps in trying to keep the roads ice free. so effective, that the city bumped up its beet juice tank from 5,000 to 10,000 gallons in order to meet the city's demand. "on the 5,000 gallon tank, when it got near empty, i would have to wait for it to get down to 1,000 gallons or less before i could order a refill and with this it allows more flexiblity to have more of a reserve on hand," said miller. the beet juice mixture is not only better for drivers, but the enviroment, as less salt is applied to norfolk's streets which means less road damage in the long run. "we find out that we use less salt so we don't have to go back and retreat and do some of the roads and intersections because of the effectiveness of this," said miller. though the new alternative to salt seems to be an all around better removal substance, some people are worried about possible staining as beet juice is also known for it's intense color. "you can wash it off your vehicles...any car wash with soap and water. it's not caustic or anything. again the sodium in the salt...the chlorides are probably more damaging than the beet juice," said miller. bria: norfolk has
