"things are getting better but there's still disproportionate numbers of native children in the child welfare system, disproportionate number of our children being adopted. four direions, who sponsors this, is about making ourselves well and pulling our families back together." says frank lamere, director of four directions center. jenna: the event started at the war eagle monument and made several stops along the way. that used those stops to say

abc9's bria bell got the chance to take a ride with iowa state troopers and has more on safe and smart holiday travel, bria? bria: tim and jenna, thanksgiving is just a day away and with recently lowered gas prices, a lot of people have already hit the road. northwest iowa has received winter weather advisories for tomorrow so according to iowa state trooper john farley, it's in the best interest of drivers to take extra procaution when trying to get to their destination. thanksgiving is known as the day for turkey as well as traffic. iowa state trooper john farley says that there is usually a spike in accidents during the holiday season and so far there have been over 275 fatalities in the state of iowa for this year..a number that he says the state doesn't want to increase. "we never want to see that fatality count go up and it takes everybody. obviously it takes law enforcement through education and enforcemenen actions, but it takes drivers too to make sure that they're really concentrating on

" kids? and dogs. sure, it's cute. but today, new research? pointing to what could be a hidden benefit for children. researchers, writing in the c-d-c journal preventing chronic disease, sought to explore the health effects for young children of having a dog. they looked at more than six hundred children between four and 10... asking their parents to answer a series of questions about their kids' physical and mental health. their findings? just might perk up your ears. among the kids with pet dogs, only 12 percent tested positive on a questionnaire for anxiety. among the kids without dogs? 21 percent registered as anxious. surprisingly, having a pup didn't seem to make a difference in kids' physical activity or weight? and a bigger study will be needed to see if the benefits touted in the study actually hold true. but ask any kid with a dog? and they will likely tell you that a fuzzy new member of the fafaly is a welcomomaddition.
