giving ...and with it comes the ringing bells and red kettles. i'm talking about ross town today. and they are also all volunteers. a number of the groups wearing red aprons and ringing the bells today were local high school students. members of the student council from heelan and north high school took shifts today in front of several locations in sioux city. the red kettle campaign is the most important fundraiser for the salvation army and its effect is felt throughout the community. " we use all of the donations for programs that we do right here in siouxland. our after school program is funded through

transitional housing programs are used through the fund here. so it's a big fundraiser and it helps a lot of people here in siouxland." we'll hear much more from the bell ringers and why they think spending time volunteering during the holidays is so important. all of that coming up at 10. reporting live in studio ... lukas voss ... abc9 news. as we approach the new year....local officials are helping parents keep their little ones safe on the roads. a "c-p-r and car seat check" took place today at fire station three in sioux city. dozens turned out to have their car seats inspected...free of charge. officials made sure car seats were properly installed...the appropriate size....and not expired. sioux city fire and rescue...along with mercy medical center and siouxland paramedics...orga nized the event. us out and they're very knowledgable and we defantly love doing these type of events with them, it's defantly a great partnership." c-p-r classes were also offered at the event. if you couldn't make it out to the c-p-r and car seat check. you can have it come to you. to set an appointment....con tact the mercy child advocacy center...their number is at the bottom of your screen. deborah we know the names of the three people who were killed in a car crash yesterday afternoon. 68-year-old karol aeschlimann (ash- li-mann)...71 year- old lila rayburn...and 68 year-old sandra johnson of south dakota...were all traveling in the same vehicle. they were pronounced dead at the scene. authorities say..the group was traveling in a toyota avalon on highway 81 near yankton...when they were hit by a chrsyler that crossed over into on-coming traffic. three others were injured in the collision. the crash remains under investigation. deborah now turning to the presidential

in the wake of the isis-inspired shootings in san bernardino earlier this week....terrorism is now a top issue in the presidential campaign... meanwhile the latest poll...shows donald trump is back on top. abc's devin dwyer has more. even jeb. as for president obama...he has yet to weigh in on the f-b-i's word that what took place in san bernardinio was a terrorist act on u-s soil. deborah now to one of the more bizarre developments in the san bernadino shootings the landlord of the home...where the farook family was living...is giving reporters an inside look on how they lived. while there were signs of a normal family life...it was also where the couple was amassing an arsenal and building bombs. abc's matt gutman was one of the reporters who got inside. (sot - tomi olsen / neighbor) it was like they were anonymous to all of us. it's really weird. deborah: today hundreds turned out for a local holiday tradition of giving back. over 500 hundred people filled the goodwill of the great plains for the annual "goodwill shoe and mitten party." each year, the event provides cold weather gear to more than one-thousand kids ...ages 5 to 12. local families took home goody bags...as well as brand new shoes, hats, socks and mittens.

we get volunteers coming year after year, some of the volunteers here today, they received shoes when they were children at the age of five and now they're in their sixties so it's pretty amazing." volunteers for the event included high school students, local athletes included high school students, local athletes and law enforcement. today marked the 73rd year of the event. "nats singing " deborah what you just heard were the beautiful sounds of the season....as performed by the mona shores high school singing christmas tree in michigan. this annual, must-see event includes 240 singers....making it the largest of its kind in the country. each year the choir's director selects a "tree angel" to sit at the top of the singing tree. the tree angel is a person who exemplifies the spirit of the choir. this year's choir had two tree angels. deborah

morningside hosted southern oregon in the n-a- i-a semifinals. the winner would punch their ticket to daytona beach. alex walker joins us now with more. alex yes deborah...the mustangs back in the semis for the fourth straight year, but each of the past two seasons, morningside has been unable to get over the hump. lets see if the stangs could break the drought by beating the defending champs southern oregon. late second quarter.....6-0 southern oregon....but tyler kavan takes it in for the touchdown....mor ningside takes the 7-6 lead into halftime....... third quarter now....ryan middle to jason vander kooi..... are you kidding me....the one- handed grab....unreal concentration... this.....kasdorf to michael whitehead in the corner of the endzone...he toes....stangs take this game went wire....morningsid trying to force overtime...but the field goal is blocked....30-27 the final...... alex back on cam: we will have extended highlights and reaction coming up in sports but for now deborah

a 7-6 lead into halftime... third quarter now....ryan kasdorf over the middle to jason vander kooi..... are you kidding me....the one- handed grab for 38 yards....unreal concentration... and that sets up this.....kasdorf to michael whitehead in the corner of the endzone...he taps his toes....stangs take the 14-6 lead... later in the quarter...now 16- 14 raiders...kavan his the edge and somehow finds the pylon for the five yard score.....21-16 morningside..... but here come the defending champs....tanner trosin was dynamite all day and man is he quick......he dances out of a few tackles and after a circus-act run...he finds the endzone and caps it off with a flip......raiders on top 23-21.. fourth quarter now.....fourth and goal raiders with the stangs up 27- 23....trosin strikes with 1:15 to play and southern oregon has the 30-27 lead....... morningside would drive to set up jared amundson with a 41-yard field goal to force overtime.....but the raiders block the kick....and thats your ballgame....30-
