more funding to do it. elisa raffa has more on that topic today. elisa body cameras have been a topic of discussion before, in fact.. this is the second time theheioux city police chief has brought the issue to s ste representatives' attentntn on legislative day. this morning they discussed things like policy and cost that would need to be sorted out before the department can put them to use. legislative day... it's an annual meeting where sioux city council leaders meet with state representatives to discuss accomplishments and issues that need to be addressed in sioux city. tuesday.. some of the topics discussed at the meeting ranged from economic development to the trail system.. but a hot one? body cameras. "i like the transparency, i like the documentation because it provides a first hand, dedeiled explanation of exactly what took place. i think it benefits the officers, i think it benefits the community" says pete groetken, city council. as a veteran of four decades of service in public safety, groetken understands that the job of a police officer varies, and that could cause problems when it

and releasing video filmed on a body camera. "our contact, as you well know, is very personal. it might not be criminal, it might not be evidentiary, but it's a very personal communication that goes on there" says chief dave young, sioux city police department. "i'm ok with it provided the individuals who are on the tape have an opportunity to release or authorize the release of that information" says pete groetken, city council. another issue...storage. although the police chief is working to plement a standard for officers to turn eir cameras on and off, they will virtually be running 24-7. therefore, not only will the department have to pay the intial price for the cameras, but need a chunk of change to store video as well. "sometimes data needs to be kept for a long period of time to make sure that it goes through the court system. is it evidence? it might be something that needs to be kept forever, and you'll be paying for that for a long period of time" says chief dave young, sioux city police department. the woodbury county sheriff currently has body cameras in use. his office has paid 45 thousand dollars for the 80 cameras his officers use daily. additionally, they pay about 25 thousand dollars a year in maintence and storage of video. chief young says, the sioux city police department would pay more with a larger squad of officers and more data. "i think in the longng run that they would more than pay for themselves. you'llsee what's going on on the camera and

us with lawsuits that people think they might have against us. that could save us a lot of money right there" says rhonda capron, mayor pro- tem. elisa the police chief says he's working with city legal to pin point some of those policy issues, as well as scouting for the best technology for our officers to use. he says body cameras should be implemented at the latest.. by the summer. reporting live in studio... elisa raffa.. .abc9 news jenna: less than a week after a former sioux city school employee was sentenced for sexual misconduct with a student, the mother of that student is filing suit against the sioux city school district and employee erick deleon. the lawsuit claims that the school district failed to provide enough supervision to prevent her daughter from being exploited by deleon. the parent also claim that there were no policies in place to protect the girl from the emotional damage her daughter sustained. no details about how much in

is seeking. tim: a home invasion early monday morning inioux city... hahapolice and folks who live in the neighborhood asking for help from the public. two suspects remain at large. jenna: police say the suspects made off with top dollar electronics after forcing their way in and assaulting a teen in his home on south alice street. abc 9's bria bell was able to speak to a neighbor about the incident, she's in studio with more. bria: tim and jenna, sioux city police department is seeking help from the public to catch the ones responsible for a robbery that occured early monday morning. a detective on the case says that this is an isolated incident in a low crime area. on december 7th around 2:40 am, 2 masked males kicked in the front door and entered a home on the 2600 block of south alice street. the suspects held the owner and mother of two, at gun point and tied up her special needs 18 to 19 year old son and beat him with a crow bar.
