would best fight terrorism, dominated the g- o-p debate last night in las vegas. during the so called christmas dinner debate the republican hopefuls tried to make it count. the topic of the debate was keeping our country safe and how the canidiates plan to do so. sparks flew between, jeb bush and donald trump as well as between marco rubio and ted cruz. " as far as ted's record, i'm always puzzled by his attack on this issue. ted, you support legalizing people who are in this country illegally. ted cruz supported a 500% increase in the number of h1b visas, the guest workers that are allowed into this country, and ted supports doubling the number of green cards. it is not accurate what he said that i supported legalization, indeed, i led the fight against his legalization and nesty bill. " tim: abc will air a gop debate feb 6th from manchester new hampshire. tim: after last night's debate... senator marco rubio headed back to the hawkeye state

why he's backing clinton. the presidential candidate outlined why she says it's time to even the nation's economic playing field. (hillary clinton/(d) presidential candidate): "there has been too much that has led to the wealthy getting wealthier at the expense of hard- working families, middle-class families, young people and that's not the way we're going to keep america growing and going. you see, i disagree fundamentally with lead republican candidate, i think america is great and it's up to us to make sure we make it greater." tim: buffett also took a shot at republican front-runner donald trump. after saying that many of the presidential candidates are smart, the investor added, "one of them tells you every five minutes how smart he is." tim: the iowa department of education's school report cards came out today. it's an online web source you can use to find out just how well your local school is doing in several departments including their

driver buying about 11 gallons of gas a week spent about 550- dollars less at the pump this year than last. and that gives american consumers about 130-billion dollars more to spend. j-p morgan chase says most drivers are using that gas savings to eat out more. the news comes as gas prices continue to fall. gas is currently two dollars, one cent a gallon -- the lowest price in seven years. tim: coming up later in the show we'll take a look at some of the ways we can fight heartburn (fred) cold weather will continue, and breezy winds will make it feel even colder! but the weekend will be warmer. your forecast is after

was a narrow band of 1-5" of snow that stretched from pierce county nebraska to sioux falls. here's something interesting: sioux city saw 0.17" of rain early this morning before we swtiched over to snow. the fast freezing of this rain resulted in some slick spots. the port neal welding company skycam hd shows cloudy skies from the ho chunk centre in downtown sioux city. the almanac shows a high of 41 and a low of 28. in sioux city, the temperature is 30 with a dew point of 22. local temperatures are in the 20s and 30s. that's about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than this time yesterday. winds are northwest at 15 to 25 miles per hour. resulting wind chills are in the single digits and teens for most, with a few lower 20s. looking west, there's more cool air headed our way. the satellite and radar shows the big low pressure system moving east. cloudy skies linger. a few counties remain in a winter weather advisory. the stormcast hd shows quiet weather, reinforced by high pressure friday night that will result in some cool temperatures. your forecast for tonight is for a low of 18 and mostly cloudy skies with breezy winds. tomorrow, the high will be 30 with breezy winds and partly cloudy skies. the 7-day forecast shows that friday will be our coolest day at 28, the down to 12 friday night. above-freezing highs will move in saturday and remain for several days, and there are no additional chances for snow over the next week. so, our chance of a white chirstmas is looking slim at this point. jenna/tim/fred (tim)

tim: still to come... if you're one of the millions who deal with heartburn, there is relief out there. we'll take a look at the different types of medicines available. tim:
6:13 pm
that leaves us with an unpleasant burning sensation in your chest... we all know as heartburn. there are several options to help ease the pain. holly firfer has the details in today's health minute. " " heartburn occurs when stomach acid moves up to the esophagus. lifestyle changes like not smoking, losing weight, and reducing the amount of spicy and fatty foods can help lower your risk of heartburn. if that doesn't help, there are three types of over-the- counter medications you can take. (naadede badger- plange/pharmacist) antacids, the histamine antagonist receptor, and the proton pump inhibitors." (naadede badger- plange/pharmacist)
6:14 pm
have less than one incident a week. so if you have heartburn very rarely especially people who have heartburn associated with certain foods they take antacids." for longer-lasting relief, pharmacists recommends h-2 receptor antagonist medications, also called h-2 blockers --- although.... they might take two hours to ease the pain or discomfort. if you're still having heartburn episodes after more than 2 weeks...proton pump inhibitors or p-p-is. might help. (naadede badger- plange/pharmacist)"t hese medications act by preventing the acid secretions in the stomach [butt to] you want to make sure that you take it every single day unlike the antacid and the h2 receptor antagonist if the pain is severe or won't go away, seek immediate help... it could be a symptom of something worse. for today's health minute, i'm holly firfer. tim: you might have taken part in biometric screenings or health checks at work. they're offered through some insurance plans, but do they really do any good? one sioux city woman says hers was likely life- saving. connie noreen helps homeless families get back

offseason, iowa state senior naz mitrou long was able to rehab and return for the cyclones this winter. but persistent soreness led him to decide to sit out the remainder of the season. mitrou long had played in 8 of iowa state's nine games this season, averaging 12 points for the clones. he sat out sunday's game, and then along with coach steve prohm, came to the decision to hang up the high tops for the year and try to get back to 100 percent. steve prohm--"this is just a decision that, you know, we felt is the best interest of him going forward. he's got all my support and prayers." naz mitrou-long--"i mean it sucks man, it really does suck. like i said, man, i'm at a low point and it will get better when we get some wins in. i know as we start to win and i see things happening, like matt taking over in my spot and hallice and deonte and so forth, things will start to feel better. but i believe in this team man, and there's no doubt about it. we

leaders, and i feel like we have some of the best players in the country. so i wouldn't do it if i didn't believe that." steve prohm--"the beat's gotta go on. and i'm gonna be there for naz on every step on the way. but from a team standpoint, i've got to be better, georges, jameel, all down the line, we've all gotta raise our level." the cyclones return to the court saturday when they take on uni at the big four classic--that game when they take on uni at the big four classic--that game will be on espnu. chris: in leading the hawkeyes to a 12-1 season and their first rose bowl since 1991, kirk ferentz has racked up some impressive postseason awards this month. but today's trophy might be the most prestigious yet. ferentz was named the 2015 eddie robinson coach of the year by the football writers association of america for the first time. the iowa head coach was a

award in 2002 and 2004. ferentz has also been named the american football coaches association region coach of the year and big ten coach of the year this postseason. chris: just two games stand between the sioux city musketeers and the holiday break, but if you head out to the tyson on friday night, you might see some new faces in action. between international competitions and injuries, the muskies have needed new skaters to step in and step up. in fact, seven of the players that dressed for sioux city last saturday night weren't with the team when the season started. and how about this, ushl teams are allowed to dress 21 players, but the muskies only dressed 20 because they didn't have enough healthy bodies. but jay varady says it's not a bad thing for his team. jay varady--"zuhlsdorf, wilkins, trinkberger are all playing internationally. scheid, pulkkinen, gestro all have concussions and jake ryczek has a sprained ankle so that puts us with a few injuries. i say the word excitement because we've got a lot of young faces, a lot of new faces in here that have an opportunity to play
6:19 pm
jackson keane--"being a little short in the lineup, these points are very crucial in the standings. i think going on the road we're gonna have to play well and keep doing what we're doing last weekend." and again, there are two more chances for sioux city to get some points points before the christmas break. friday night, the musketeers host tri-city at the tyson...then saturday they head on the road to fargo. the storm and force sandwich the muskies in the standings right now.
