>> cosby urged her to take pills that he provided to her. and to drink wine. the effect of which rendered her unable to move, respond to his advances. >> reporter: when constand first made the accusations, prosecutors decided there wasn't enough evidence to pursue case and constand settled with cosby in civil court. prosecutors say incriminating statements he made in a recently released deposition in that case led them to reopen the criminal investigation, cosby saying the pills he gave constand were benadryl insisting what followed was con sensual. cosby's been accused of drugging and assaulting dozens of women over decades, but this is the first time he's been criminally charged. and cosby is scheduled to be back here in court and january 14th. kendis and lauren? >> of course, there's going to be a lot of coverage of that.

sexual assault that took place on an evening in early 2004 at mr. cosby's home in cheltenham township, montgomery county. >> reporter: cosby met constand through her job with the temple university basketball team. court documents say he gave her three blue pills he claimed were "herbal", saying they would "make her feel good and take the edge off", calling them "three friends to help her relax" and asked her to "taste the wine." within minutes, "she began experiencing blurred vision and difficulty speaking." cosby then telling her to lie down, according to the criminal complaint, and assaulted her while shshremained "frozen" and "paralyzed." criminal charges were not filed at the time. constand later filed a civil suit against cosby. but that ended in a confidential settlement. depositions from that case were unsealed this past july. there, cosby insists the pills were "benadryl," describing the encounter with constand as "consensual." still, it was those deposisions that led prosecutors to now file criminal charges.

now prosecutors could turn to those accusers to strengthen their iminal case. since their cases were never prosecuted, pennsylvania law witnesses in a sexual assault case. in a deposition for constand's case released over the summer, when cosby was asked if he used quaaludes to illicit consensual sex in the past, he said yes. and since then, the number of women accusing cosby of sexual assault, drugging or rape has risen to more than 50. the 78-year-old has long denied the allegations. >> i have been in this business 52 years, and i have never seen anything like this. >> reporter: erl this month, the man once recorded as america's favorite dad fought back filing a counter suit against seven of his accusers who had filed defamation suits against him. >> we are taking steps in order to right a wrong. >> reporter: the statute of limitations for pressing criminal charges has expired for

the subject of an intense international manhunt since they disappeared earlier this month. caitlyn jenner settled a lawsuit in connection with a fatal a terrific accident in malibu last february. jessica steindorf was driving one of the four cars involved in the accident. terms of the settlement to be paid by jenner's insurance settlement were not disclosed. she still faces two other lawsuits as a result of the accidents. >> he's gone from america's favorite dad to criminal suspect. bill cosby facing felony charges for sexual abuse. he's been accused before but those were civil suits settled out of court. this time he's facing crimimal jail time. the latest from abc's ryan smith. >> reporter: a frail bill cosby walking into a criminal court. the once venerated comedian appearing before a pennsylvania judge to face a charge of aggravated indecent assault of this woman -- andrea constand. >> these charges stem from a

on an evening in early 2004 at mr. cosby's home e cheltenham township, montgomery county. >> reporter: cosby met constand through her job with the temple university basketball team. court documents say he gave her three blue pills he claimed were "herbal", saying they would "make her feel good and take the edge off", calling them "three friends to help her relax" and asked her to "taste the wine." within minutes, "she began experiencing blurred vision and difficulty speaking." cosby then telling her to lie down, accordininto the criminal complaint, and assaulted her while she remained "frfren" and "paralyzed." criminal charges were not filed at the time. constand later filed a civil suit against cosby. but that ended in a confidential settlement. depositions from that case were unsealed this past july. there, cosby insists the pills were "benadryl," describing the "consensual." still, it was those depositions that led prosecutors to now file criminal charges. >> reopening this case was our
