american groups are spreading a message of the positive affects of a sober celebration. bria bell tells us more about the sobriety pow wow going on at west high. deborah she's live from there to tell us more. bria: deborah, the sobriety pow wow is a way forpeople to celebrate the new year with their friends and family without alcohol. both natives and non natives are here and it's pretty packed right now... there's food, dancing, and an important message behind it all... "one of the statistics that recently came out wawathat there was er 40 percent of public intoxication, belonged to native americans s d so here tonight we're going to try and reverse those roles and hopefully that's a start to someting," said garan coon. typically new year's eve means popping a bottle of champaign, but native americans are celebrating in a different way...without the use of alcohol or any substance for the matter. substance abuse is an issue for natives and today's pow wow is a unique way to solve the problem. native american leaders say this is a prevention tool and

"the reason for a pow wow is to celebrate. we had a lot of good things happen in 2015 and we want to bring in 2016 on a goonote and so it's always good to come together and bring our youth together and bring our elders together and shararin songs and dadae," said coons. "traditionally in america it's a night to go out and get high and get drunk or look for a party...and this is actually a par@y, but we're doing it in a good way," said holum. the event also serves as an eduction tool as doors are opened to anyone from any background... giving the community an opportunity to learn more about tribal traditions and heritage. signs of slowing down. reporting live in sioux city, bria bell abc 9 news. deborah thanks bria. deborah new year's eve is sure to be a date you'll nevev forget... especially if it's also your anniversary. more couples are ditching the tradition of a summer wedding for something more unique. sioux city couple mary horton and shawn olorundami (ola-run-dahmi) made getting married their last big hurrah of 2015. they tied the knot tonight at trinity lutheran church. family and friends were there to witness the big event....and then celebrate not only the happy couple... but also the new year. our congratulations to the happy couple! deborah ananon this night, most kids won't t stay up until midnight... so a family museum in the quad cities celebrated the new year at noon, instead. bettendorf's annual noon the event offers children a chance to celebrate the without staying bedtime. kids made crafts, played games and counted down to 12 o'clock. setting up something that people are going to have fun tonight. and that's the best part of our job is when we see people have a good time and new year's is one of those best times of the year." says entertainment manager brad streeter. deborah a gene simmons impersonator is also at the hard rock tonight...to greet guest and take a few selfies with them. deborah a local non-profit is getting a huge boost to start the new year. today, woodhouse chrysler in sioux city donated more than $78,000 to the food bank of siouxland. that monon was raised over the past couple of months through a company-wide initiative "woodhouse" makes for local food banks. the money will support the backpack program, which sends ekend food sacks home with children...who rely on the free and reduced lunch program. this is the thir year woodhouse has done the local food bank challenge. last year they raised $40,000. james rainey, woodhouse sales rep, says, "when you have that type of owner that has the type of drive and determination to do this, i mean, it just sprinkles down to to all of us, so it's awesome." it costs $132 to

drummer in a university of iowawa band. she wore that medal proudly for every hawkeye game. this thanksgiving, it went missing....but the good luck it provided her was never lost. " " "anyone who knows me knows about my rose bowl medal" take one look around dorothy carpenters home "we're certainly a family of haeye fans" there's no doubt. shes a hawkeye. and has been since 1956 when she joined the famous scottish highlanders, an all female bagpipe and drumming band. "oh im right here, third snare" as fate has it, her first year at iowa, the hawks made it to pasedena. "was of course that magical football season for t t hawkeyes to get to go to the rose bowl for the very first time" the bandndlayed on their train n de out, in the parade, at halftime and on the rides back. and ter it all, they got this medal. carpenter has worn it nearly every day since. "i consider it a good luck charm too. i wear it to all teh games" that was until the monday before this thanksgiving. nearly 60 years later. she went to the grocery store with it on... "the chain was there, the link was on the chain, teh medal itself is gone. i could not imagine, what on earth, how i couldve lost it" so she put an ad in the paper and crossed her fingers.
