chose not to go into lockdown. abc9's deborah souverain was at that news conference, she brings us more, deborah. tim and jenna superintendent dr. paul gausman says this all unfolded about 15 minutes before school srted yesterday morning. he says a tip was called into school officials... that a student was arriving with a weapon. sioux city police tell us they're charging a 12- year-old 6th grade boy with carrying a concealed weapon. police say the boy was able to get the 25-caliber pistol out of a lock-box at home. the gun was not loaded and no ammunition was found on the boy. according to policecethe student showed the gun to a friend.... who told his parents... who then notified the school. north middle did not go into lockdown, because dr. gausman says they didn't believe the students were in danger. " we had what we believed to be the threat immediately detained and neutralized and felt that the best step was to begin the school day. you can't do a lockdown and allow someone

dr. paul gausman, superintendent of sioux city community schools school officia notified parents of the incident...through an automated phone call.. around 6 p-m monday evening. some parents were upset they weren't made aware of the situation earlier. however, we spoke with one parent who said she agreed with the school's decision to continue the school day. "people do things anywhere you go, malls, theaters, people can do things so it's no different than at a school," said allision sexton. "i think the staff acted as quickly and safely as they could to prevent something from happening because things are going to happen in society today." the student t o brought the unloaded weapon to school is now suspended.... until the school district completes an investigation on the issue.. which could last up to 45 days. according to the district's policy, the student could face explusion from the school for one year. dr. gauzman says, it's not clear why the student brought the gun to school.

dr. gausman on the matter. reporting live in studio deborah souverain abc 9 news. tim: the iowa legislature reconviened on monday. today governor branstand took center stage sharing his hopes for 2016 in his annual condition of the state address. amanda krenz brings us the details on how this may shape the legislative agenda. amanda 48:21 the iowa legislature will face a lot of challenges this session, specifically the governor talked aobut the budget. but there are also some big issues that seem to have bipartisan support. ((nats of gov walking in...)) the longest serving govenor in u.s. history, once again entered house chambers to deliver his 22nd condition of the state. 11:20 it's a tight budget, will keep iowa stable. it's s balanced today and fits our 5 year projections. governor branstad got right to business talking about the budget saying most of the state's money should go`to education and medicaid. the newly sworn in speaker of the house, and first ever woman to hold the office in iowa agreed that it will be another tight budget year because state revenue isn't as high as many thought it would be. but she said there was a silver lining to the governor's

upmeyer 46:05 there werwe some things that appear to me to have a lot of bipartisan support so that's a great thing to see. one e ample of that bipartisan support came after the governor talked about the state's need to address equality within the criminal justice system. governor 29:27 in many cases, tax dollars may be better spent on rehabilitation than incarceration. ako 40:42 african americans are 33% of the population in the state. 27% in the penitentiary. we have to address that. one item that could be more divisive is the governor's plan to help fund improvements in the state's water quality by diverting some money that is currently used for school infastructure needs. governor 15:26 this is a monumental investment in education and water qulaity and it does it without raising taxes. pam jochum 39:11 if we're going down that pathway we're doing to be changing some laws i'm not sure we want to renig on a promise we made to voters when they cast that originin vote.

democrat hillary clinton pulled in 44 percent support. former marland governor martin o'malley continues to receive single didget s sport in iowa. jenna: on the gop side of the race, jeb bush was back campaigning in iowa today. bush was in coralville early this morning for a meet and greet with voters when asked about the gop leader, donald trump, bush didn't hold back. you know, this is, he's not a serious person. he's a master at consuming the news and having people ask, you know, about him for sure and he's great at disparaging people of all types, but we're electing a president t the united states . jennnn bush also made stops in grinnell and ankeny. tomorrow he will be in urbandale to wrap up his two day stint in iowa. tim: the state medical examiner has confirmed the identity of a person who's remains were discovered last week in a burned out home in breda iowa.. that's in carroll county. according to the sac county sheriffs office, 48-year-old

identified through dental records. the home completly burned to the ground. the cause of death is listed as smoke inhalation and burn injuries. foul play is not suspected but the cause of the fire still is not known. jenna: one day after fire closed sneaky's chicken in sioux city, renovations are underway. tim: owner dave ferris says he wants to have the gordon drive restraunt back open as soon as possible.... our bria bell has more on what's ahead for the popular eattery. bria: tim and jenna, dave ferri the owner of sneaky's chchken wants his stomers to know that they're nonogoing anywhere. he says they've been at the gordon location since 79 and since the good lord didn't burn the building down, they're just going to restart up. the business will through its and plans to be providing chicken by this weekend its mobile vehicles. dave guesses the total cost of the rennovations will well exceed over a hundred but he says nothing will

"might sound a little cliche...the four of us t tt were in here when the fire started got out safe, the rest is details. we have a great staff, we're working with some good people. i've got 10 people that work for almost 15 years or more...no, i don't think there's anyting that we can't conquer," said ferris. the entire back end of the buidling was completly burned and investigators have determined that the fire was started by improper disposal of a cigartette. in the meantime dave and his team will be working hard to reopen the doors of sneaky's chicken. we've been experiencing... can be downright dangerous.s. especially if f u dodot have a warm place to go. frostbite caca occur in just 30 minutes outside in temperatures or wind chills at 15 below 0. babies, the elderly, and anyone with other health concerns are at greater risk. for that reason, local homeless shelters take this time of year especially seriously. "with the wind chill factor and things like that, we just kind of keep it open so that individuals can come in, because we don't really want people to be outside in the cold" says dayle webbs, director, men's ministries at gospel missions. jenna: the gospel mission of sioux city also helps provide hatsts gloves, and scarves to those who come in. mercy medical opens up their cafeteria as a refuge from the cold when temperatures dip below ten degrees. tim: after a slow start, the flu season is striking big time in iowa. according to the iowa department of public health, there have been four flu-related deaths since november of 2015. iowa has three strains going around..

n-1 that was really serious in 2009. school-aged kids are more prone to that strain. healthfficials are warning anyone who hasnt got their flu shot- to do so because it should make a difference. patricia quinlisk medical director, iowa health department " it could be a pretty bad year because two of the strains could cause pretty serious illness. the good news is the vaccine seems to be a good match for the strains, unlike last year where it wasnt as good for one of the strains" tim: the flu season generally peaks in januararor february. jenna: a local non profit was spreading some good will and warmth during these cold times "thank you!!!... your welcome." member of quota international of sioux city gave out hats and mittens to students at hunt elementary today. it was possible thanks to a grant given to the club by midamerican energy. all of the items donated and distributed were bought locally and representatives of quota say they're thankful to be helping

company skycam hd shows that we had alternating periods of partly to mostly cloudy skies today. the high today was 13 and the low -1. highs over western iowa were in the single digits for the most part. eastern nebraska and southeastern south dakota saw highs in the teens and 20s. 10

the iowa hawkeyes, it's tough to go on a bye. but after 9 days off, they finally return to action thursday night at the number four team in the country, michigan state. the hawkeyes of course knocked off the spartans a couple of weeks ago at carver hawkeye arena when msu was ranked first in the nation. but winning atathe breslin center has been achallenge for iowa. michigan state is 43-17 all time against the hawkeyes in east

straight year the best players in the ushl will compete in the ushl/nhl top prospects game. the event features 40 of the best draft eligible players in the league, five of them from the musketeers. the three forwards from sioux city, cj dodero, jackson keane, and matt steeves are actually on a line together tonigig for team west. defenseman michael boyle is on the first defensive pairing and jake ryczek is in the second group. those five skaters will hope to add to the 46 players from this game over the last 3 years that have been drafted here's a look at the stats the five musketeers have put up so far this season. boyle is a b prospect according to nhl central scouting, that's a 2nd or 3rd round prospect. the other four have c grades, meaning a fourth to sixth round prospect. chris: for the fourth time in the last seven years, alabama is on top of the college football world. the crimson tide erupted for 24 points in the fourth quarter, and beat previously
