is marco rubio the new face of the republican party? we'll break down the action, and it all starts right now. >>so as i stand here tonight, breathing a big sigh of relief, thanyou iowa! >>i think the people of iowawa have sent a ve pround messssage to t political establishment, to the economic establishment d the way to the media establishment. good morning, and we're glad you're with us. this morning we will recap the 2016 caucuses, taking time to examine both the republican and demoratic races. but before we bak down the ras, let's break down the
9:01 am
iowa holds the first in the e nation status, one we hold very dear to us yet know other states have challenged whether we should hold that privilege. on monday night more than 350,000 registered voters turned out for democrats and republicans. that breaks down to 186,000 republicans and 171,000 democrats who participated. that equals nearly 16% among those eligible to vote. the republicans numbers were much higher than there 2012 turnout, but the democratic paicipation was lower than the turnout in 2008 when barack obama got his first big victory. of thtwo parties we begin with the closest of the two. here are the final numbers released by the iowa democratic party. in a razor thin victory, hillary clinton juju edged out bernie sanders. many experts are calling the end results a victory for sanders, who for manmonths has been considered the underdog in the race. more on what's ahead for the two battling it out for democratic
9:02 am
but first, part of the iowa caucus is to narrow down the field. in the democratic party, that meant the departure of former marynd governor martin o'malley. >>when i got into this eight months ago i had no doubt that it would be anything but a touou fifight, and it is a tough fight but i've always been drawn to a tough fight, and i felt when i got into this as i looked dodown the road, i felt very firmly at our country was scanning the horizon looking for new possibilities and new leaderership and a way to heal our divisions and move us forward. and you guys have been with us every step of the way and i caot thank you enough. >>to help break down the impact of monday's caucus, i am joineded by kylervin, an torney and adjunct professor in political science for briar clf univivivsity. thanks for coming in this morning. >> no problem.
9:03 am
>> absolutely, the big question is could bernie saers turn out his people? it ended up he did. that's what made the race so extremely close. and it's the closest democratic caucus inowa's history on that. >> i is really a flip-flop of what you expect. because of hilary clclinton' history in iowa, she had a head start. >> she was way ahead, and sanders took some steps back, initial enthusiasm it seems like, maybe she's exertin her force, but then he's made a come back recently, a lot momentum on his se. and roll that into the caucus night. >> how mh do we read into the discussion, since the caucus on monday,on democratic side - on the democratic side. sanders folks talk about the confusion at the caucus sites, but it doesn't look like i it'll change the delegates, how
9:04 am
>> sure, it's expected when people are competing that hard and putting that much te in it. u want to know who the winner is. the reason you see a focus on it, if hilary clinton doesn't win iowow or a narrow win, she can say i won iowa, she goes in and behind the polls in new hampshire, or goes in new hampshire and loses new hampshire, and lost both iowa and new hampshire, that changes the narrative of the wholeace. that's why you see peopleoming back and talking about it. if sanders is able to create a shred of doubt on the iowa result and able to win new hampshire, then it's a clouded first couple of event for her. headinin into the south carolina. >> what would you predict timothy, obviously bernie sanders is expected to carryew hampshire, when the voters there
9:05 am
they've both legitimately saye both won from there, it's more interesting.g. >> absolutely, when i think this race gets extremely interesting is in south carolina. when you looked added iowa and -- at iowa, and new hampshire, these a two reall good states for sanders. they're great to start out in. the demographics change after at. south carolina, nevada, both have more diverse populations. and it'll be very interesting to see how sanders message pys to more diverse populations, and populations african americans, and south carolina and more hispanic populations in nevada. those traditionallyave a close [inaudible] with theheilary clinton. >> you expecect that to continue again. t's talk about the democratic party in iowa. there continues tbe the
9:06 am
some precincncts it was within a percentage popoint, it makes s someense to sort things out. but the way they do the caucus, will open the door to e types of criticisms, your thoughts. >> certainly, and their process, it's a a open vote, you have to declare what you're for, that's a different type of process. and anytime you have seen a lot ofrticles, and register nationally of coin flips, and coin flips deciding delegates, and anytime you're throwing a coin flip as important as a presidential caucus, that's the time to look at it, and say, do we want these decided over points. >> take a look at the way things broke downwn on monday night. the map of the state of iowa. the two different candidates in the red a the brown w hilary clinton in the red states. and bernie sanders in the brown.
9:07 am
sanders really up and down the west c coast, and the east coast of the state you could say, as well as the pockets that involved university students. >> absoluty, bernie sanders, the question could he get out the youth vote, turned out they did turn up for him and voted. i think 80% of collegege age voters, voted for bernie sanders. overall, i don't think he got as many as barack obama in 2008, but the percentagee of the college vote we got, that bernie sanders got was higher tn barack obama had done. he won the college vote by a higher percentage than barac obama. >> and the graphic for our own county, you can see the two candidates and the others broke down inside the county, at the top, that's bere sanders with 53 plus percent, and hilary clinton with 46.3% there. and martin o'malley down the list there.
9:08 am
scenario in many spotin the state. >> i think that's right. sanders really came on late, got his people out, turnout is one of t biggest questions, maybe not as big a turnout for the trump supporters as people thought cominin in, b b bernie sanders was able to get people and catch the momentum. >> wilill we see martin o'malley again? >> i think this is the end. >> all right, we'll see what happens. still ahead, we look at the repuican, and steve king stops by, intudio to discuss the accusations of dirty politics used by himim and the cruz
9:09 am
us. >>the statatof iowa has spoken. iowa has sent notice, that the republican nominee and the next president of the united states will n be chosen by the media (chcheering) but will be chosen by the most incredible, powerful force e where alsovereignty resides in our nation by we, the people - the american peop >>we finished 2nd and i want to ll you something. i'i' just honored. i'm really honod. i want to congratulate ted and i want to congratulate all of the credibleandidates. welcome back cruz and trump were the focus of the republican
9:10 am
and while they earnrned the attention, sdid another candidate in the field. take a look athe final numbers. while cruz may have stole the show with his ththe percentage win, marco rubio also made a statement by giving trumump a run for his money for second place. the florida senator finished just 2,999 votes behind trump. heris rubio on monday night. >>tonight, here in iowa, the people of this great state have sent a very clear message. after seven years of barack obam we are not waiting any longer to take our country back. >>here is a look at the fourth, fifth and sixth vote getters on monday. certainly ben carson's campaign had to be disappointed that he wasn closer to the pack. at onpoint the retired neurosurgeon was polling as the e leader in iowa. rand paul finished fifth and jeb bush sixth. paul was also one of three gop candidates to bow w out of t race instead of moving on to new hampshire.
9:11 am
announced on mony night. both paul and rick santorum dropped out tuesday. santorum also threw his support behind rubio. it should be noted that huckabee and santorum were the iowa cuaucus winners in 2008 and 2012. ted cruz the winner, should he have won by more? >>n iowa, it's been about beating expectations, and if you win, it's great obviously, but if you don't win and beat expectations it's great. cruz got both. not only did he winin but he beat expectations to allow the polls that trump was ahead in the polls. cruz not only beat expectations by winning, but also won that carries the momentum into new hahampshire. he had a great ground game, going with organizations and getting people out for his side.
9:12 am
organi, organize, organize, and catctch fire at the last minute, if that's not what marco rubio did, i don't know what is. the momentum was rolling. >> absolutely, and i think a lot of establishment republicans have beeeen waiting for rubio to come to the forefront. with t strong finish in iowa, it was aost like an acceptance speech like firstce. his third place finish was a strong finish, and he certainly wanted too seeee that as t anointing of the establishment, and now he's trying to take thatt to new hampshire and build the momeum. >> dald trump was gracious in the caucus, and we heard, and thenhe next few days or so, he sent out tweets of how cruz
9:13 am
dirty politics, is that true or just trump being donald trump? >> he's wanting to take t t ototlight on to himself. and create question marks of other candidates, i think it was a typical trump move to cast a question mark over the whole race, and then again,ry to build his own momentum going into new hampshire. >> we mentioned ben carson, there's been a lotf discussion since with his plans movg forward. i honestly thought he had to have been pleased with his performance in iowa. he was out in front early, b but had almost 10%, and at times his campaign was nonexistentn iowa. >> you don't hear the finish he had in iowa, but certainly att 10%, you see in new hampshire, there's a lot of candidates at 10% that we're talking about. chris kristi, and jeb bush and carson has the 10% in the
9:14 am
>> i want to talk ain the local hero. bob -- steve king mentioned, of ted cruz,, b bob i thought, n that he was deep in the weeds, bubut we have not heard a lot of him in recent months. he wasas prominent in the cruz campaign, and he's risen back on the landscape here inowa. >> absolutely, he's known for bringing a lot of organizationon to anyny kind of election, if you go back to the recall the iowa supreme court justice, to getting the ground game, people out to vote and knowing how to do that. he proved again, he has a lot off coections in that area, and certainly a very important endorsement r ted cruz. >> we're still a ways awayy from a gubernatorial race, but they'll garner that same asashey move forward. >> absolutely, and the
9:15 am
wants to run on the republican siside. >> reepublicans have record number on caucus night, is thatat directed to their ground game have had or partly there were so many different candidates? >> certainly trump brought a lot of aention to the campaign. like him or don't like him, he brought a lot of spotlight to the entire event. whether people are going to support him or try to prevent him from winning, whatever it may be, there's a lot of attention because trumpp was in the race. one of the things i think is overlook, you can talk about bernie sanders and his ability to get out the college vote. if you look at johnson county, which is the university of iowa, and iowa city, story county, that's iowa state university, marco rubio won both of the counties. and the question is, does rubio have a bit of a youth vote on the republican side?
9:16 am
really capitalize on that going forward? >> take a look at the maps again, the repububcan side, this is the state of iowa withed cruz in the brown, and donald trump in the blue, and the four states that are green are marco rubiand ben carson. fourth in the race as we mentioned as well. take a look at woodbury county,, but sioux county. this was interesting, as red as sioux county is, and the endorsement of steve king and bob, so many others, teecruz only w w sioux county by y percent almost. your thoughts? >> it's certainly interesting to see -- i went to school in northwestern college, i'm familiar withh sioux county. you wonder were some questions of ethanol involved in those votes. what swayed the voters?
9:17 am
given that you just mentioned of the momentum for cruz. maybe the ethanolol question, maybe the l le swin to rubio. it's an interesting vote. >>eally appreciate you taking time to be with us. we look forward to getting together and keeping posted on political news, we appreciate your comments. >> absutely, my pleure. >> we'll be back after the break, and i'll sit downith
9:18 am
cruz. my final guest today is a familiar one. representative steve king has represented iowa's fourth congressional district since 2003. congressman king also serves as the national co-chair to senator cruz's campaign. thanks for being with us. >> thank you, it was a terrific week, and we'll look pack years and years from now, and see the campaign put to. 11 candidates into the race, a very cplimentary of the work.
9:19 am
thatowa punches one, two, and hampshire. that's t the way it worked out. >> in the past sment we were discussing the accusations that the cruz campaign used "dirty politics" on caucus day. you yourself sent out a tweet saying "cars looks like he is out. your thoughts today? >> i met with dr. cararn on wednesday overing and we talked -- e ening and we t tked this thing through, and i brougught with me a chronological time line, and i say this information was sourced back the carson campaign. they're the first ones to deliver that information. i talked direcectly that individual, whom i won't name. we understand that, and we understand each other. it was information that cn picked up, and t they sent out
9:20 am
as that all happened, it barjs i'll say confiing, when it went through the cycle of multiple, multiple tweets, and finally, jake and dana, came out with the reports, sure like the path was a the story was that becarson wld skip new hampshire, and south carolina, and, and then he did that, and ca back to dc, and i believe he's scheduled to arrive in new hampshire friday for the debate on saturday. no where e dicnn say dr. carson was suspending his campaign.. that was the inference cruz made. sen. cruz has been criticized >> i would say, that we're working aolitical world. it's reall time information. a reasonable person, would look at that, and recognize that if
9:21 am
out informati that says heelan skip new hampshire -- he will skip new hampshire, and south carolina, and go to florida for r and r -- >> one of the issues that came him. i was there, when he ask that and his first real response, and clarification of that. how much i'll use the word heat, how concerned are you to mend fences with folks on the farm that's upset that you did side withomebody -- h h stance on [inaudible].]. >> i think that t the position that ted cruz has taken, iave said that i'm standing with the rfs. i'll defend it. it expires in 2022, if we can hold it together, a against thehe petroleum interest that long. they'll work har i will fight on that.
9:22 am
toge is by far the best policy for the long term interest, spoeshl in core ethanol. the industry has said to me, we want to tear down the wall, and eliminate the tax treatment for petroleum, and make sure we have market access. i hope that people understand this. i will fight and defend the rfs, and meanwhile all the rest of this is what the industry has asked for. >> historic night for iowa, and during the victory celebration that followed, you were as e exciteded as anyone. you were clearly otional on monday night. >> negative tv ads running against ted cruz and me, from
9:23 am
ethanol question out there, that was following us around,d, and no truthful information on it. there's a lot at stake. i'm looking forward to a full spectrum christian conservative, and going on to win thesy. our -- presidency, and our values, end up in the ova office, that's a l to be happy for. >> well, it was a historic night as i menentioned. and a lot of folks will look back on, and the process continues, and again,, iowa is just the starting point. we appreciate your time here, always look forward to having you join us at the table. >> thank you very much, i appreciate it too. time to get to the nine things to know. and number nine, bt of the
