today-- but this was not his first act of violence. the 18-year-old has actuallyeen connected to several incidents-- dating back--to last year. 18-year-old isaiah mothershed appeared in court thursday for the first time-- since being accused of shooting a sioux city police officer sunday. mothershed is charged with two counts of attempted murder and five counts of 1st degree robbery-- each as a class-b felony that carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. "i have to advise you that if convicted of any of those charges, you would be required to serve 70 percent of that sentence, before you'd be eligable for parole or work release. " mothershed's hearing is actually in several incidents-- dating back to december of 20-15. according to court mothershed was invasion back in a special needs and beaten while the other occupants of the home were threatened at gunpoint. also connected to four other robberies-- over the past two months. also-- the shooting of the

sunday's investigation-- was not mothershed's first run-in with sioux city police. mothershed was arrested for kidnapping and burning two men over a drug debt--back in july of last year. the judge orded mothershed be held on a 300- thousand dollar bond. the driver sustained only minor injuries. tim: last novembver, the safety of one hilly area in sioux city came into question after two people died in a car accident on 25th street... the area is also known as "thrill hill". now sioux city officials are looking at a plan that could mean blocking off the street. jenna: a meeting is underway to determine the future of the hill moving forward. abc 9's bria bell is at the meeting right now, what can you tell us? bria: tim and jenna, i'm at trimble methodist church where residents who live on 25th street will be able to voice their safety concerns. many of the residents who are at tonight's meeting, signed a petition to close the top of the hill...so far that petition has received about 40 signatures. this hill has caused controversy for residents on 25th street as some want to see it go and others want it to remain. the city's public works staff will be in attendance at the meeting going over what would happen if the city decides to close the end

is hoping update confusing terminology and a complex color system. tim: our meteorologist elisa raffa spoke to meteorologists at the weather service and has more... elisa: do you understand the difference betwn a weather watch and warning? if an advisory is issued... is that a downgrade? these are questions causing some head scratching and its prompting the national weather service to research some changes. they're teaming up with social scientists to better understand how people take in and use weather risk information. how should meteorologists protray information to prompt you to take action and move to your basement in the event of a tornado? for some, the near 70 year old system just isn't doing that. hightened alert on travels due to the zika virus, some iowa researchers are working to make an effective vaccine while educating people about the threat. claire powell from our des moines affiliate has more. " at this time last year, researchers say the zika virus was basically dorment. " it feels like a mild flu, most people thats what happens and they dont know theyre infected" within 10 months, that's all changed. "what was amazing was there were no cases and now its over 1.5 million in brazil. its incredible, thast just from last year" the virus, discovered in the 1940's, has spread to a pandemic. recently, newlinnk genetics, a cancer research company in ames, known for their ebola vaccine and infectious diseases division has tossed their hat into the ring. their researchers are attempting to find a vaccine to battle the mosquito-borne illness.
