adding the two new positions will mean city council will have to reevaluate the city's budget, but the department says they're in need and could use the extra man power if the request is approved. "as officers we support the chief in going to the city council and asking for more officers so that we can have additonal help. there are a lot of times when it seems that we don't have all the help that we would like to have to be able to serve the community as efficiently as we would like to," says sheehan. bria: officer sheehan also stated that regardless of city council's decision, the police department will still protect and serve to it's best abilities. bria: city council will have another budget meeting on febuary 18th and will vote on the additional positions in early march. coming up at 10, hear from two council members and what they think of the chief young's request. reporting live in studio, bria bell abc 9 news.

police in omaha spent much of the afternoon in a standoff with a man who barricaded himself inside a west omaha home. it's unclear just how many people are in the home, however one person emerged from the residence unharmed. initially a person in the house called police, saying he'd been shot, and his girlfriend was being held hostage. officers are attempting to negotiate with the suspect. jenna: an iowa senate committee is taking on concussions head on, putting forward a bill on preventing these kinds of injuries and it has a lot of coaches and trainers talking. the bill focuses on preventing concussions and will be hitting the senate sub- committee floor monday. the proposed bill would make it mandatory for home teams to provide athletic trainers at every varsity level game for collision sports. those include wrestling, football and both boys and girls soccer. the biggest hurdle the bill faces is that it's not funded... which means more costs for already struggling schools.

cake. a des moines woman named maddi epping poked fun at hillary clinton's recent email to her. the emailed asked maddi to donated just a dollar... asking quote: "i'm not kidding maddi, i'm asking you to give one dollar right this second. could you chip in? the internet exploded in memes and viral images using the hashtag "im not kidding maddi". jenna: today was the last work for day many, until valentine's day. and some folks decided to take advantage and send their valentine's gesture a little bit early. "singing" members of the siouxland discovery chorus surprised some lucky folks with a valentine's song. they've been singing for loved ones for almost 20 years now, and members of the chorus say the valentine's day surpris is much more thabn a fundraiser for the chorus. jim malek. jenna: they'll be out all weekend giving gifts of songs, chocolate , a rose and candy. you can call the number on your screen if you want to set up a special surprise for your loved one this weekend. proceeds also go back to other community organizations as well. jenna: floral shops like a step in thyme here in sioux city have also seen an uptick in business, ahead of valentine's day weekend. on average, drivers are making anywhere from 20 to 30 stops a day to deliver flowers. owner kathy bogenrief says everyone works their hardest leading up to the holiday. " it gets pretty hectic, we have to have more drivers of course but we also even have to have more people making the flowers up for us. so i got more designers on staff right now too." says owner kathy bogenrief. kathy says that the shop will be open sunday from 9am to around 4pm. but they won't get to relax afterwards, they will prepare for easter and mother's day.

after the breabasketball in the state of iowa. last night the hawkeyes lost on the road to an unranked indiana squad, one day after the cyclones did the same in lubbock against texas tech. iowa state had a six point lead with two and a half minutes to go in regulation but didn't score again before falling in overtime without jameel mckay. now the cyclones have had a couple of days to regroup and focus on the next challenge, a visit from texas on saturday. the longhorns beat isu in overtime last month, but they haven't won in ames since 2010.
